I'm delighted to welcome Briar Harvey to the podcast today all the way from Omaha, Nebraska. Briar is an extraordinary woman with an extraordinary story - I did not know her story before interviewing her and I'll let her tell it. A lot of this is how do we practise forgiveness every day - Briar has to do this for herself each and every day because of what happened and how she blamed herself for it.
Briar is a US podcaster and her show is called Latchkey Movies – all about taking a critical look at the movies your kids are watching without your supervision. Briar is also a systems expert, homeschooling mum of three and a trauma and loss survivor. In this podcast we explore the importance of forgiveness, how to make this a daily practice in our lives and the benefits this brings us.

Vikas is an emergency healthcare surgeon working in the NHS and in private healthcare. He is a surgeon with a difference because he practises mindfulness and meditation each and every day and trains other healthcare professionals to use mindfulness to help combat stress, burnout and fatigue. In this podcast we talk about the numerous benefits of practising mindfulness and why our inability to tame our minds isn’t down to our use of Smart phones at all but a basic human condition – our minds wander and we are constantly distractable. We also discuss how just 5 minutes a day can have an immediate impact and how living mindfully helps us to have far better responses to whatever is happening around us.

Karen is the inspirational gospel choir director of Kingdom Choir who shot to fame as a result of their rendition of ‘Stand by Me’ at the Royal Wedding in May 2018. Karen is also a dear friend of mine whom I’ve known for many years and who has encouraged so many people to find their voices and express themselves through singing in a choir. In this podcast we talk about some of the challenges and changes she has experienced since the Royal Wedding, what it is like to become a celebrity overnight and what that means in terms of being resilient and keeping in touch with your values and your integrity.
Karen and the Kingdom Choir are currently on the Stand By Me tour in the USA

Martin is a pilot captain for one of the UK’s major airlines. In 2007 he tragically lost his wife Elaine during a routine medical operation. This terrible event led to him founding the Clinical Human Factors Group to engage with the healthcare system and campaign for change within the NHS. His wife died as a result of a lack of “human factors” – it was all down to communication issues, leadership, teamwork ineffectiveness rather than medical incompetence.
Martin founded the Charity in 2007 with academics, clinicians, leaders and policy makers. He combines his work with the charity while working as an Airline Captain. Martin occasionally speaks at key events and is invited to input to policy development. His work is widely recognised and his many awards include the Royal College of Anaesthetists Medal and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In this podcast we talk about learning from human failure, adaptability and resilience and a need for real systems change with healthcare to address human factor behaviours.

Welcome to the last in Series 3 but by no means the least! It is an absolute joy to welcome the delightful Rachel Paling to the show today. Rachel Paling is a pioneering language coach. She works with corporates worldwide to enhance communication and cross-cultural performance within International Teams. I think what I love about Rachel is her tenacity and her willingness to go to any country on the planet to train, educate and encourage people to tap into a completely different part of their brain to embrace language learning in a different way. She is the leading light on this and works with teachers everywhere to support them. When she is not disrupting the language training industry (or perhaps at the same time!) Rachel is the warmest and most vibrant person. Rachel and I discuss exactly what makes up great communication skills and how to bring empathy into every single encounter.
