Jews have been praying for the governments of the countries they lived in since the time of the Babylonian exile. Yet the founding of a Jewish and democratic state presents a radically different relationship between the State and its citizens, making the traditional Prayer for the Government that was appropriate in the Diaspora incompatible with this new reality. In this podcast, Rabbi Morris explores the original and official Prayer for the State of Israel composed in 1948, as well as a variety of adaptations and alternatives produced by both Israeli and Diaspora Jewish communities.
