  • Sloan Kooshan & Dawn McSweeney – GPYS 301

The Montreal arts and entertainment podcast that asks Sloan Kooshan & Dawn McSweeney: Where would you travel next? And: What’s the most definitive art piece that you enjoy? Those questions asked by Daniel Glick and Evelyne Côté in our Osheaga Special Episode.

On this week’s episode Sarah and I are talking to Sloan Kooshan and Dawn McSweeney about the upcoming SWANA Comedy Show at La Poubelle Magnifique on August 25th at 8 pm. This edition of the SWANA Comedy Show is more than just comedy—it’s a fundraiser for Palestine. All proceeds will go towards The Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund, an organization dedicated to providing critical medical attention to the children of Gaza. For more information on the fund or to make a donation there directly head to https://gabusittahchildrensfund.org or better yet come out to the show and make a donation in person!  This edition of the SWANA Comedy Show is produced as part of Forget the Box’s “Your Show Here” community initiative.

We talk to Sloan about his origin as comedian, the differences between audiences here and in Europe, finding your audience, the difficulties of being a “good” political comedian and much, much more! It’s also our first round of the NEW questions in our 5 Questions Segment! How did we come up with these new questions? Well you should probably go back and listen to Episode 300 if you haven’t already.

For more information about the SWANA Comedy Show check out the Facebook Event.

  • 9ES316: Laughing At Professionals

I guess it’s an election year so politics is going to creep into our podcast more and more until November. This time we talk about the Right Wing getting really mad that France did “The Last Supper” in drag and how “Republicans are Weird” is now a trend.

Let’s see if we can look at a quote and determine if it was spoken by a sitting Senator or a 5th Grader:

“They called us weird so I’ll call them weirder.”

Of course it’s a Senator – that would be Marco Rubio. Both side pointing fingers at each other and going “you’re weird” is where we’re at in politics I guess.

Anyhow, Jon finally watched The Flash which means for some reason that I can’t really explain we have now all watched The Flash. That means it’s time to rank that bad boy on the list!

Finally we close things off talking about how Marvel has pivoted away from Kong towards Doctor Doom by casting Rober Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom. Will it work? Who knows? Does anyone care? Yes. Lots of people. The people who listen to this podcast.

Meanwhile over on Garbage Time… we talk a LOT about Star Wars. In all of its many Star Shapes and Star Sizes. Keith watched all 4 hours and change of Jenny Nicholson’s take down of “Galactic Starcruise” (aka The Star Wars Hotel), Scott watched The Acolyte and there’s probably some other Star Wars stuff in there too. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated.

  • Osheaga Podcast 2024 (Unofficial) – Comedown Edition

    That’s a wrap on Osheaga 2024. It’s over.

We can all go back to our lives now and try to cling to the memories of Osheaga as they fade away like dimming stage lights. Sarah and I took in an absurd amount of bands this year and managed to drag our tired asses over to the Ed Banger 20th Anniversary Party on Saturday night like complete lunatics (watching a back-to-back set of Busy P and Tiga took my right back to my 20s).

Osheaga flew by this year – probably because there was barely a minute between acts we wanted to catch. It was like we got into the gate on Friday afternoon and a long blink later we were cheering for the closing moments of Justice. We saw so many bands and now is the time where we run through the schedule and share our takes with you. Who was awesome? Who sucked? Who are we excited to see next time they come to town? Listen now!

Anyways, this is it until next year family. At least for Osheaga. There’s still plenty of concerts that you can and should be going to all year long between now and then.

Osheaga 2025 takes place August 1st to August 3rd next year and we’ll see you all there!

Osheaga 2025 runs from August 1st to August 3rd at Parc Jean Drapeau. Check out osheaga.com for more info and tickets.

      • Go Plug Yourself 300!! w/ Alex Rose

The Montreal podcast that would win every single “I Quit” match because we’ve been around for 13 years and we’re not going anywhere baby!

Look, I’m fully aware that this isn’t actually episode 300 – that milestone quietly came and went probably sometime back in 2023. But we didn’t put a number on every episode of “Go Quarantine Yourself” during the pandemic, we don’t put numbers on the Shit Shows for the most part and whenever we just catch up with the hosts we don’t usually attach an official number to those episodes either. So whatever man – it counts! 300 more!

We recorded this one live (pal) as a part of the World’s Smallest Comedy Festival that has been running for the past week and a half and it was a blast. We had friend of the show Alex Rose come on to talk a little about the Fantasia Festival as it enters it’s final weekend and Walter J. Lyng and Lawrence Corber joined me for all the fun at Hurley’s.

Important Podcast News:We updated the questions for 5 Questions! Finally! That means that starting in episode 301 we’ll have a new set of questions to bother our guests with at the end of each episode!

        Enjoy the show!

      • 9ES315: Dysfunctional Insanity

Honestly all of the news surrounding the 2024 election cycle is equal parts exhausting and terrifying.

The pop-culture movie nerd in me kind of feels like in the trilogy of Trump running for president, the 2024 election is where the series is really going off the rails. It’s kind of like the Fast and the Furious, where so much crazy shit has gone down in the first two outings that they’re stuck sending characters into space at a certain point.

Is that where we’re headed? Are the presidential nominees going to fly into space in their cars? Would it really be that surprising if that happened?

Now that I’ve written about the 2024 election a little in this blurb maybe this episode will get censored by the algorithm. True story, if you do a Google search for “Kamala Harris” (at least here in Canada) you will see “Some results may have been delisted consistent with local laws.” at the bottom of the page. That’s a little weird, right?

Anyways, we talk a bunch about nerdy shit and movies and the Fantasia International Film Festival for the second half so if all this political stuff gets to you just move right along to the part where we start talking about Deadpool & Wolverine.

Meanwhile over on Garbage Time… Jon watched Batman Returns and that gets us all uppity about which of the first 4 Batman movies is the best. The answers may shock you! Also somehow Jono hasn’t watched “The Batman” yet so he should really get on that. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated.
