7: Man Up: Defining Friends, Social Capabilities, Selfishness, Millennial's and our Weakness

Listen Later

Adam’s Topics:
  1. Email on friends and friendship
    1. Her argument: to avoid feelings of false guilt, we need to clearly distinguish friends from acquaintances.
    2. My argument: I agree, but there are more than 2 categories (friends and acquaintances), so I have “tiers” of friends (Facebook friends, email friends, long distance friends, local friends, and then soul-mate like friends)
  2. Millennial weakness
    1. "Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol' days, when our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out." Those are the lyrics of a song called Stressed Out (by the great Twenty One Pilots) that has quickly become what The Atlantic calls an Anthem of Millennial Anxiety. http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2016/03/one-thing-considered-stressed-out-an-anthem-of-millennial-anxiety/470034/

    3. Anxiety: managing it from information overload. Lifehacker says "Don't Voluntarily Take on Other People's Anxiety if You Can Avoid It," but Paul said "bear one another's burdens" (Gal 6:2). I think both are right, but Lifehacker goes too far. We love and help others, but we realize our limitation and trust in God's sovereignty FOR them. After all, Jesus said "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?" (Matt 6:25).
    4. Part of the fall, but comes from fear. We are always confused, Calvin

  Thane’s Topics:
  1. Selfishness
    1.  - is okay when you're alone/by yourself (goes along with recovery)
       - is not okay whenever you are with others (generalization but is the better side to habitually err on)
       - how to recognize your selfishness (from personal experience this week): are you consistently showing up late? Do your conversations mainly revolve around you or the person you are talking to? Do you more often adjust to others schedules or have them adjust to your own?
  2. Article from Adam’s friend
