Sometimes even the best laid plans don’t come to fruition.
Our plan this week was to reunite my cohosts Inés Anaya, Chris Venditto and Lawrence Corber so that we could have a roundtable catchup discussion and come up with a few new questions for our “5 Questions” segment. The plan even involved Lawrence taking the train from Missassauga into Toronto (armed with a USB microphone that I lent him over the weekend) to go to Inés’ house for better sound quality. It was a perfect plan spanning two provinces.
Alas – it was not meant to be. Due to a vetrinary medical emergency we had to scramble for a backup plan. Lawrence could only record from his phone (which is why he sounds like he is recording from a phone) and we were missing a co-host. So we did what we always do: talk about wrestling.
A lot has happened in wrestling over the last few weeks (do not look up why Vince McMahon is a bad man and just trust me that he is) but we decide to focus on actual in-ring discussions. If you want our hot-takes on the Vince McMahon allegations we will set up a very expense Patreon paywall because we don’t want to talk about it (but obviously will if you pay us a bunch of money, let’s not kid ourselves).
As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude!
Chris Venditto is another funny person in Montreal who you can see all over the place and if you don’t want to miss him take the stage you should follow him on all the socials. He’s @chrisvenditto on Twitter and Instagram so you should follow him on those two things. He also produces shows with the guys at Perfect Bite Productions who you should also follow on Instagram and on Facebook.
Keith does all sorts of things here on 9to5.cc, he works with the other founders on 9to5 (illustrated), co-hosts our two podcasts: The 9to5 Entertainment System and Go Plug Yourself and sometimes blogs here as The Perspicacious Geek.
Lawrence Corber also produces some shows you may have heard of (you should probably check out the next Healthy Living show when you get a chance) and if you’re close with him you can call him Lully. The other way to call him “Lully” is to follow him on his socials. @Lully514 on Instagram.

I wonder if 25 years from now we will look upon Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon with fresh eyes and realize that it is in fact a great sci-fi satire the likes of Starship Troopers?
I doubt it.
But for real, Roger Ebert gave ‘Troopers 2 stars back in the 1997. What’s interesting is that his opening paragraph might as well be talking about Rebel Moon:
“Starship Troopers” is the most violent kiddie movie ever made. I call it a kiddie movie not to be insulting, but to be accurate: Its action, characters and values are pitched at 11-year-old science-fiction fans.
You can (and should) say the same thing about Rebel Moon.
I’m a lot more interested in seeing Poor Things from Yorgos Lanthimos. Put a baby’s brain into a woman’s body and run around an absurdist rendering of old timey Europe? Sign me up baby.
Meanwhile – and obviously this doesn’t have to be said (but I’ll say it anyways): Queen fucking rocks. I get that they were so big and bold that to look back on them is almost like looking at a parody band like Spinal Tap or something but hot damn those guys could go. To watch them in their 1981 heyday on a giant IMAX screen with a crazy sound system was a treat.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time – we talk a lot about boardgames and also the game of hockey. Professional women’s hockey. Keith got season tickets for the Montreal PWHL team and he took Scott to a game. It’s fun! We also run down some of the board games we’ve been playing like Scout, Psycho Killer, The Grizzled and Frosthaven. Also Scrabble. Scott almost lost to his kid. Enjoy the show! The Montreal podcast that asks comedian Dan Kestler-D’Amours: “How did you get into what you’re doing?” That question asked in episode 290 by Rob from Montreal Pinball Arcade.
So every now and then my co-host Chris Venditto likes to sneak a full on sports episode into the rotation. This is not quite that, but it’s close. Yes Dan Kestler-D’Amours is a talented Montreal comedian but, to quote Chris: “This guy has some great football takes.”
So this is serving as much as a Superbowl preview episode as it is a regular episode of Go Plug Yourself. Deal with it. Dan and Chris also go through the remaining NFL Playoff matchups and give their picks to win it all at the Superbowl so if you’re a gambling person maybe this is also a sports betting podcast now? I hear there’s money in that. Someone get BETMGM on the phone it’s time to monetize this biz.
You can find Dan Kestler-D’Amours on Instagram and X where he’s DanKestlerESQ and on Facebook as well.

You may have noticed that this episode is not a retrospective on 2023. Do you know why? Because Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon demanded our attention. Nay, Rebel Moon commanded our attention.
Honestly though, we’re all in our 40s now. After 300 episodes aren’t we past the point of devoting entire episodes to looking back at a year? Aren’t they all the same? Doesn’t one day just bleed into the next like the harvests on the backwater moon of Veldt, the farm moon where Kora sought refuge from the Imperium in Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon?
Don’t you just feel like you may as well just be a robot soldier and you’re just one bad day away from putting antlers on your head and saying fuck it to the whole world? Just like Jimmy from Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon?
Anyways, who would have thought that there would be honest to goodness news about Tetris in 2024? That it was a 13 year old who hit the first NES kill screen is just somehow even better.
Meanwhile, Scott finally finished watching “Murder at the End of the World” and we finally get to talk about how unsatisfying the ending was. Neat!
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time – Keith “binged” all of Season 3 of True Detective and also blasted through “Avengers: Arena” so we talk about those. That leads to an examination of the works of Jonathan Hickman and whether or not he’s the kind of writer who should be given the keys to the Marvel Universe. Enjoy the show! It’s time for the greatest tradition in Montreal podcasting! The annual Go Plug Yourself Shit Show!
Somehow this is the 9th annual version of this little Shit Show tradition we’ve got going on (we only started this somehow around episode 75 if the Go Plug Yourself historians are to be believed) and boy does it feel like even more than that.
This year we play host to: Tyler Lemco, Walter Lyng, Vance Michel and Troy Stark, with Sarah and I representing the actual “host” contingent of the podcast. If you listen to this whole episode you’ll hear that Walter is considering a comeback (did he ever really leave?) somewhere around episode 300. You may recall that he semi-retired from co-hosting at episode 200 way back in 2020. Stay tuned to see if he’s a man of his word.
You know the drill with these things by now. There’s no real theme. I don’t even really remember what we spoke about. I’m pretty sure at some point we are talking about fake asses though, so look forward to that.
It’s that special episode once a year where it sounds like you’re a mute at a party so sit back, relax and enjoy the show! Go Plug Yourself everyone! We’ll be back with a guest (or not) in two weeks!
Happy New Year!

Well everyone, we are closing out the year with our 300th episode. It’s time to radically re-brand and make this show the Steamboat Willie Entertainment System. From now on this show (as of January 1st 2024) this show will completely devoted to our fanfics about Steamboat Willie. Steamboat Willie will be getting up to all kinds of no-good in these fanfics. He’ll be having sex, doing drugs and just absolutely living his life balls to the wall. We can’t wait for this exciting new era of podcasting.
Steamboat Willie.
The internet is ablaze with reviews and opinions about Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon and I promise you that at least one of us will have watched this trashpile by the time next episode rolls around. It will be a bold move by Snyder to add Steamboat Willie into the franchise movie forward but I’m excited to see where it all goes. I promise one of us will have watched it by the time next episode rolls around – not sure if 301 will be a 2023 year-in-review or not yet.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time Jon takes off so it’s left to Scott and I to hold down the garbage truck. We talk about the mess Jonathan Majors made and how Robert Downey Jr. just might be able to fix it, Scott watched Reacher, I’ve been playing a lot of Mortal Kombat 11 and it’s bonkers. We also talk about the Marvel Star Wars comics which are quite good and Batman and The Flash: The Button which is quite bad. I’m pretty sure we talk a little about Marvel Snap.Enjoy the show! The Montreal podcast that asks Rob from the Montreal Pinball Arcade: “What is the moment that scared you the most? – That question asked by none other than Serag Meletian back in episode 289.
I’ve always been fascinated by pinball. The fact that there is a game where you have to use a pair (or more) of flippers to keep a little silver ball in play while trying your best to hit targets is pretty cool. The fact that that basic principle has been explored in hundreds of different interations over the last 5 or 6 decades is absolutely insane. Blinking lights, music and killer artwork makes each pinball machine it’s own thing, but the name of the game is mostly the same. The last ten years or so has been somewhat of a resurgance for the art of pinball and thank goodness for guys like Rob from Montreal Pinball Arcade because he’s getting more and more classic machines up and running again.
Rob is one part arcade owner (visit him Friday nights or Sunday afternoons for $15 free play) and one part pinball mechanic (check out Pinball Medics for parts, full machines and repairs) and he’s turned a passion for pinball into his full time job. Once a car mechanic, Rob has taken his mechanical and electrical know-how and applied it to the fine art of restoring and maintaning pinball machines. Getting machines from the 80s and 90s back into working condition and better and faster than ever.
Sarah steps in as co-host for this episode as we talk about old school arcades, working on pinball machines a little bit of heavy metal music. Be sure to visit Montreal Pinball Arcade in NDG at 923 Girouard for $15 free play on Friday nights and Sunday aftternoons.
Enjoy the show!

The movie “Totally Killer” is about a teenager who goes back in time to the 80s to find herself going toe-to-toe with a serial killer right out of an 80s slasher film. Henry Kissinger was “Totally Killer” because he his decision making resulted in the death of millions. From Rolling Stone article that Jon mentions in the episode:
The Yale University historian Greg Grandin, author of the biography Kissinger’s Shadow, estimates that Kissinger’s actions from 1969 through 1976, a period of eight brief years when Kissinger made Richard Nixon’s and then Gerald Ford’s foreign policy as national security adviser and secretary of state, meant the end of between three and four million people. That includes “crimes of commission,” he explained, as in Cambodia and Chile, and omission, like greenlighting Indonesia’s bloodshed in East Timor; Pakistan’s bloodshed in Bangladesh; and the inauguration of an American tradition of using and then abandoning the Kurds.
Don’t worry though, we also talk about modding trading cards and playing Warhammer – we’re still that kind of podcast.
Also – looking to crowdsource this question: What movies used their advertising to misdirect the audience? Let us know.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time! We talk about what might be coming up in Episode 300 (spoilers: it might be nothing special at all – or will it?) and how “One Piece” is one of the most profitable and long running franchises in history. We also (of course) talk about Batman. You thought I was going to say Marvel Snap didn’t you? Enjoy the show! The Montreal arts and entertainment podcast that asks comedian Serag Meletian: What is the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you? That question asked by our guest Éloïse Marseille back in episode 289.
Incredibly it has been exactly one year since we’ve had Serag Meletian on the show to the day and it’s a testament to the greatness of this show that we get to have guys like him as pretty much recurring guests (stay tuned for the first week of December 2024 when we will have him back on the show). He’s one of Montreal’s most talented comedians regardless of whether or not he’s working face or heel.
We talk about wrestling, being a wrestling fan, embarrassing stories and comic books. You can hear Venditto’s eyes glass over when we get into the comic book talk but I don’t care man it’s the best. If you want to get to know Serag better as a person, this is the podcast you’ve been waiting for. If you haven’t, why don’t you want to know more about Serag Meletian as a person? What’s wrong with you?
