The early church’s attitude toward death changed almost overnight after the resurrection. People who once denied Christ were suddenly willing to be crucified upside down. Believers walked into the Colosseum singing hymns and cared for plague victims. Death was no longer something to avoid.Jamie and Donna Winship started with a lecture on Athanasius and the Incarnation, then found themselves asking a harder question: If death has lost its sting, why do so many Christians today do everything possible to avoid it? When COVID hit, the instinct was often to separate and survive rather than move toward people. When someone dies, it is almost always framed as a tragedy and a loss—as if God failed to show up.They bring their own opposite fears into the conversation. Jamie grew up in a legalistic Christian environment where death meant standing before a terrifying judgment (Hebrews 9:27). Donna, raised in a Jewish family with no teaching about the afterlife, saw death as oblivion—just the end. Neither background made “to die is gain” feel true.From there they walk through the passages that actually address the fear. In 1 Corinthians 15 the sting of death is sin (separation from God, self, and others), and the power of sin is the law. In Hebrews 2 Jesus came to deliver those who, through the fear of death, were held in bondage their entire lives. Then they spend the rest of the episode in 1 John 4: God is love. Perfect love casts out fear. Fear expects crisis and judgment as punishment. We are as blameless in this life as Jesus is. Love is not defined by our love for God but by His love for us, demonstrated in the Son. Anything that removes Christ as the incarnate Word is the spirit of antichrist.The practical path they point to is the same one they always return to: sit with God in listening prayer (ideally with someone else), confess the specific fears about death that were handed to you, and let Romans 12:1–2 do its work—stop conforming to the old patterns of thinking and be renewed. Perfect love doesn’t just comfort you about dying; it removes the fear so you can actually live.

A worldview is not what you see. It is the lens you look through.

When adversity comes, most of us close the windows.
We back away from God. We hide from the threat. We change our posture the moment the thing we prayed for starts falling apart.
Daniel doesn’t.

Take Risks — Faith is spelled risk. Don’t raise children who are self-protecting and risk-averse. Jesus said the one who tries to save his own life will lose it. Humans are designed for transcendence.

The greatest gift you can give your kids and grandkids is not control.
It’s teaching them how to hear the voice of the Shepherd more clearly than the voice of the enemy — so their identity comes from God alone, not from people, performance, or possessions.
Because one day they will be alone in the world.
And the question is: whose voice will be loudest in their head?
This is Kingdom life.
Realistic. Relational. Risky.
And full of joy.

What if the most joyful person in the room is still carrying a deep wound?

During a recent Catalyst Training, Jamie and Donna Winship and their coaches demonstrated the Identity Exchange process with an international participant who seemed to have it all together. She was exuberant, grateful, and full of life. Yet when they asked a simple question—“Where are you experiencing conflict right now?”—a longstanding family dispute over inherited land surfaced. That present tension led them back through a trail of memories to a shocking core wound from when she was only two years old.
In a war-torn region, her mother set her down and fled as guerrilla fighters approached. The rebels picked her up. Her father arrived, was nearly killed… and then one of the “enemies” looked into the little girl’s eyes and spared both their lives because of her.

When the coach asked, “Where was Jesus in that moment?” everything shifted. The woman realized the one holding her—the one who saw her when she was abandoned—was how Jesus was present. In that revelation she received her true identity: not powerless, unseen, or alone… but Reconciler. Ambassador.
And then the transformation became complete. She took that truth forward into her current family conflict and walked out of the session with clarity, courage, and a plan to bring peace.
