9to5 Entertainment System (9ES)

It’s almost a rare thing that all three of us at 9ES watch the same movie these days. Rarer still is that we watch a movie that we all kind of agree on one way or the other. Rarer still is we all watch a movie that is almost as good as Hot Rod. Enter: Obsession.

I’ll say it again: what a year for horror 2026 is turning out to be.

Obsession is so good that I make the bold prediction that Inde Naverette might just get an Oscar nomination for her performance as Nikki. She’s that good.It’s a simple enough premise executed to damn near perfection and it should pretty much be a “must watch” if you’re any kind of fan of horror.

Also Elon Musk flew a car… sort of.

Over on Garbage Time Jono was convinced (by me) to watch Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 vision of Las Vegas: Showgirls. And while we both agree that it was bad, it is kind of undeniable that Verhoeven was going for… something. He missed the mark completely but he was definitely aspiring for strange “fun” satire that there was about a 0% chance of a 1995 audience ever caring about.

With Street Fighter hitting the theaters we took a look at Rolling Stone’s Top 25 Video Game adaptations and then decided there were too many TV shows so we skimmed through the list of live-action theatrical releases based on video games and well… it’s pretty bleak.

We recorded this week’s episode of the 9to5 Entertainment System as the results of the 2026 Quebec election were rolling in. Maybe it’s fitting then that we talk a lot about a bunch of horror movies in the second half, am I right anglophones?

I went to a couple of “big” concerts over the last few weeks. I saw Weezer and Gorillaz about a week apart. The contrast was pretty stark. Both shows were great. But where Weezer stuck to crowd favorites that were mostly recorded in the 90s, Gorillaz sampled from their full catalog, mixing up classics from 25 years ago with tracks off their latest and everything in between.

It leads me to suggest: Are Gorillaz the most consistently relevant act of the last 25 years? If you want to hear me fully defend this position you should probably listen to the episode. See? That’s how we get you!

2026 has been a pretty landmark year in the world of horror. I watched Resident Evil, Jon and I watched It Ends and Scott watched Obsession. We give you mostly spoiler-free takes on It Ends but if you want to hear our full deep-dive you should check out this week’s “Garbage Time”. For the other two films we provide more of a “first take” since we’ll wait until a few more of us get the chance to watch these flicks to give a more measured take.

A friend of mine saw Teenage Sex and Death At Camp Miasma by himself and apparently when he left the movie theater he found himself immediately wishing he had watched it with someone else so he could talk about it.

I feel the same way. I mean, I saw it Sarah but as much as my wife rules and loves genre films (as evidenced from the Fantasia Podcast Series we do together) she is not a fan of dissecting movies with me.

That’s why I have this podcast. Unfortunately, Jon and Scott haven’t seen Camp Miasma yet so sadly the conversation is a little one sided. But you should see it. You should listen to this episode and then rent Camp Miasma. I’ve planned your day.

We do get to rank a few movies for The List though which is become a bit of a rarity these days where two or more of us have all seen the same movie. The monoculture is dead you guys.

Jon and Scott both saw the new Supergirl movie so we get their takes on that and then Scott finally took my advice from episode 354 and watched Predator: Badlands. He even has some of the exact same hot takes as I did back then and thinks it ties in really with Alien: Earth. So listen to my version in episode 354 and listen to his version today.

Over on Garbage Time we finally talk about Southland Tales since it’s been a while. A quick search of the ole’ 9to5.cc website tells me that at least some of episode 150 was about Southland Tales. Episode 150 was 8 years ago so it’s fine that we talk about it now behind a paywall. That’s capitalism for you! We also sneak in a little wrestling talk with a classic round of “AEW vs WWE” and round things off with softball and Star Wars. “Softball & Star Wars” could be the title of Scott’s hip-hop mixtape.

When I think about things from my formative years that people will definitely think of as old time and quaint within a few years, “video store” is always near the top of my list.

Video rental stores perhaps even more so.

The idea of paying money and risking pretty exorbitant late fees to bring a video cassette to your home for a few days must seem incredibly foreign now to the youth of today. The library still exists but that’s the library, it’s basically free! And it certainly doesn’t smell of popcorn and have a big “Blockbuster” sign outside.

Anyways, the vast majority of this episode pays homage to one of the great video rental traditions of yesteryear: the staff recommendations.

Starting in my later high-school years and well into college the first stop at any trip to the video rental store was the staff recommendations. Doubly so if there was a staffer that you had hit it off with in the past whose tastes aligned with yours. These folks watched movies all day. I was only going to be watching one movie this weekend. Their picks, and by extension their expertise, were invaluable. Ideally these weren’t new releases or movies everyone has already seen a dozen times, these were diamonds in the rough that only the seasoned video rental employee had seen. And, if you trusted them enough perhaps you would find your new favorite movie that nobody else had seen before.

So today we do the exercise: What are 9ES’ staff picks? This will likely become a recurring segment.

Garbage Time starts off pretty firmly rooted in yet another nostalgic trip down memory lane: we half-remember the joys of Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law. We also catch up on some of early feelings regarding Lanterns and Widow’s Bay. Then the old nostalgia monsters rears its head again and we close things off with some half baked memories of the 2000s run of Battlestar Galactica.

I think historically I’ve probably been to the Vans Warped Tour more than Scott has but here we are in the year 2026 and I was sitting home and our boy Scott was out there at the Vans Warped Tour watching punk rock, skateboarding and pro-wrestling like it’s 1997.

How much did tickets to the Warped Tour cost this year? I’m not even sure. Pretty sure it was more than $30 I paid when I was in high school though.

Montreal has always been a city that has loved punk rock. You don’t even need to look that far back to see the two nights of sold out shows at Olympic Park for NOFX last year. Of course, that was 2024. Not last year at all. Time is a flat circle and also meaningless.

Scott went to both days of Vans Warped Tour this year AND went to go see Chance the Rapper celebrate the 10th anniversary of Coloring Book in the span of two weeks. Big week for the big man with bad knees.

Anyways, I saw Spiderman: Brand New Day and while it was definitely one of my favorite recent Marvel movies I have some strong opinions. Some of those opinions are definitely nits that I’ve picked but they are frustrating because it’s so close to being actually good and not just superhero good.

So I’ve been with Sarah over 18 years. In that time we have watched probably hundreds of horror movies. We’ve both got a stomach for even some of the more “hardcore” films the like of High Tension and Martyrs. Heck – we watched A Serbian Film in theaters at Fantasia. But there was always one movie that was too horrific for her to ever consider watching. That film? Gremlins.

Why?

“Because they pop out of the toilet.”

For years I have tried to tell her that first of all, that’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch and that second of all: she’s a grownup now and hard as that hit when she was a kid there is just no way that scene bothers her anymore. Well, it took 18 years but after listening to the “What Went Wrong” podcast episode of Gremlins she finally decided to watch it with me.

Damn that movie is great. More unhinged puppets in films please.

We also watched Backrooms but honestly there’s so much more to say about Gremlins if I’m being honest.  I also went to Osheaga and we talk about that a little but you can listen to a whole episode of the show I do with Sarah if you want to know more about all that.

Anyways, over on Garbage Time Scott has discovered modern video games. He played through Red Dead Redemption and his eyes were opened. Video games are a lot different now. Even a game that is 13 years old is still drastically more involved and has better storytelling than the games he was playing circa 2001. Remember Scott, 2001 was 25 years ago.

If you haven’t seen the clip of Tommaso Ciampa pulling a Bobby Orr jersey out of a trash can in the middle of a hardcore match at AEW Redemption then you can probably go ahead and do that now.

Or don’t. (That’s what they call a “callback“).

AEW had their first pay-per-view in Montreal and I was happy to have made it out. Seeing Kenny Omega hit the One-Winged Angel in the middle of the Bell Centre is kind of like the wrestling equivalent to seeing Sidney Crosby score an OT game winner live. We spend the first half of the episode giving a rundown of the whole PPV so fair warning there.

You know who else was in town this weekend? The one and only Weird Al Yankovic. Jono took his kid to see him at Just for Laughs and endured a massive crowd and a run of openers who apparently thought working blue in front of a family-friendly parody legend was a solid booking choice.

Meanwhile Scott’s been watching Ride or Die on Prime and is fully on board with Hannah Waddingham as a tall, terrifying spy who still has a best friend who has no idea she kills people for a living. Scott’s take that it’s basically the first half of Kingsman if Kingsman didn’t get stupid is a pretty interesting endorsement tbh.

If you haven’t seen the clip of Conor McGregor doing a flying jumpkick and then immediately blow his knee out at UFC 329 then you can probably go ahead and do that now. Or don’t. It’s like 15 seconds long. We do talk about it for a long time though because despite being an absolute crazy person the man is somehow always interesting.

Another interesting man? Sam Neill. He certainly didn’t have the most prolific of careers but he was in a LOT of stuff that I enjoyed. Even if he did nothing other than Jurassic Park, Event Horizon and In the Mouth of Madness he would still sit comfortably as one of my favorite actors on just those three performances alone.

Finally, we catch up on a few movies we’ve watched recently like The Bride!, The Union and Jack Ryan’s Ghost War. A bunch of perfectly cromulent films that our reviews of may or may not convince to watch or avoid them.

If you haven’t seen the photos of the massive crowd that Angine de Poitrine drew at the Jazz Fest last weekend you should do yourself a favour and check them out. I haven’t really hear precise estimates of attendance but I think it’s easily around 100,000 people based on what I know of the layout and rough capacity.

We’ve talked a little bit about what makes Angine de Poitrine the band of the moment right now and I think their popularity is almost a direct rejection of AI. Something that sounds and looks so different from everything else while still being pretty accessible just pierces through the monoculture slop that seems to be everywhere. These guys rule and I’m glad the world is getting a taste of some weirdo Quebecois culture.

Scott talks at length about Rambo: Forces of Freedom which he presumably stumbled up while watching the MAXOUT POWERBLOCK over on YouTube. I love how toy and cartoon adaptations of R-Rated movies were a thing in the 80s and I’m a little bummed we don’t see more of that anymore. Where are my Requiem for a Dream animated specials? Why can’t I play with my Midsommar playset with real old-people-jumping-off-cliff action?

Anyways, over on Garbage Time Jon watched Fury Road and things have grown even murkier in his mind about what movie should top our Movie List. He also watched David Cronenberg’s Crash and now we’re all wondering if we should be turned on by car wrecks. We finish things off talking about the final season of Euphoria and Back to the Future.

So Sarah broke her leg pretty badly a few weeks ago so we kick this episode off with our first hand experiences with the Quebec healthcare system. You know, the Quebec healthcare system that Scott works for? I guess we’re kind of experts on the subject.

You heard it here first, this podcast is a medical drama now.

Against my better judgement I watched about 10 minutes of UFC Freedom 250 (it was in between periods of Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final). It was… something else. From some jackass yelling “Michelle Obama is a man” to chants of “Fuck Him Up!” ringing out across the White House lawn it was pure Idiocracy.

Meanwhile, Danhausen is an actual dark magician and the Knicks win the big NBA award trophy thanks to his dark powers. If I asked you, what is the name of the NBA Championship trophy, what would you guess? I’m sure Scott knows the answer. I had to look it up. It’s technically the Larry O’Brien Championship trophy. You heard it here first.

Keith is almost done with Euphoria Season 3 and it’s a heck of a left turn. It’s honestly pretty good, but has almost nothing to do with the first two seasons. It’s kind of like in Season 8 of Archer when they’re suddenly in 1947 Los Angeles. It’s got the same characters but it also really has very little to do with everything that came before.

Over on Garbage Time Jon makes the argument that The Matrix should probably be at the very top of The List and he might be right. It (along with Alien) could definitely jump a few spots. We finish things off talking about whether or not Ridley Scott is a fraud and close off with Scott’s recent viewing of The Thing as a family affair.
