In this episode, we look at Ruth 1:1. The book of Ruth follows on the heels of the book of Judges; arguably the darkest period in Israel's history where, "Everyone did what was right in their own eyes." The book of Ruth is seen as a bright side in that tragic period. And it was! However, it doesn't start out that way. What does Elimelech and his family, "doing what was right in their own eyes," have to teach us and how do they illustrate, "The Castrated Christian?"

In Judges 6:1 - 2,  the Israelites hide out in caves and dens instead of crying out to God, repenting of their sin, and moving on. It takes them seven years before they realize this is what they needed to do. Sometimes, even as Christians who know that Jesus has granted us forgiveness of our sins, we can hide out in our own caves of guilt and shame. What does this Judges passage teach us about the sin and danger of doing that?

One of the most difficult truths for us to read in Scripture is that God sometimes, intentionally hardens hearts. Our human minds scream that this isn't fair of God to do! From creation, God has appointed men to be strong, good, Godly leaders of their wives, their families, and the church. The first sin committed was a result of Adam not asserting that role and instead, being passive. We saw it with Abraham and Jacob as well. And Aaron was no better in the narrative of the golden calf in Exodus 32.
