  • Go Plug Yourself: It’s Only Hosts!

Look, sometimes it’s only the hosts.

Lawrence Corber and Chris Venditto are two of the funniest and best comedians in the city so it’s really like I have two guests on this episode. We talk about movies, comedy and more and then we end the episode with Venditto’s on De Vito. A brand new Go Plug Yourself segment.

    Enjoy the show!

As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude!

Chris Venditto is another funny person in Montreal who you can see all over the place and if you don’t want to miss him take the stage you should follow him on all the socials. He’s @chrisvenditto on Twitter and Instagram so you should follow him on those two things. He also produces shows with the guys at Perfect Bite Productions who you should also follow on Instagram and on Facebook.

Keith does all sorts of things here on 9to5.cc, he works with the other founders on 9to5 (illustrated), co-hosts our two podcasts: The 9to5 Entertainment System and Go Plug Yourself and sometimes blogs here as The Perspicacious Geek.

Lawrence Corber also produces some shows you may have heard of (you should probably check out the next Healthy Living show when you get a chance) and if you’re close with him you can call him Lully. The other way to call him “Lully” is to follow him on his socials. @Lully514 on Instagram.

  • 9ES298: The Bear Dances A Tango

I think the thing that struck me the most about the Barbie movie is that when Ken has a beach accident (despite being fully qualified for “Beach”) he receives prompt and free medical care. No long wait at the ER. No absurd medical bills after the fact. Barbie Land is a true utopia.

I probably took the wrong thing away from the Barbie movie.

We also talk about Captain Marvel and A Haunting in Venice but you can hear a million takes about those movies all over the internet.

    We know why you’re here.

You want us to talk about a 40 year old comic book where the Thing gets into a boxing match with a cosmic fighter known as “The Champion” at Madison Square Garden.

It’s one of Scott’s favorite comics of all time and it’s absolutely crazy, so obviously we spend about the last 20 minutes of the show talking about Marvel Two-In-One Annual # 7. It’s a classic story of a cosmic alien boxing promoter trying arrange some card of a boxing-super card that involves making Hulk, Wonderman, Sasquatch, Doc Samson, Thor, Colossus, Namor and The Thing fight a big space man.

    Comic books!

Meanwhile over on Garbage Time! On this week’s episode Jon reveals his diabolical plan to combine Expedition to the Barrier Peaks with a cult RPG from the 80s! We also talk about how Adventure Time might still be the best show in the world and then I once again try (and fail) to convince Scott to watch Andor. But he hates good television so he says no. Enjoy the show! If that sounds cool then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

  • Éloïse Marseille (Naked: The Confessions of a Normal Woman) – GPYS 288

The Montreal podcast that asks comic creator Éloïse Marseille: “What is the best non-fast food burger in Montreal?” – that question asked of course by James ‘Twiggy” McGee back in episode 287.

Before recording this episode Scott (from 9ES!) and I were talking about how strange it was going to be to meet Éloïse Marseille at the back of Grumpy’s to record this podcast. Why? Well, maybe you’ll understand after reading “Naked: The Confessions of a Normal Woman” (available now from Pow Pow Press). The comic reads like the most entertaining personal journal you’ve ever seen. If it wasn’t a published work I would feel like I had somehow invaded someone else’s privacy by reading it.

Of course Éloïse  has written and illustrated this with the purpose of putting it on display but still. Even before shaking her hand I had a tremendous amount of insight into what are normally private details and revelations about her life. That’s not to say the book isn’t fun. It’s extremely funny and entertaining throughout.

It’s also kind of nice to know that all those awkward, embarrassing moments from my teens and early 20s are continuing to play out again and again for a younger generation.

Do yourself a favour and ask your local library or comic shop to get a copy of “Naked: The Confessions of a Normal Woman” in whatever language your most comfortable reading in (it’s been out in French for a while but has just been released in English this week!). That reminds me! Éloïse will be at Librairie Drawn & Quarterly tonight! (November 9th @ 7:00 pm) – but I’m pretty sure that is also a great place to pick her book up even if you don’t make it out tonight.

  • 9ES297: Rainbow Tape

Seriously though – imagine being so uncertain of your values as an organization that you thought putting a ban on the colour of tape of hockey players were allowed to use was a good idea. What kind of out of touch garbage people were sitting around a conference room table and legitimately thinking “boy – we need to make sure none of these professional sport-boys use pride tape on their sticks.” Won’t somebody please think of the children!

There’s a part in this episode where Jon suggests that some of his neighbours have gone too far in their Halloween decorations. Decorations are too gruesome and intense! Something must be done. That’s right, the same person who watched Salo and Thanatomorphose multiple times is now asking his neighbours to calm down with the gory Halloween displays. Won’t somebody please think of the children!

The other big topic of this show has to do with the absolute garbage names the PWHL seem to have selected for their inaugural teams. We get into the whole list in the episode but let’s just say I can’t imagine Little Timmy will be too excited to wear a “Montreal Echo” jersey when he heads out to the local skating rink this winter. Won’t somebody please think of the children!

Meanwhile over on Garbage Time, Jono watched that Netflix documentary series about American Gladiators and honestly I just want to know whether or not Laser is ok or not. I’m pretty sure he’s still alive but I’m not going to look it up in case he isn’t. We also get into the age old debate of Marvel vs DC. Keith is reading a LOT of Marvel right now and while it seems to all be pretty good it certainly seems that the “highs” of DC are significantly higher. You be the judge! Enjoy! If that sounds cool then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

  • James “Twiggy” McGee Returns! – GPYS 287

The Montreal podcast that asks Montreal wrestler, improvisor and man-about-town James McGee: “What’s the craziest thing you’ve done to get out of a test/work/commitment?” That question asked by Kenny Streule and Cat Preston from Mainline Theatre’s Rocky Horror Show back in episode 286.

We’ve had James McGee on the show before. We’ll have James McGee on the show again. When you find yourself at the crossroads of talk show host, wrestling promoter and improvisor you are just bound to wind up on this show repeatedly. That’s just how things go around here.

I realized it has been about 3 years since we’ve had James on the show and that the last time was in 2020 and was what we now lovingly refer to as “peak pandemic” – man, time flies.  Let’s never do that again.

You can find James – quite literally – all over town. You can find him in the ring (occasionally) at BATTLEWAR, on stage at Mile End Improv (among many other stages) and probably other places too. Oh – did we mention that none other than The Dark Order’s Evil Uno will be at BATTLEWAR this Sunday at Foufs? Well we mentioned it now.

    Enjoy the show!

  • 9ES296: 3 of 7, ok 2 of 7

I am still shocked that Look Who’s Talking Now features the voice talents of Danny Devito…as a dog… in a movie full of pee-pee poo-poo jokes… and does not have him deliver the line “what? poop is funny.” If Look Who’s Talking Now was the origin of that iconic bit of comedy gold it would have opened up a brand new meme on the internet I’m sure of it.

Sadly the movie failed even delivering that possible little historical comedy nugget for Jon’s entertainment. Instead it featured a baby dunking on Charles Barkley.

‘Tis the season for horror movies and it seems like Jon and Scott barely understood the assignment. Jon may have started Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinnochio” but then bailed when it was too dark and scary for his baby.

How is the baby going to get through “Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom” if you’re pulling the plug on Pinnochio? Parents these days.

Meanwhile, Keith watched Marvel’s Werewolf by Night (in black and white because why would you want to watch it in colour) and it was… fine. Those are the kind of hot takes you can come up with when you’re getting close to 300 episodes of pop-culture podcasting.

Meanwhile over on Garbage Time… listen, my show notes on the bonus episode are pretty shoddy this time around, I know we talk about Sextile and The BCASA and I remember that Scott ragged on Drew Barrymore a little, but this episode is almost 40 minutes long and I’m not sure those are the only things we talk about. We probably talk about comic books or television shows because what else do we talk about on these things? Enjoy!. If that sounds cool then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

  • Mainline Rocky Horror (Kenny Streule & Cat Preston) – GPYS 286

The Montreal podcast that asks Cat Preston and Kenny Streule (from Mainline Presents Richard O’Briens The Rocky Horror Show): “What’s the worst you’ve ever had to hold it? How did it end?” That thought provoking question provided by Andrina Learmonth back in episode 285.

We’ve had various stars of various versions of Rocky Horror on the show over the years which is a true testament to the staying power of what is openly one of the most bizarre little slices of pop-culture that there is.

As we talk about in the show, if you pitched Rocky Horror to almost anyone you would probably be laughed out of whatever room you were in. It sounds like an overly ambitious fever dream that would be lucky to find even the smallest of cult audiences. And yet, 50 years after it debuted on stage The Rocky Horror show is still delighting audiences with both its film and stage versions.

So much so that even with an incredible 8 dates – the Mainline production of Rocky Horror is very nearly sold out already! As Kenny says in the episode though there is a small chance that more tickets might be made available. Your best bet is probably to stay tuned to Mainline’s Facebook and the social media platform formerly known as Twitter if you want to get the jump on any last minute ticket availabilities!

In the meantime, enjoy the episode as you shiver in antici…

    PATION!

Some of the books, performers and podcasts that we talk about in this episode include:

    • Ducks by Kate Beaton
    • Yes Please by Amy Poehler
For the Love of Men by Liz Plank
    • The All My Relations Podcast – Decolonizing Sex Episode
    • Daphne Rubin-Vega is the Magenta performance that really inspired Cat.

    • 9ES295: D&D AIN’T

We talk a lot about institutions in this episode of 9ES. Dungeons & Dragons and Wu-Tang Clan are definitely institutions of their established mediums. But where the Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthin’ to Fuck Wit – perhaps it is time that we start fucking with D&D.

You have no idea how proud I am of writing that intro.

Dungeons & Dragons does seem to exist in a weird intersection of conflicting demands from the players. On the one hand it has over 40 years of hardcore players that demand that each edition is “just so” full of monsters, spells and abilities that they are familiar with and this multi-layered system that is a hodge-podge mess of four decades of rubber bands and glue holding a “game system” together. They never really get to start fresh since they are somehow obligated to transfer over whole chunks of each previous iteration.

On the other hand, it’s the most mainstream RPG there is. It’s basically synonymous with the term “role playing game” and if there is someone out there who is just interested in playing their first RPG they will almost certainly pick up a D&D book to do so.

They’re trying please people who are diehard fans of the hobby for decades and people that just picked up their first player’s handbook because the kids in Stranger Things looked like they were having fun at the same time.

      Impossible.

I guess the good news is that they have a pretty decent history of listening to player feedback (possibly to their detriment). So if you care about this as much as we do maybe head over to dndbeyond and start telling them their new stuff sucks.

Tell them to be more like Wu Tang Clan. For the children.

Over on Garbage Time Scott and I talk a little bit about (what else) Marvel Snap (Scott hit Infinite everyone!) before we talk about some movies we’ve been watching recently. The 90s are alive in Garbage Time as we talk about Army of Darkness and Deep Rising. Keith also watched Shudder Exclusive “Who Invited Them?” and that was cool too. • Go Plug Yourself Back to School Special 2023

Montreal is a college town so this is a college episode!

      No it’s not.

What was supposed to happen was we would be joined be our host in absentia Inés Anaya and we were going to catch up with her and it was going to be a grand old time. But then the Toronto subway system spoiled our plans. Honestly apparently she didn’t get home until over an hour and a half later than she anticipated. Another win for Montreal I guess.

So instead it’s just Chris Venditto and I talking about all manner of pop culture and current events. Chris says these are his favorite episodes. Why do I even bother booking guests when this whole show could just be Chris and I talking about Taylor Swift and how terrible many, many professional athletes are? That’s the show now guys!

      I kid, I kid (or do I?).

Who’s going to cheer the currently unnamed Montreal women’s hockey team with me in January?

Anyhow, enjoy the show, we’ll be back with a guest in 2 weeks family.

    • 9ES294: Brad Bramish Is IN

Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is one of those rare shows that actually assumes its audience has grown up with the show. It assumes that if you were like 9 or 10 when Adventure Time started, you’re now a person in your 20s. So Fionna and Cake treats you like an adult. Not in a “now we can cuss and show violence” kind of way (although there is more graphic violence than in the original run) – but more in a “let’s deal with some complex issues like depression, anxiety and misplaced guilt while still somehow (mostly) taking place in the Candy Kingdom.

If you ask me, that’s dope.

For those of you know us personally you know that 9ES is basically an extension of the endless hours Jon, Scott and Keith spent either at a bar or at the Dawson Sci-Fi club just shooting the shit about comics, movies and whatever else we happened to be into at a given moment.

The first half of this episode really taps into that vibe in a way that the show doesn’t always manage to perfectly capture. It’s just the three of us taking a meandering talk about somewhat obscure comic book characters who have spun off into somewhat obscure television shows.

If you had to take a wild guess what we would talk about in this week’s episode I would challenge any of you to say: “They’re going to talk an awful lot about Shadow King.”

      I challenge all of you.

Unrelated but we really need to figure out who is next up to watch a really bad movie – if only to make Jon watch The Eternals.

Over on Garbage Time Scott and I talk a little bit about (what else) Marvel Snap before Jon shows back up. We also get into the origin of the phrase “You’re Toast” before we spend a good chunk of time talking about Indiana Jones.
