Political discussion has, recently, found itself focusing on National’s plan for an under-16 social media ban. Supported by the labour party, this bill has risen up the priority list as the election approaches.

Also supported to its first reading by Labour is the government’s rates cap of 4%, limiting rates increases by local governments, in a move that has seen concern from councils.

And also regarding Local Governments and their funding, the National government has ruled out a bed levy, drawing further criticism especially from those in Auckland and Queenstown.

Producer Liam chats with the University of Auckland’s Dr Tim Welch about the proposed plans for a second Harbour Crossing in Auckland and why it is taking so long to come to a decision and start work on one of these projects. 

And Liam also chats with Trevor Crosby on the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua community gardens in Mt Albert, which have recently been forced to shut down to make room for housing development despite previous assurances they would be preserved.

Since Auckland Harbour Bridge opened in 1959, there have been discussions to have a second harbour crossing but little action taken by successive government. Recently, the government and Mayor Wayne Brown agreed to another feasibility study for a crossing through Meola Reef. 

I spoke with Dr Tim Welch, a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering and Design at the University of Auckland, about the different proposed plans for a second harbour crossing and why it is taking so long to start construction on one of these projects.

Starting out in the 1990s by horticulture students from Unitec Mt Albert as an experiment in sustainable land management, the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua Gardens have established themselves as a haven for many rare plant and a model of urban gardening practices. 

When Unitec decided to sell much of its Carrington estate for housing development to the Crown, it was agreed that the gardens would be preserved. However, following a lengthy legal battle between the Crown and the gardens, the courts decided there was no requirement for the land to be saved from development, with the gardens being evicted from ther site on the 31st of July. 

Producer Liam spoke with Trevor Crosby, Treasurer for the Sanctuary Gardens, about the history and significance of this garden, the legal battles and efforts to protect it, and the future of the site and the garden community.
