A Samoan is admired for his brave role in the attempted rescue of a 22-year-old international student from India who recently drowned while swimming at Cultus Lake in Canada.

Fa'amanu Tomasi Lapa is originally from Lano, Savaii but he moved to Abbotsford Canada.  

Fa’amanu Tomasi Lapa dove into the water and recovered the body of Manpreet Singh even if it was not enough in the end to try and save his life.

Aisake Nasedra is a young man of Fijian descent born and raised in the South-Western suburbs of Sydney, and acknowledges that it is land that was stolen from the Dharug people.  He holds a Bachelor of Science a major in Environmental forensics from the University of Technology in Sydney and recently wrote an article - ‘A warriors journey’ detailing what drives his activism.

Dr Debbie Ryan is the Principal of Pacific Perspectives and during the initial stages of the Coronavirus outbreak, Dr Ryan was commissioned to set up a Pacific Response Team on behalf of the Ministry of Health to inform and advise our Pasifika communities.

Barbara Edmonds is a mother of eight, a specialist tax lawyer, and community fanatic. Titahi Bay, Porirua has been home to Barbara, husband Chris (Nga Puhi) and their eight children, for the last 12 years.

Barbara has a wealth of experience and a unique set of skills. At one level, day-to-day, she is a senior advisor to a Government Minister and was a key contributor to the Government’s law reforms following the March 15 Terror Attacks. She’s proud of her work in helping to make Aotearoa, New Zealand a safer place.

Most recently, Barbara has been heavily involved in the Government’s tax, social policy, small business and economic responses to COVID-19.

Barbara is also the Labour candidate for Mana.

Ani O'Neill was born in Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand in 1971. She attained a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sculpture) from the  Elam School of Fine Arts, 1994. 

Ani O'Neill's artwork is often site-specific and installation based, utilising a range of media including sculpture, craft and performance.

Working as an artist she pays tribute to her Aotearoa, Pacific & Cook Islands heritage, drawing on elements of community, Cook Islands culture, and her family to inform her art practice. Ani has exhibited in a number of group and solo exhibitions and residencies both in Aotearoa and internationally, and has also worked with the Pacific Sisters fashion and performance collective for over 20 years.  

Ani has spent the last 12 years of building a life in Rarotonga - working mostly in education, film and hospitality - but has recently been working on 2 exciting new art projects, thanks to special 'COVID-19 Grant Funding' from Creative New Zealand.
