We talk a lot about a lot of things in this episode of 9to5 Entertainment System. We break down the reddit blackout news, Conor McGregor knocking out a mascot and we maybe even figure out why Ridley Scott movies suck after a certain point.
But we also talk about whether or not Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 might be a metaphor for James Gunn’s relationship with Marvel/Disney.
But don’t take my word for it, here is chatgpt once again to explain:
Rocket’s storyline in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 can be interpreted as a metaphor for James Gunn’s relationship with Disney, with Disney represented by the character of the High Evolutionary. This metaphor emphasizes the power dynamics, conflicts, and challenges that Gunn may have encountered while working with the studio.
The High Evolutionary, a character known for his desire to control and manipulate genetic structures, represents Disney in this metaphorical interpretation. Just as the High Evolutionary seeks to shape and control lifeforms, Disney, as a powerful studio, has a vested interest in maintaining control over its intellectual properties and maintaining a specific brand image.
Rocket, a genetically modified and rebellious creature, symbolizes James Gunn. Rocket’s nature reflects Gunn’s unique artistic vision and his willingness to challenge established norms. Gunn, like Rocket, brings his distinct voice and creativity to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
Throughout the storyline, the High Evolutionary attempts to exert control over Rocket, dictating his actions and imposing limitations on his freedom. This mirrors the potential struggles Gunn may have faced with Disney’s influence and restrictions on his creative choices. Gunn’s desire for artistic freedom and his willingness to push boundaries could have clashed with Disney’s desire for control and adherence to their established brand.
Rocket’s journey of self-discovery and defiance against the High Evolutionary’s control represents Gunn’s own resistance and quest for creative autonomy. Just as Rocket rebels against the High Evolutionary’s manipulation, Gunn may have pushed back against Disney’s attempts to restrict his artistic expression.
Ultimately, Rocket’s triumph over the High Evolutionary can be seen as a metaphor for Gunn’s ability to navigate the power dynamics and find a balance in his relationship with Disney. It suggests that Gunn may have successfully asserted his creative vision and secured a level of autonomy within the collaboration.
In summary, Rocket’s storyline in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 can be interpreted as a metaphor for James Gunn’s relationship with Disney, with Disney represented by the High Evolutionary. This metaphor highlights the potential struggles and power dynamics that Gunn may have faced while working with a powerful studio, emphasizing his quest for creative freedom and the importance of finding a balance between artistic expression and studio control.
Not bad robot. Not bad at all…
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time we talk once again about the League of Legends North American pro walkout that may or may not be happening. Why is the weather always terrible when we record these? It’s June! It’s cold and raining! That means it’s time for another Osheaga podcast!
To get ourselves (and you!) hyped up for one of our favorite weekends of the year Sarah and I do what we do every year: listen to the whole dang lineup and make an impossible to follow schedule for all 3 days by falling in love with a dozen artists each day! This episode we starting looking into Saturday’s lineup and choose some of our favorite non-headline acts.
Our picks:
Not going to lie – when I first glanced at the Saturday lineup I was a little less enthusiastic than I was about Friday. However, after digging in to the Saturday lineup I am very excited for it. The vibe is a lot more laid back but for Day 2 of a festival I think just hanging out and listening to some of these artists is going to be amazing.
Anyhow, it’s June which means Sarah and I are currently hitting up the Montreal Fringe Festival pretty hard. See you in two weeks!
Osheaga runs from August 2nd to 4th at Parc Jean Drapeau, music starts at 14h each day. Check out osheaga.com for more info and tickets.
All audio clips are copyright of their respective owners and used solely with the intention of promoting Osheaga.

The Montreal podcast that asks owner of TurboHaus Sergio Da Silva: What’s your favorite place in NDG? We also ask him if he’s seen Ted Lasso. Both of those questions were submitted back in Episode 277 by Walter J. Lyng and Troy Stark respectively.
We’ve had Sergio Da Silva on the show before. A few times actually. The last time was right before the pandemic in 2020. So let’s hope that doesn’t happen again.
I hadn’t really thought about it until we started recording but I’ve seen a LOT of demolition derbies. Growing up my dad was very much a car guy. While he typically gravitated towards the more “legitimate” automotive arts, demolition derbies were always just kind of around. Should a kid be watching a bunch of drunk guys smash cars into each other? Who knows?
However, as Sergio points out repeatedly: It is entertainment at its finest.
So it is that Sergio has rallied support for the official TurboHaüs entry in the 2023 edition of the Ormstown Fair Demolition Derby. 1-2-3 Demolition! Note: There’s a kid’s derby. What the actual hell.
Anyways, we weren’t super clear about what the prizes are on the episode but it seems like there’s a way to win a case of beer. If you can’t make it out to Ormstown this weekend, head over to TurboHaüs literally any time to have a beer and buy a t-shirt.
Enjoy the show!
As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude!

Lawrence Corber also produces some shows you may have heard of (you should probably check out the next Healthy Living show when you get a chance) and if you’re close with him you can call him Lully. The other way to call him “Lully” is to follow him on his socials. @Lully514 on Instagram.

The St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival is back! That means our Fringe podcast is back!
Sarah and I are super excited for this year’s Fringe lineup and to celebrate we sat down with the artists behind 3 incredible sounding shows that will be happening as part of the 2023 editions of the Montreal Fringe Festival.
They are (and click the links for more info and tickets!):
It’s the perfect blend of three different shows that will get you thinking about fan fiction, kung-fu and marriage. Your mind will be spinning as you contemplate time-loops, car accidents and Harry Styles. You will dive head first into the world of best friends, daily Facebook posts and anesthesiology. I won’t tell you which show all these things are from, you will have to listen to the whole episode to find out for yourself.
Seriously though, there is so much happening this year, if you’ve been putting off getting back into the Fringe due to that big ole’ pandemic you have a whole lot of fringing to catch up on. Hopefully Sarah and I will see you at the Fringe Park and we can share a beer!
The Montreal Fringe has already kicked off! Head to montrealfringe.ca for tickets, showtimes and good vibes all around.
Enjoy!

There’s a point in this episode of 9ES where Jon finds out that Keith went to Disney World and simply asks: “Why?”
I think Jon is probably the least enticed by extravagant consumerism of the three of us so I understand why he might question the reasoning of spending three days and a pretty exorbitant amount of money just basking in all the glory of The Mouse.
However, it must be clearly stated that Keith got to build a BB-Unit droid that he can now drive around his home.
While I admit that a certain degree of separation has to be maintained between the fun and “magic” you’re experiencing in the theme parks and the absolute all encompassing corporate ooze surrounding you, I also have to admit that it’s a whole heck of a lot of fun.
The last time Keith was in Disney World they hadn’t yet consumed Star Wars and Marvel. Maybe if they hadn’t there would be less for him to enjoy. But they have. So now it’s all there. Comics, cartoons and Star Wars dripping from every surface.
On the topic of Marvel – Scott and Keith both saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. And they both liked it a lot.
And they both got a little emotional (albeit at different points of the film apparently).
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time we talk about the League of Legends North American pro walkout that is currently being staged, along with the state of esports in general. We also talk about Nightmare Alley for some reason. Oh, and Jon finally saw the D&D movie – if that sounds cool then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

Sure it snowed last week but that doesn’t mean that summer isn’t around the corner, does it? And one of the best parts of summer in Montreal is Osheaga weekend.
This episode we take a look once again at Friday’s lineup and choose some of our favorite non-headline acts:
Our picks:
This year’s Friday lineup has to be one of our favorites since limiting ourselves to “just” 10 bands was actually pretty difficult. Some artists who we love on Friday include: Two Feet, Rina Sawayama, bbno$ and Kora. Suffice it to say we’re probably getting to the festival pretty early on Friday.
Anyhow, June is right around the corner so that means that we’re about to dive into Saturday’s lineup. See you in two weeks!

Part of me loves the fact that other podcasts try their best to stay up to the minute with pop-culture references and current events and our podcast sometimes talks about movies like Meet the Spartans for 20 minutes.
And it’s not like this show is JUST a bad-movie podcast or something, so who even knows why any of this resonates with our audience.
But every month we get a good little number of people downloading the show so, we must be doing something right?
I’m not going to lie, a decade ago when we started up this website a tiny little part of me was like “yeah, we’ll be like Vice!” So it’s a little sad to me to see it’s demise in 2023. But hey, we’re still going strong – take that Vice!
Seriously though, the company was once evaluated at nearly $6 billion is likely going to be sold off for parts to the tune of $225 million. Bummer.
Finally, if I could recommend taking a look at this video to understand the pure lunacy people are getting up to in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. I’m not sure but I don’t think Nintendo envisioned Link rolling around Hyrule in a tank when they designed this game, but the fact that they designed a game where you could make that exact thing happen is a true testament to their mastery of video game design.
Meanwhile over on Garbage Time we dive haphazardly into the filmography of Guy Ritchie and Keith talks about Scott Snyder’s “The Batman Who Laughs”. If that sounds like your cup of tea (since you live in a castle now) – then show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

In celebration of the NDG Comedy Fest that is going on right now we are turning the clocks back to when Derek Seguin had just SiriusXM Top Comic back in 2015.
Why? Well Derek Seguin will be closing out the festivities this weekend at The Wheel Club this Sunday, May 2st (get your tickets now). It’s crazy that we recorded this nearly 8 years ago. This city has been through quite a bit and I’m honestly super stoked for Walter to be putting this all together to celebrate English comedy in my old stomping ground of NDG.
This episode is quite a crazy time capsule. Derek spends some time in this episode talking about Mike Ward’s legal battles with Petit Jérémy – a legal case that took another 6 years or so to sort itself out (if it actually has).
As I mention in the lead-in to this episode, we’ve had a huge chunk of the performers of the NDG Comedy Fest on our little podcast over here. Off the top of my head we’ve had Derek Seguin, Joey Elias, Abby Stonehouse, Troy Stark, Mike Carrozza, Vance Michel, Serag Meletian, Daniel Carin, Elspeth Wright and probably a few more … not to mention our co-hosts Chris Venditto of Walter J. Lyng or the wonderfully talented and filthy provider of our theme song Leighland Beckman.
Anyhow, sit back and enjoy this trip down memory lane and then immediately buy yourself some tickets for the NDG COMEDY FEST.

Our Unofficial Osheaga Podcast is back for 2023! We’re kicking things off with our first look at Friday’s lineup!
Every two weeks Sarah and I will be digging into the entire lineup of this year’s Osheaga to give you music recommendations all summer long. We’ll be picking ten acts from each day, talking about them and playing clips of their songs to give you a feel for their music and why we think they’ll be an amazing show.
But wait – you don’t need us to tell you why you should probably check out Kendrick Lamar now do you? So (for the purposes of this show) we ruled out the entire top line of each day of the lineup. So yes, that means you will need to decide for yourself if you’re going to see the likes of Billie Eilish or not. Trust us, if you listen to all of these episodes you might find yourself running back and forth between stages all weekend and discovering your new favorite artist.
If you want to check out the full tracks we share in this episode check this out:

The Montreal podcast that asks Walter J. Lyng and Troy Stark (of The NDG Comedy Fest) not one, but two questions:
Those questions asked by Yannick and Alex (Les Voyeurs de Vues) back in episode 276.
My former (and sometimes still) co-host Walter J. Lyng can never be faulted for his work ethic. It seems like every time he closes a project off he’s got something bigger and better in the pipeline. Why not add “organize a comedy festival” to that list?
The inaugural NDG Comedy Fest is happening next weekend from May 19th to the 21st in beloved Montreal borough NDG. Walter is bringing out some of the biggest names in the Montreal comedy scene for your enjoyment. Derek Seguin, Leighland Beckman, Joey Elias, Bowser & Blue and a host of other amazing comedians round out the festivities. Walter tells me that the best way to enjoy the NDG Comedy Fest The best way to enjoy the festival is to get the all-access pass (to buy an all-access pass just click on any event and select the all-access pass option at ticketing).
Troy Stark also jumps on this episode (is he one of the NDG Comedy All Stars perhaps?) and we have a grand old time at the back of Grumpy’s.
Listen to the show, go to the NDG Comedy Fest.
It’s that easy.
