Probably the most fought against doctrine is the doctrine of election. But this doctrine is not just about whether we have the freedom to choose Jesus or not. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture clearly shows us that before the Holy Spirit regenerates our hearts and brings us to a saving faith in Jesus, we have no freedom at all! We are in complete bondage to Satan!

Without God, we are completely helpless and can do nothing of any eternal value. We need God to open our minds to understanding His Word, and open our hearts to receive the saving work of Jesus and so the Holy Spirit can indwell in us. But while God does all of the heavy lifting, that doesn't mean that we don't have a part to play in our sanctification. We have a big part!

After Jesus' resurrection, He appears to some of His disciples on the beach of the Sea of Galilee. Peter is so excited to see Jesus, he runs in hauling a huge net of fish all by himself. After Jesus' Transfiguration, He comes down from the mountain to find His disciples arguing with teachers of the Law and others. When Jesus inquires about the cause of the argument, a man tells Jesus that the disciples were unable to exorcise a demon from his son. When the disciples ask Jesus why they couldn't cleanse the boy from the demon, Jesus' very puzzling answer is, "This kind of demon can only come out by prayer." While Jesus is teaching, His mother and brothers show up and tell someone to go get Jesus and tell Him to come out to them. Many of us are familiar with Matthew 4:1 - 11 - a tired and hungry Jesus who has just spent 40 days in the wilderness – which was more like a dessert than a forest – and He hasn’t eaten anything. And during those 40 days, He is tempted by Satan. But there’s a few questions that this passage raises. Since Jesus is fully God and since He has complete dominion over Satan, why did He allow Satan to tempt Him? Why didn’t He command Satan to stop? And maybe the bigger question, can God be tempted?
