  • (Unofficial) Osheaga Podcast: Patrick Guay (GPYS 281)

    15 days until Osheaga 2023!

We’re super excited to present this episode as we were lucky enough to sit down with the Senior talent buyer from Osheaga: Patrick Guay!

This is an extra long episode since Patrick was gracious enough to come over to our house for the episode and we may or may not have opened several bottles of wines over the course of recording. Patrick talks about getting into the business, some of his favorite shows in history and what makes booking Osheaga so different from many other festivals out.

If you want the full experience I really recommend opening up a bottle of wine, pouring yourself a glass and just sitting back and really just soaking it all in. Or go for a two hour run. One or the other.

Note: I actually cut a good chunk of this episode out where we were talking about the Gathering of the Juggalos, so you can thank me later for that one.

Osheaga runs from August 4th to 6th at Parc Jean Drapeau, music starts at 14h each day. Check out osheaga.com for more info and tickets.

All audio clips are copyright of their respective owners and used solely with the intention of promoting Osheaga.

  • Alan Davies – JFL MTL 2023 (Go Plug Yourself)

Alan Davies joins Inés Anaya and I to talk about why he doesn’t tour as much as he used to, not having been to Montreal since 1995 and how important British panel shows are to making comedians household names across the pond.

It’s crazy to think that this will be the first time Alan Davies takes to a Just for Laughs stage in nearly 3 decades but there it is. You owe it to yourself to check out Alan and a myriad of other talent visiting our lovely city.

    Details on Alan’s Shows:

Back for another year at Just For Laughs MONTRÉAL, Brit(ish) boasts a lineup of some of the funniest comedians from across the pond. Hosted by Jen Brister, featuring Alan Davies, Gina Yashere, Josie Long, Jamali Maddix and Reuben Kaye.

  • Whoopsie – No 9ES This Week

It’s full on summer vibes and between injuries, vacations and epic rock concerts our window to record this week’s 9ES slammed shut without us ever actually doing a new episode. Whoopsie!

We’ll be back in 2 weeks!

Enjoy this photo of Sarah and I about 20 feet from the Foo Fighters.

  • Osheaga Podcast 2023 (Unofficial) – Sunday Part 1

    26 days until Osheaga 2023!

As always,  to get ourselves (and you!) hyped up for one of our favorite weekends of the year Sarah and I do what we do every year: listen to the whole dang lineup and make an impossible to follow schedule for all 3 days by falling in love with a dozen artists each day! This episode we are finally taking a look at Day 3 Sunday’s lineup to choose some of our favorite non-headline acts.

I can’t believe it’s already July and Osheaga is really starting to feel like its just around the corner.

    Our picks for this episode:

    • Milk & Bone – “Object of Fun”
    • Monolink “The Silence”
    • Hollow Coves – “Purple”
    • Cigarettes After Sex – “Pistol”
    • FOALS – “2 AM”
    • Sunday can seem to be top-heavy at first glance. With Kendrick Lamar, Fred Again.. and Rezz closing out the festivities – but the full lineup is also great and makes me wonder just how much time I’m going to need to recover from Osheaga weekend. Oh, also, if you haven’t had the chance you should really check out the local artists that have been added to the Backyard Sessions stage. Looks like a great little sample of some of the amazing home-grown music coming out of Montreal.

Osheaga runs from August 4th to 6th at Parc Jean Drapeau, music starts at 14h each day. Check out osheaga.com for more info and tickets.

    • Forget the Box (Andrew Jamieson & Dawn McSweeney) – GPYS 280

The Montreal podcast that asks Andrew Jamieson & Dawn McSweeney of Forget The Box: What is the weirdest porn you’ve gotten off to? That question asked by Vinny Terzo (Horns & Hoofs) back in episode 279 (sorry dad).

If you’ve been following the arts and entertainment “underground” scene of Montreal over the course of the last 15-20 years the name ‘Forget the Box’ almost certainly rings a bell at the very least. Maybe you’re intimately familiar or maybe you’ve just heard the name in passing.

Forget the Box was a mainstay blog of the scene – covering the likes of theater, music, comedy and more. Unfortunately certain blogs that I have no problem calling out like MTLBlog squashed a lot of great local content by carpet bombing social media with their bullshit and Forget the Box was very nearly a casualty.

But then Andrew Jamieson stepped in with the defibrillator and resuscitated Forget the Box and it’s back baby! It’s new home is ForgetTheBox.ca and Dawn and Andrew are hellbent on making it an important part of the Montreal arts scene once again. We talk about how they’re doing thing differently, the type of journalism you can expect at Forget the Box, movies, music and a bunch of other stuff I’m forgetting. It’s that free wheeling Go Plug Yourself magic.

Sit back and enjoy the show!

    • 9ES 289 – You A Whole Billionaire

I still maintain that my favorite part of the whole Titan submersible disaster was when Cardi B had a hot take about one of the billionaires’ stepson going to a Blink-182 concert.

Read that sentence again. Soak it in. Bask in it.

I think we say everything that needs to be said about this news event and we can all pretty much move on. Before recording this episode I (Keith) said “yeah, but billionaires aren’t people.” I didn’t mean that they were not human beings or anything, but that nothing in their lives is like our own. They might as well be aliens.

I saw a thing the other day that really drove home just how much a billion was and why being a billionaire is just fundamentally different from a millionaire. It used seconds.

      1 million seconds = 11.6 days

      1 billion seconds = 31.7 years

That’s a huge difference. Connor McDavid signed a $100,000,000 dollar contract, one of the highest payouts in NHL history. Even at 100 million dollars, if he started spending a dollar a second he would still run out of money in 3 years.

A billion dollars is so much fucking money.

Is it enough money to start a coup in Russia? You know, it just might be. Meanwhile, I’m very happy that apparently that Flash movie isn’t very good. I now don’t want to see it and that’s a nice feeling.

Meanwhile over on Garbage Time Scott continues his crusade against Mario. Scott is a true follower of the yellow electric rat. You know, I knew a girl in high-school that repeatedly said she wanted to “learn the Pikachu language”. What a strange aspiration. If that sounds coo  then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

    • Vinny Terzo (Horns & Hoofs) – GPYS 279

The Montreal podcast that asks Vinny Terzo, Artist Manager at Horns & Hoofs Entertainment: How do you measure success? That question was asked by the mad man who built a truck for a demolition derby Sergio da Silva back in episode 278.

I met Vinny Terzo somewhere on a dank and sweaty dancefloor in the early 2000s back when I was still frequenting the Montreal rave scene. As we discuss in the show we’re talking real underground raves with hastily set up sound systems in condemned buildings. Not those fancy-pants raves at the Palais de Congrés. Where was I?

Back then he was known as “DJ Clown” or mononymously as just “Clown” and every year he threw one of the marquee events of on the Montreal rave calendar. The Re:Wire raves. I think I’m getting that punctuation right.

Anyways, like any reasonable person he retired from that scene and bought a house and started a family, but now that he’s a little older he’s gotten back into music and his love for psy-trance psy-tech has dragged him back to the turntables. Currently serving as the Artist Manager for Horns & Hoofs Entertainment (an offshoot of Boshke Beats Records) Vinny has started playing some festivals again.

Festivals like the Groove & Bass Renegade Festival/Fundraiser that is happening Canada Day Weekend in Bryson, Quebec. According to Wikipedia Bryson has a population of about 700 people.

Chris Venditto gets called off the bench to co-host this episode and wouldn’t you just know it: Vinny also loves golf. So there’s some golf talk in here too.

      Enjoy the show!

As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude!

Chris Venditto is another funny person in Montreal who you can see all over the place and if you don’t want to miss him take the stage you should follow him on all the socials. He’s @chrisvenditto on Twitter and Instagram so you should follow him on those two things. He also produces shows with the guys at Perfect Bite Productions who you should also follow on Instagram and on Facebook.

    • Osheaga Podcast 2023 (Unofficial) – Saturday Part 2

It’s here! It’s finally here! Not Osheaga. Not yet anyways. But warm weather! Warm weather is here and I’m wearing a sleeveless shirt while I type this up!

To get ourselves (and you!) hyped up for one of our favorite weekends of the year Sarah and I do what we do every year: listen to the whole dang lineup and make an impossible to follow schedule for all 3 days by falling in love with a dozen artists each day! This episode we take a look once again at Saturday’s lineup and choose some of our favorite non-headline acts.

      Our picks for this episode:

      • LIDO PIMIENTA – “TE QUERÍA”
      • PUP – How To Live With Yourself
      • Adekunle Gold – Do You Mind?
      • Major Lazer & Major League DJz – Ke Shy (Feat. Tyla, LuuDaDeejay & Yumbs)
      • Bomba Estéreo, Kevin Florez, The Busy Twist – Romántica Champeta
      • I think I mentioned last episode that Saturday is quickly shaping up to be my most anticipated day of the festival. There is a definite summer vibe and there so many multicultural artists that are normally outside of my wheelhouse. I’m hyped. Hyped I say. Oh, also, if you haven’t had the chance you should really check out the local artists that have been added to the Backyard Sessions stage. Looks like a great little sample of some of the amazing home-grown music coming out of Montreal.
