Osheaga 2024 is less than 2 weeks away!
Our Unofficial Osheaga Podcast is back for 2024! It’s time to finish off checking out Sunday’s lineup!
Every two weeks Sarah and I have been digging into the entire lineup of this year’s Osheaga to give you music recommendations all summer long. We’ve been picking ten acts from each day, talking about them and playing clips of their songs to give you a feel for their music and why we think they’ll be an amazing show.
But wait – you don’t need us to tell you why you should probably check out Green Day now do you? So (for the purposes of this show) we ruled out the entire top line of each day of the lineup. So yes, that means you will need to decide for yourself if you’re going to see the likes of SZA or not. Trust us, if you listen to all of these episodes you might find yourself running back and forth between stages all weekend and discovering your new favourite artist.
Here is our second batch of 5 “non-headline” acts we think are worth checking out for Sunday! For each act we pick a song we talk about why we love the artist:
Osheaga runs from August 2nd to August 4th at Parc Jean Drapeau. Check out osheaga.com for more info and tickets.
All audio clips are copyright of their respective owners and used solely with the intention of promoting Osheaga.
Our intro song is Paradise Engineering (instrumental) by YACHT and is licensed under a Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License.
Keith does all sorts of things here on 9to5.cc, he works with the other founders on 9to5 (illustrated), co-hosts our two podcasts: The 9to5 Entertainment System and Go Plug Yourself and blogs here as The Perspicacious Geek.

Hey, did you know that Go Plug Yourself 300 is happening LIVE as part of the World’s Smallest Comedy Festival on July 22nd at 6 pm at Hurleys?
Well guess what? It is. One of more than 500 shows that will be happening over the course of ten days (July 21st to July 31st) hosted by the absolute maniacs behind Montreal’s beloved “World’s Smallest Comedy Night” each and every week.
So guess what? We have three of those wonderful maniacs on the show once again this week to talk about Anne of Green Gables, Prince Edward Island, manspreading and probably a million other things that I’m not remembering right now. There’s a whole part that I don’t even know about where I get up to go get more drinks and Walter is left to his own devices with Troy and Vance. That’s audio that I am about to publish and I have no idea what it might be! Walter said I might have to remove it! But I didn’t!
That’s the kind of show we run here and that’s the kind of raw unfiltered nonsense you’ll be in for if you come down to Hurley’s on Monday.
In the meantime, sit back, relax and enjoy this show and head to troystark.net for more info and tickets to the World’s Smallest Comedy Festival (including episode 300 of this very show!)
As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude!

What can we say about Avengers of Justice: Farce Wars that hasn’t already been said? Apparently a whole lot.
Avengers of Justice literally does not have any ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. I am pretty sure that means it doesn’t actually exist.
It’s possible that we’ve all had a collective fever dream and somehow it manifested Avengers of Justice.
I can’t even find any news articles or anything about it beyond the casting announcement. The guy who produced it (Shaun Sanghani) seems to have produced legitimate films (you will notice on that list that Avengers of Justice doesn’t have its own Wikipedia page). Why did he produce this?
How did they get genuine actors to star in this? Steve Rannazzisi and Amy Smart are real actors you’ve seen in real films and television shows! We may never know how this got made, but Scott watched it so there’s that.
We close off the back half of the show by talking about a quote that I believe originated in this article.
“Software developers are the wizards and shamans of the modern age. We ought to use our powers with the austerity and integrity such power implies.”
How do you feel about that statement? Well, we will tell you how we feel about in this episode.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time… by some happy accident both Scott and Keith watched Total Recall in the last two weeks and Jon has watched it pretty recently. So this episode of Garbage Time is really mostly about Total Recall. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated.

Our Unofficial Osheaga Podcast is back for 2024! It’s time that we talk to… wait, let me get this straight… we’re talking to evenko?
That’s right! Daniel Glick and Evelyne Côté from evenko were kind enough to join Sarah and I at the back of Grumpy’s Bar on Bishop Street to talk about this year’s edition of Oseheaga. Daniel Glick and Evelyne Côté have both been working for evenko for a long, long time so we talk about the earliest editions of Osheaga, ÎleSoniq (which is Evelyne’s baby) and so much more. Both Evelyne and Daniel have been a part of so much music history here in Montreal that it was truly a privilege to sit down and have a few beers with them to talk about all things Osheaga. Evelyne and Daniel share some of their favorite concerts from the past and share a few “can’t miss” acts from Osheaga 2024.
So sit back, relax and enjoy the show and obviously we want to see you at Osheaga in a few weeks!

I’m really happy that Godzilla Minus One won an Academy Award. We take the piss out of the Oscars almost every year. There’s something wrong with a system that takes a look at hundreds of movies a year and then goes “these are the best 10” and eventually “this is the best one.” So much of it is subjective and it’s well documented that the Academy has a “type” of movie that it rewards.
Sure it won in a special effects category but there’s something refreshing about Godzilla Minus One winning an Oscar all the same. Godzilla movies don’t win Oscars man. That’s crazy. Anyhow it did and that’s awesome. Scott watched it and loved it.
Keith played a round of Atmosfear over the weekend and that was wild in its own way. The game came out in 1991 and it certainly feels like a 33 year old game. You roll dice and move forward and pick up “Chance” and “Fate” cards. Sounds like Monopoly in a lot of ways and in a lot of ways it is.
Except there’s a weird old guy screaming at you on your television while you play.
That’s the game!
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time – we talk about the disappointing (to some) ending of the NHL Playoffs and the excellent BlackBerry series on CBC Gem. Jon also tries to figure out if we can reverse engineer free internet over your cellphone but not the way you think. Finally we talk about some old HBO shows like The Sopranos, The Wire and Oz. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated.

Osheaga 2024 is 39 days away! Our Unofficial Osheaga Podcast is back for 2024! It’s time to keep checking out Saturday’s lineup!

Listen up you beautiful babies – this podcast has always been adjacent to one of Montreal’s greatest comedy nights “The World’s Smallest Comedy Night” live each week from Hurley’s in the heart of downtown Montreal. So much so that this very real news article links the foundation of the “World’s Smallest Comedy Night” right back to a recording of this very podcast some 6 years ago. So it stands to reason that Go Plug Yourself is one of the first places you are hearing about the World’s Smallest Comedy Festival which will be taking place next month from July 21st to the 31st mostly at Hurley’s Irish Pub on Crescent Street.
Walter J. Lyng and Troy Stark came to the back of Grumpy’s to talk all about their sales jobs and also the second edition of The World’s Smallest Comedy Festival. This is doubly exciting for Go Plug Yourself because guess what? We will be recording Go Plug Yourself 300 LIVE on July 22nd at 6 pm from Hurley’s as part of the festival! Say whaaaaat!? I’ll say it again.
Go Plug Yourself 300 will be LIVE at The World’s Smallest Comedy Festival – it will be our first live episode in over 4 years! That’s crazy!
There’s plenty of other (realistically better) comedy options for you to enjoy for all 10 days of the festival as well so you should keep tabs on troystark.net for the full lineup. So sit back, relax, listen to this podcast and keep an eye out for more announcements regarding the true spirit of comedy in Montreal.
Enjoy the show!

It is no surprise that at least one of us saw Furiosa pretty close to it’s release. You need only look at “The List” and see Fury Road proudly sitting in the #2 spot to know that at least some of us on this show would happily check out Furiosa on the biggest screen possible in a movie theater.
I don’t know why Scott hates Mad Max movies.
Furiosa is a peculiar beast of a movie – it’s certainly no Fury Road and it probably isn’t even The Road Warrior. Maybe the 5 chapters of the film would have been better served by being a 5 part prestige television series on HBO or something. The “Stowaway to Nowhere” action scene may still be one of the greatest action sequences in cinematic history though.
There’s something a little bittersweet about going to see Cat Power, Modest Mouse and The Pixies all perform on the same stage. Cat Power started releasing music in 1992, Modest Mouse in 1993 and the Pixies started in 1986. That’s over a century of music making and a lot of the music is stuff I associate with high-school and college. Aging sucks man.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time – Keith discusses 10 Things that Made No Sense In The Predator (1987).This inevitably leads to the boys just talking a bunch about The Predator. Keith also listened to Random Access Memories by Daft Punk in the very high-tech listening room at the Phi Center in Montreal, which is something you can do until August 11 if you’re interested. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated.
