  • 9ES285: Individuality Emerging

Picard Season 3 apparently doesn’t suck – I don’t know why but out of all the nostalgia that is being thrown at me these days “Picard” just doesn’t seem to cut it. Maybe I like the fact that Star Trek just kind of lives in my childhood and I don’t need to revisit it all the time?

Maybe I just feel badly burned by Star Wars.

We talk a little bit in this episode about how droids get their designations in Star Wars but now it’s got me thinking that at least they decide to give their automatons any kind of a unique name. In Star Trek they just call every computer “Computer.” But I guess that’s on the Star Trek computers themselves for never developing much of a personality.

Anyhow – I’m about to blow your mind. There’s a good chance that ‘R2-D2” is actually a short version of Artoo’s full designation. Basically “D2” are probably the first two letters of a much longer designation. This isn’t even strictly a fan theory. In the Clone Wars series there’s a droid named “AZ-3” and it’s revealed that name is actually a shortened version of its full designation AZ-345211896246498721347.

    Neat.

Finally – you should really check out the TikTok videos we talk about regarding Toronto real-estate. You can seriously buy a castle for the price of a shit-hole in Toronto. A castle with a broadband internet connection and a movie theater.

Meanwhile over on Garbage Time we talk about the rogue-like card game “Inscryption” and then wax philosophical about what  makes a comedian funny. If that sounds like your cup of tea (since you live in a castle now) –  then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

  • Les Voyeurs de Vues (Yannick Belzil & Alex Rose) – GPYS 276

Montreal podcast Go Plug Yourself asks Yannick Belzil and Alex Rose (of the “Les Voyeurs de Vues” podcast) not one, but two burning questions: Where do you go from here? AND Who is the most fuckable on Lost? Asked by Andy Belanger “The Animal” (creator of Mother Trucker).

Yannick and Alex are co-hosts of a podcast called “Voyeurs de Vues“. As I understand it they are in a never-ending chain of films linked by actors who appeared in one film to the next. Listen. They explain it better than I can on the episode that you are about to listen to.

Yannick Belzile is a graphic artist who’s work you might recognize from Tribute Games’ TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, a self-described “cartooniste robuste” he co-hosted the 3 Bieres Podcast for an astonishing 10 years before the show wrapped up last September. More proof that this podcast will be the last podcast on Earth.

Alex Rose used to talk about movies for Cult MTL until he couldn’t but now he can again – but as a freelancer.

Anyways, Chris Venditto jumps on as my co-host on this one and we talk about movies, Ninja Turtles and so much more.

  • 9ES284: Give Us More Krang

I cannot stress this enough: watch John Wick 4. It is unparalleled as an action film.

So, peeling back the curtain a little bit, let me tell you that I (Keith) normally write these blurbs and then Jono posts them.

However, this week Jon sent me a blurb about the LCS Spring playoffs and I thought I would share:

“Who caught LCS finals this weekend?

GG smashed FlyQuest in a hilariously unsurprising upset. I feel so bad for those guys, how do you feel good when you lose to momentum and nothing else?
Sure GG was a bunch of semi-washed out vets on the miracle run you knew had to face the music but they did take a match off of C9 in the grand finals and that’s better than anyone expected from them.
They gave Fudge the MVP for the series. Ok, he beat Kennen as Renekton and had the 4 man Malphite ult, sure. Consider: EMENES the only mid with the balls to field assassin types (Leb and Akali in the finals!), but also C9 won the 3 games EMENES won lane and lost the game he lost whereas (until the Olaf game) Fudge mostly went even but then had a flashy play or three.
it actually feels like C9 has the talent to perform at MSI this year (not like GG or FlyQuest who will embarrass NA again) but I’ve been disappointed by NA teams at MSI so many times before I’m completely numb to any hype.”razy amount of drama this season and tons of great matches; it’s a shame League is so niche the quality of the product is at a peak as viewership declines.”

If that sounds cool to you – then boy the last 15-20 minutes of this podcast will get your motor running.

We also talk about D&D Honor Among Thieves and Scott watched that new Ant-Man movie about ants.

Also, totally unrelated to this podcast, here is something I can’t stop thinking about:

So this is fascinating – basically a shitty mobile game has run a series of over 300 ads that seem to build the lore and reference an *entirely different game* that doesn’t exist.

These weird creepy ads for Evertale have popped up all over my feed and I had already heard that they in fact had nothing to do with the actual game but I had no idea how far the rabbit hole went.

Meanwhile over on Garbage Time we talk about hockey and baseball because we are real sports boys. If you love sports (sports!) then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

  • Go Plug Yourself – Ice Storm 2023

Ice Storm 2023 means that your favorite Montreal arts and entertainment podcast that doesn’t have a guest this week! Nobody had power last week and we’re all kind of recovering!

So yeah – instead of a regular episode featuring a guest this episode features the wonderful Chris Venditto and myself just hanging out and shooting the shit like those kids on That 70’s Show.

I keep hearing people call it “Ice Storm 2023” and this is the first time where I found myself thinking “are we far enough along into the century that we can stop saying ’20’ in front of the year?” Could we just say “Ice Storm ’23” now?

    Maybe it is time.

Chris and I also dig into Wrestlemania 39 (which we also talked about in 9ES if you’re keeping score) but we spend a little more time talking about the merger with UFC and where the booking might go from here.

Finally, this past weekend saw the inaugural edition of Gigglefest which found itself more Downtown than in the Sud-Ouest due to the aforementioned Ice Storm 2023. And would you believe another local comedy fest is around the corner? The NDG Comedy Fest is coming up fast and they need your help! The beautiful Oscar Peterson Concert Hall is booked for none other than Bowser and Blue with Joey Elias and our sweet boy Walter needs some help securing some funding. If you’ve got the cash to spare check out his GoFundMe and let’s make this happen.

  • 9ES283: We Killed Auril

I apologize in advance for how conceited this next bit will sound.

If there was a late-night college radio show that existed in the 90s when I was in high-school (and before podcasts existed) where the hosts just shot the shit and talked about comic books, video games and obscure shit from the 80s it would be my favorite thing.

Now I get to make my favorite thing. But you get the pleasure of listening to it.

    You’re so lucky.

[I think our listeners are used to this by now.  -Jon]

It’s crazy to me that “Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light” has crept up into my mindspace multiple times in the span of only a few weeks. The show only has 13 episodes and was aired entirely between September 20 and December 13. 1987. What a world we live in that this strange little cartoon from over 35 years ago can so easily be consumed any time we want it. I guess the only question that remains is this: When will we set aside 5 hours to marathon the whole thing?

Listen up, Jon has been working at his real 9to5 a lot lately and he’s barely had any time off in weeks so guess what? There’s still plenty of time to let us know what movies you want to see get re-ranked on The List so please let us know your picks using this handy little survey. Since we’re too cheap to buy the premium survey features we are making due with what we’ve got so that means you have to pick at least 1 movie from each question, and at most 5 from each. So you need to pick 2 to 10 movies we should consider re-ranking. Use the comment boxes to explain yourself.

If this survey is too clunky for you, just find Scott and message him your picks.

Meanwhile over on Garbage Time we talk about the Marvel Snap card Shanna that Scott currently has pinned and then things get real upsetting as we talk about actual alleged Hollywood monsters named Ezra Miller and Jonathan Majors.

If all that sounds like the best (or actually, kind of the worst),then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

    • Andy Belanger aka Bob “The Animal” Anger – GPYS 275

The Montreal arts and entertainment podcast that asks freelance comic book creator (and pro-wrestler) Andy Belanger: “What is your favorite childhood book?” – asked by comedian Elie Gill back in episode 274.

“I want to be a comic book creator by day and a pro-wrestler by night” sounds like the kind of thing you would say to a high-school councilor right before they yelled at you like the Teacher in Another Brick in the Wall Part 2.  But that’s exactly the life that Andy Belanger leads.

As one of the co-creators of Lethal Comics Andy Belanger brings independent comics (like his own Mother Trucker) directly into your hands thanks largely in part to the power of Kickstarter *cough cough* get notified when Mother Trucker 3 campaign goes live right now *cough cough*. As a pro-wrestler Andy becomes Bob “The Animal” Anger and wrestles at indie wrestling events all over Montreal. Perhaps most notably as one half of the tag-team “SeXXXy Beasts” over at IWS.

Because this is a wrestling episode Walter invoked the clause in his GPYS Legends Contract to jump on as co-host and we recorded this one live (to tape) at the back of Grumpy’s on Montreal’s historic Bishop Street.

Listen now- support Andy wherever you can and keep tabs on him like a superfan on Instagram.

    • 9ES282: Let’s All Go To The Lobby

The Montreal podcast that breaks down every Montreal location in Scream 6 that they are pretending is New York City is back for episode 282!

As you may have seen on this very website, Scream 6 was filmed mainly in Montreal. It is so clearly (to a local) Montreal that it almost seems preposterous to imagine it is taking place anywhere else.

The characters of Scream 6 continually draw attention to the fact that they are living and breathing and stabbing and dying in New York City but it is a Montreal movie in my heart.

On another topic: Who would have thought that we would be applauding Robert Smith like a hero in 2023? Seriously the man is on a one man mission to call Ticketmaster out for their bullshit. He tweets about it every day.

We really need to set a date for when we do the list re-rank but until then let me assure you: there’s still plenty of time to let us know what movies you want to see get re-ranked on The List so please let us know your picks using this handy little survey. • GPYS 274 – Elie Gill

The Montreal podcast that asks comedian Elie Gill: What is your ideal sandwich? That question asked back in episode 273 by the hot dog loving Amanda McQueen (we also ask the insane secondary question: What tattoo would you let Keith give you?)

Elie Gill is a Montreal comedian and independent journalist who just got back from London to do this show.

That’s right, we flew her in from London just so she could come to the back of Grumpy’s and record this podcast.

Listen, this episode gets pretty deep into cultural politics, the rise of right-wing Nationalism and how maybe narrow-minded assholes are ruining the whole world for the rest of us.

But we also talk about sandwiches!

Perhaps most importantly, she is producing her first show “The Empress Comedy Show” as part of the inaugural Gigglefest Montreal. The show will feature an All-Asian, all-star lineup of talented women: Yumi Blake, Andrina Learmonth, Diana Reyes, Joanna Selvarajah, Mariam Khan and Kayla de Leon. Elie Gill will be hosting the whole thing April 8th at Lord William Pub at 8 pm. Get your tickets now you so and so.

Oh! You can also catch Elie Gill next Thursday (March 23rd) at Rustik Comedy (hosted by our friends Mike Carrozza and Walter J. Lyng) at Rustik in NDG.

        Listen to this show!

      • 9ES281: Plastic Bag Plastic Bag

The Montreal podcast that provides hot takes on HBO’s Last of Us, Ron DeSantis and Terrifier 2 all in one place is back!

I think the hottest take is when Keith posits that Aliens might actually be a zombie movie. It’s not a great take but it is certainly hot and spicy.

I think we can summarize our take on Ron DeSantis as “wut.” From the outside looking in you can’t help but wonder how can the guy who is running Florida might end up running the country?

        It’s Florida.

        Where Florida Man is from.

        • Amanda McQueen – GPYS 273

The Montreal podcast that asks comedian Amanda McQueen: “What’s the most interesting place you’ve had sex?” – asked by our last guest Pat Hickey back in episode 272.

If you’ve never had the chance to hear Amanda McQueen perform standup then you’ve just run out of excuses. That’s right, Amanda has released a brand new comedy album called “A Hot Dog in Every Pocket” and it’s available literally everywhere.

You might notice that the energy levels of this episode are maybe a smidge lower than normal – that’s because I had an extremely long day at work and both Inés and Amanda were recovering from binging both seasons of White Lotus. They also got sick. So the whole tone of this episode is very low-key and cozy. It’s kind of the perfect late February episode. I would suggest making yourself a cup of tea and curling up with a blanket before you listen to 3 low-energy people talk about TV shows and walking around with your pants around your ankles.

Seriously though, you can get this album EVERYWHERE – just check out Amanda’s hotdog-tree.
