  • 9ES 280: Thoughts About Tom Sizemore

The Montreal podcast that talks about Nope, Elvis and The Last of Us has a hard time sleeping because they are pretty sure mushrooms are now flying aliens from Graceland returns. Listen now!

Why is this show 3 days late? Here’s what happened: We all ended up at a cabin over the weekend and none of us had our computers. Sorry! (Note: If you subscribe to our Patreon you probably noticed that Garbage Time wasn’t late, what can I say, money talks).

So one of the things that Nope really gets right is that for the most part the characters respond reasonably to messed up situations. I know it’s a horror movie trope that characters in a horror film will make terrible decisions just to make sure they march headlong into whatever terror they should be trying to avoid but hot damn does it make me happy when characters act like normal human beings in a spooky flick.

While I’m thinking of it, Last of Us kind of benefits from that sort of thing too. Stuff is messed up but the characters are doing the best they can and general react like reasonable people.

Even non-horror shows and movies can fall victim to characters suddenly behaving like idiots just so that the plot advances – I’m looking at you late-seasons Game of Thrones.

Meanwhile, if you want to watch a movie that is ultimately about a person not making reasonable decisions (despite it being largely factual) – watch Elvis.

There’s still plenty of time to let us know what movies you want to see get re-ranked on The List so please let us know your picks using this handy little survey. Since we’re too cheap to buy the premium survey features we are making due with what we’ve got so   that means you have to pick at least 1 movie from each question, and at most 5 from each. So you need to pick 2 to 10 movies we should consider re-ranking. Use the comment boxes to explain yourself.

If this survey is too clunky for you, just find Scott and message him your picks.

    • Pat Hickey – GPYS 272

The Montreal podcast that asks legendary Montreal Gazette columnist Pat Hickey: “What is the most memorable commercial you’ve ever seen?” That question asked by the one and only Josh Clarke back in episode 270.

To say that Pat Hickey has had a tremendous career would be an understatement. If you listen carefully to this podcast you might hear my mind explode several times.

Pat Hickey buying a bottle of champagne at Studio 54 after a Yankees game? Mind blown.

Pat Hickey covering Jean Beliveau’s 500th career goal? Mind blown.

The list goes on and on.

If you haven’t heard, Pat Hickey recently announced that he would be retiring voluntarily amidst some cuts at the Montreal Gazette so that some younger writers might hang on to their jobs. Class act through and through.

Chris Venditto steps up as c0-host as this one and is also the man who made this interview happen. Big thanks to Chris for making this happen and of course to Mr. Hickey himself who I’m sure has hours and hours of stories to tell (perhaps in a book that may or may not be written during his upcoming retirement).

      Enjoy the show!

Pat Hickey – pictured here with Montreal Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis – fun fact, by my estimate St. Louis may be the 24th coach that Pat has covered behind the bench of the team. Give or take.

The best Montreal podcast that realized that it was way too snowy and cold to attract a guest is back baby!

But listen up – our host depth chart is so deep that it doesn’t even matter that we don’t have what some would call a “guest” on this episode.

Top Montreal comedians Lawrence Corber and Chris Venditto join my wife and I to talk a lot about snow. Seriously, half this episode is literally about snow and snow removal.

        I wish I was kidding.

Am I going to say that we revolutionize podcasting in this episode? That we take the constructs of a podcast and disintegrate it with our tremendous podcasting expertise, talent and brilliance? No, I won’t say that. But if you could, possibly on social media, while tagging us, that would be greatly appreciated.

We reinvented podcasting tonight. And we did it for you.

      • 9ES278: It’s All Billy

The Montreal podcast that would easily collect an entire deck of cards in Alice in Borderland Season 2 is back with another podcast for your ears.

I’ve always had a soft spot for some deathmatch based fiction. From Running Man to Battle Royale to Death Race 2000 (to name some of my favorites). There is something immediately gripping about watching contestants face off to the death. There’s something even more compelling when the game is not just about killing your opponent but about besting them in some other game of skill or wits but someone’s life is still on the line.

Dark? Sure, but boy will it glue me to the television set.

The collective zeitgeist also apparently agrees, considering the megahit that was Squid Game.

I may be in the minority here, but I prefer the two seasons of Alice in Borderland over Squid Game. Of course Squid Game has a lot more to say about class division and the wealth gap but Alice in Borderland has cool anime style characters being cool. Somehow the challenges of Alice in Borderland (and the fact that there is no clear end game/reward for clearing the games) pulled me in. It’s a lot less bleak in that sense. They’re just stuck in there playing these games.

Speaking of games, how about that Dungeons & Dragons, eh? Boy, Hasbro must be excited that a new trailer for the movie dropped to push down all those news articles about them mucking about with their Open Game License. Hell hath no fury like a bunch of angry nerds scorned.

Let’s quickly go through the list of times a mega-corporation has meddled with something beloved and made it better.

        1) …

        Moving on.

        • Joshua Clarke – GPYS 270

The Montreal arts and culture podcast that asks Montreal Comedian, Vocalist and Freestyle Rap WORLD CHAMPION Joshua Clarke: “If you were a celebrity with a ton of time on your hands what hobby do you adopt?” That question was asked back in episode 268 by Serag Meletian.

It’s been a minute since we had Joshua Clarke on the show, about 5 years worth of minutes in fact.

Walter J. Lyng steps into co-hosting duties for this one (Joshua is after all a member of the Legion of Dads) and we talk all about comedy, the Jazz festival and what’s coming up for him in 2023.

The Montreal podcast that waited until the beginning of 2023 to talk about some 2022 movies is back to bring you hot takes on films that came out last year!

Keith spent part of the holidays crossing movies off his “I should watch this” list which meant that he finally got around to seeing:

            • Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

            • The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

            • The Menu

            • Glass Onion

And so that is more or less what this episode is about. We don’t rank any of these films though. We’ll probably rank Glass Onion next week.

              • GPYS Annual Sh!t Show – 2023

The Montreal podcasting tradition continues in 2023 with the most raucous event in podcasting: The Go Plug Yourself Shit Show!

Every year we get way too many people together and record a podcast.

Is 10 too many people for a podcast? Yes it definitely is.

It’s like a party where you’re not allowed to talk!

This year’s Shit Show features *deep breath*: Chris Venditto, Walter Lyng, Serag Meletian, Vance Michel, Tyler Lemco, Alex Lancaster, Kayla De Leon, Lawrence Corber, Phil Donald and myself!

Get into it! The only thing missing from this year’s episode? Inés Anaya. But we got her best friend Kayla De Leon! Take that Inés!

              • 9ES 276 – 2022 in Review

The best geek and pop culture podcast in Montreal takes a look back at the year that was 2022. It’s 2022 in Review!

We talk all about the movies, music, television shows, video games and comics that we’ve consumed this year like hungry, hungry nerd hippos.

Apparently having a very young human to take care of really slowed down Jono’s consumption of crap this year, but I guess he also read a lot of that blog about airplane crashes so who can blame him? Scott actually got to see some new movies this year so I guess after like a decade or whatever of being a dad he is finally starting to have some time to himself.

Unfortunately there is no new episode of Garbage Time this week, instead we just made the main episode of 9ES a full 90 minutes. So it’s like the normal episode AND Garbage Time all at once! If you still want to show your support just head on over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen all past episodes of Garbage Time!

                • Go Plug Yourself Rewind: Michael Mando (2013)

It’s crazy to me that Michael Mando has been on our show 3 times.

But the first time was way way back in 2013, fresh off of his performance as Vaas in Far Cry 3. Far Cry 6 came out last year and Vaas actually made an appearance in some DLC that came out so you know, full circle or something.

Anyhow, there’s no new episode this week since people got sick and busy with the holidays, but this goes down as one of my favorite episodes ever so take a trip down memory lane with me, wont you?

Even if you’ve heard this episode before you should do yourself a favor and head to the 5 Questions segment at the end of the show, Michael’s story about getting mixed up with the cops is legendary Go Plug Yourself material right there. And this was before he was in Better Call Saul!

As proof of this being recorded in 2013, Walter has short hair and is wearing a Dharma Initiative t-shirt.
