The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks Boum (the comic book artist and creator of The Jellyfish): What is something that you’re really good at that nobody knows about? That question asked by our previous guest Raquel Maestre back in episode 294.
Anyone who listens to us over on 9ES knows that I’m a huge fan of comic books. I have read a lot of comics in my time from mainstream comics to small indie zines. So it’s with at least some degree of authority that I can tell you that “The Jellyfish” by Boum is one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. Sarah (who is co-hosting this episode) doesn’t read nearly as many comics as I do but she is also sometimes harder to please – so it’s a double recommendation that Sarah enjoyed “The Jellyfish” so much that she wants to re-read it again after blasting through the entire thing in a single sitting.
We were extremely lucky to sit down with Boum at the back of our usual haunt Grumpy’s to talk about “The Jellyfish”, comic books, the Quebec health care system, animation and eyesight. This is an extremely fun episode so sit back and enjoy!
If you’re in Montreal you’ll have two chances to meet up with Boum (and hopefully get yourself a signed copy of “The Jellyfish” in the process) – this May 9th at Drawn and Quarterly MTL and the weekend of May 24-26 at the Montreal Comic Arts Festival. If you’re in the rest of Canada take a look below for the full lineup of Boum’s upcoming appearances this Spring promoting ‘The Jellyfish”.

I daresay that The 9to5 Entertainment System might be the only podcast in the history of podcasts to discuss Godzilla x Kong, Roadhouse and Ingmar Bergman’s 1982 opus Fanny and Alexander in the same hour.
Let’s call talking about a massive backdoor discovered in Linux to be a special seasoning on that triumvirate of great cinema.
Who’s to say which of those three films is better? Us. We are who is to say.
The fact that Godzilla x Kong finally understands that it can make one of the kaijus the actual man character is pretty interesting. We grew up in an age of entertainment where a human viewpoint character was often present, but largely unnecessary. Who was watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Transformers for April O’Neil and Spike Witwicky? Nobody. Our heroes were the turtles and talking trucks. So too can it be with King Kong.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time – we start off by talking about comics like the 2015 run of Masters of Kung Fu and the Arrowverse comic book tie in from 12 years ago and then things take on a much darker tone when Scott finds out about Ed Piskor’s passing in real time. It’s pretty heavy stuff and comes with the heaviest of trigger warnings. The Montreal arts & entertainment podcast that asks comedian and producer Raquel Maestre: “What’s something you can’t do that you that you wish you could?” That question asked as always by Dan Carin back in episode 293.
When we last spoke to Raquel Maestre on the show back in episode 261 she was still relatively new to the comedy scene. Fast forward to 2024 and she’s producing multiple hit comedy shows like “A Very Pretentious Comedy Show” (which is about to go on hiatus so be sure to check out the next edition this Sunday March 31st at Café La Ligne Verte) along with the weekly Poly Mic at Notre Dame de Quilles on Beaubien.
But that’s not all! I mentioned that “A Very Pretentious Comedy Show” would be going on hiatus but here’s the exciting part where I tell you why: Raquel Maestre is bringing a one-woman show to this year’s Montreal Fringe Festival!
*applause break*
Anyhow, she’s got plenty to plug and that’s the name of the show so obviously we spend time talking about obscure video games like Victoria 3 and Basketball Manager – all the fun of spreadsheets in a video game! We also get introduced to a Spanish Sesame Street character named Espinete! And Walter J. Lyng is co-hosting! So sit back and relax (even if you’re on your bicycle) and enjoy episode 294 of Go Plug Yourself with Raquel Maestre!
Enjoy the show!

We spend a lot of time in this episode talking about the fact that Scott chose to watch Madame Web instead of literally almost any other movie that has come out in the last 12 months. Why did he choose to do that to himself?
I mean, I’m not going to expressly say that we were going to make him watch Madame Web the next time his turn came up for “Best Movie Ever” but I am also not going to say that we were not.
Think about it. Scott is a busy guy. He’s a dad. He works at the hospital and has to get up at ungodly hours to do so. He’s got a movie date night with the wife and he chooses Madame Web. Scott’s got kind of a history of sometimes making questionable decisions so maybe this isn’t a complete surprise but come on now. COME ON NOW.
He should have just watched The Running Man.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time – Scott and Jon watched the trailer the new “The Crow” movie and apparently it looks pretty bad and glossy. Glossy and polished are not words that I associate with The Crow. We also talk about Scarlet Johansson’s propensity for being robots. Maybe she’s a robot! I think it’s important that you go back and re-read that sentence and mentally pronounce ‘robot’ correctly. Then we dive into the Battleworlds/Secret Wars Marvel run of 2015, which I’m sure we’ll return to next week because there is just so damn much of it. Enjoy the show! If that sounds cool then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

The Montreal arts and entertainment podcast that asks Montreal stand-up and sketch comedian Daniel Carin: Who is the teacher/mentor that influenced you the most? That question asked by the awesome punk rockers Taxi Girls back in episode 292.
Daniel Carin joins Lawrence Corber and I to talk about the deep meaningful things in life. Things like wrestling, the cancellation of the Just for Laughs festival and a religious educator that told a young Daniel Carin “You’re funny – and not just for a kid.” A moment that changed his life forever.
If you haven’t already, you should do yourself a favour and get yourself a ticket or two (or three) to “An Evening with Ladies & Gentlemen” coming up April 2nd at Theatre Saint Catherine.
Ladies & Gentlemen are an award winning sketch comedy troupe consisting of actor/comedian/bon-vivant and playboy Chris Sandiford (“What We Do In The Shadows” / “God’s Favourite Idiot”) and writer/comedian/mole person Daniel Carin (“N/A” / “TBD”)
While you’re at it you can also subscribe to Daniel Carin’s easy-listening radio show “Advice by the Fireplace” if you find yourself thinking “boy – that Keith is just like WAY too much sometimes.”
Anyways, sit back, relax and enjoy the show and decide for yourself whether or not we are witnessing the death of comedy in the fair city of Montreal.

I feel like Scott and Jon did not truly appreciate how terrible the “Willy Wonka Experience” was for those unfortunate enough to find themselves trapped in that horrible Glasgow warehouse. From the “What’s On Glasgow” website visitors of the Wonka Experience were promised:
“Enchanting Environments: Immerse yourself in visually stunning and intricately designed settings inspired by Roald Dahl’s timeless tale. From the iconic Chocolate Room to the whimsical Inventing Room, each space promises a visual feast.
Interactive Adventures: Engage with the Wonka world like never before! Embark on the exhilarating Tunnel of Fear, reliving the iconic boat scene with a thrilling twist. Enter the Inventing Room and witness magical concoctions come to life. Explore the wonky wonders of Wonka’s TV Lab.”
And so much more!
Instead they got this:
Mashable has probably the best collection of the disastrous Wonka Experience films and videos but the part that I won’t get over is the poor guy playing Willy Wonka just staring into the void sitting in his car while children cried around him and everything fell into pure chaos.
Anyways – Keith went to Austin and talks about all the cool stuff that he saw, did and ate. He also found out what a “moon tower” was even though he’s seen Dazed and Confused about a hundred times.
We talk about a bunch of other stuff like comic books, the final death of Vice, the New York Times vs Chat GPT, Scott Pilgrim and close off the show by having Scott and Keith chuckle merrily while quoting Shoresy.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time – Keith talks about riding a horse in Texas. He also talks about the fantastic American Movie (1999) which he put into Garbage Time thinking that Scott and Jon had seen it but somehow they have not (or at least they don’t remember it). Scott played My Hero Academia The Board Game and we talk about Sting’s last match at AEW Revolution. Enjoy the show! The Montreal podcast that asks Montreal punk rockers Taxi Girls the question: “If you could travel anywhere and anywhen in the world – where and when would you go?” That question was asked by Dan Kestler-D’amours back in episode 291.
I’ve known Lynn (drummer of the Taxi Girls) for quite a while now. We met back when she was a skater for La Racaille as part of Montreal Roller Derby. So it’s only fitting that I invited my co-announcer from those roller derby days to co-host this episode with: Single Malt Scott! You might know him better as “Scott from 9ES.”
It was no surprise to me at all when I found out that Lynn was a rock n’ roll drummer back in the day and even less of a surprise when I saw she was part of an awesome band called the Taxi Girls when the debuted on the scene in 2022! Since then they’ve been all over the place, recently opening for a little band you may have heard of called NOBRO.
We sat down with Jamie, Vera and Lynn and our favorite spot (Grumpy’s) and shot the shit for your enjoyment. It’s all punk rock, music and roller derby this episode so sit back, relax and enjoy the show! It’s a real guest and everything!
If you want to give Taxi Girls a listen check out their video for Sunshine now! Keep up to date with the Taxi Girls on Instagram @taxigirlsmontreal and if you’re really down go to L’Esco on April 24th to see Taxi Girls, New Vogue and Cornette!

Long time listeners of the show know that Jon loves himself some Cory Doctorow and you can take the word of the man himself: ‘Enshittification’ is coming for absolutely everything.
Seriously, give the article a read. If you don’t know what is enshittification is here’s the gist from Mr. Doctorow:
“So what’s enshittification and why did it catch fire? It’s my theory explaining how the internet was colonised by platforms, why all those platforms are degrading so quickly and thoroughly, why it matters and what we can do about it. We’re all living through a great enshittening, in which the services that matter to us, that we rely on, are turning into giant piles of shit. It’s frustrating. It’s demoralising. It’s even terrifying.”
Technology is rapidly breaking its promise to better our lives so we might as well all just sit down and play board games and Dungeons & Dragons. So obviously we talk about Arkham Horror 3rd Edition and the upcoming D&D Module “Vecna: Eve of Ruin.”
We wrap the whole thing in a comic book boy and talk about Deadpool and Wolverine, The Marvels and some comics that Scott and Keith are reading.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time – Keith has finished up with True Detective: Night Country and he has thoughts and opinions! Thoughts and opinions that are so spicy they are behind a paywall! Bwahaha! We also circle back to movies that lie to the audience in the trailers and Scott watched both seasons of Shoresy so give your balls a tug. Enjoy the show! If that sounds cool then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

The Montreal podcast that is giving you a re-run from 12 years ago!
So way back in 2012 we recorded our 8th ever episode of Go Plug Yourself with Television’s Mike Paterson to promote his Valentine’s Day comedy special that was taking place at… the name escapes me. Funny Works? Comedy Jerks? Funnytown Laugh House? Yeah, that’s the one.
Anyways, we were late in posting that episode because everything was a shit show back then and we didn’t have our shit together. Here we are now in 2024 with history repeating itself. We were planning on having Dan Carin on this week’s episode but apparently his computer is too old to handle our recording software.
It’s been 12 years and we have learned nothing.
Anyways, so this episode is sort of about a Valentine’s Day comedy night that happened 12 years ago, but it’s also about Burger King and probably wrestling. Listen, I didn’t go back and listen to the entire thing so if any of us say something offensive please try to remember that it was a different time. I promise that we will be back with a real guest as soon as we can. It’s been a rough couple of weeks and we appreciate your support. Whoever you are. Our listeners are the real Valentine.
Enjoy the show!

Man, I was really hoping this episode was just going to be about Last Action Hero. Last Action Hero was great. Great soundtrack, great action, an animated talking cat and Tywin Lannister hiding his exploding eye in sneaky places.
But no, while we definitely do talk quite a bit about Last Action Hero in this episode we also dive into the depravity of Vince McMahon. Vince has been in the news (again) and it seems like Behind the Bastards might need to make a follow up episode because boy, this is some next level stuff.
You might want to just straight up skip over the parts where we talk about his alleged transgressions because it’s all just real fuckin’ gross.
Don’t worry though, we save Last Action Hero for the back half so we go out with a feel good bang! But not before we talk about how the companies that make airplanes are not good at making airplanes anymore! Stay out of the skies kids you might fall!
We’ll see you in two weeks where Keith and Scott will have probably watched more Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Keith will probably be finished with True Detective: Night Country.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time – we talk about the NHL All Star Game and all that went along with it. Sure we talk a little about the game and the skills competition but we also talk about the most important part of the whole weekend: Michael Bublé on shrooms. Enjoy the show! If that sounds cool then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!
