It’s been a busy few weeks. Between Just For Laughs, Osheaga, a wedding and a 2000 mile road trip we kinda, sorta, maybe didn’t get around to booking anything for this week’s Go Plug Yourself.
We had hoped to hook something up with an Osheaga band but it just wasn’t in the cards this year.
So instead we take a trip down memory lane to Osheaga 2017 when Scott and I sat down with Emma and Dragos from Men I Trust who were kind enough to join us at the back of Grumpy’s the Monday after the 2017 edition of Osheaga. At the time they had only released their self-titled album and Headroom and it really felt like they were on the verge of exploding. That feeling proved to be 100% accurate as they would go on to perform at Coachella and Lollapalooza in the leadup to the release of Oncle Jazz. Oncle Jazz became one of the most anticipated and well received albums of 2019 and Untourable Album was a wonderful release during the pandemic.
It was cool to see them setting up their own gear at this year’s Osheaga. One of the things we talk about in this episode is how much the “DIY” ethic permeates the band and 5 years later it was a joy to see them maintain that hands on approach.
Anyhow, sit back and relax and enjoy our chat with Men I Trust.
Oh and hey, if you want “new” podcasts to listen to you can always check out all 8 episodes of this year’s Unofficial Osheaga Podcast on Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts or just about anywhere else you get your podcasts. And if you’re feeling extra generous drop us a rating or review. We <3 U.
As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude!

Wait… Osheaga is over already?
After months of getting hype it’s hard to accept that this Osheaga weekend is already in the past.
Honestly I think Sarah and I may have set a personal best this year having checked out all or some of at least 29 different acts. We’ve spent the last 2 days trying to let our bodies and brains recover and now we’re ready to break down our thoughts on the first Osheaga since 2019.
We talk about acts that met expectations, exceeded expectations and a few little disappointments (BIA?). We’ve got a few stories to share (like bumping into Sad Night Dynamite and finding out Josh has a crush on Dua Lipa… but who doesn’t?) so if you’re looking to relive Osheaga 2022 with us do yourself a favour and check out this episode.
We also spend a little bit of time doing some fantasy booking for the 2023 edition – look, I’m just saying that Björk has an album coming out pretty soon…
We would obviously love to hear your favorite stories about the festival, so drop us a line on on Instagram, Twitter, or wherever. Oh, and if you enjoy our little show we would love for you to subscribe on Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts or just about anywhere else you get your podcasts. And if you’re feeling extra generous drop us a rating or review. We <3 U.
Osheaga 2023 will be from August 4th to 6th at Parc Jean Drapeau. Check out osheaga.com for more info and tickets. See you next year!

Why hello there, you’ve caught us in a bit of a predicament.
Between the Just for Laughs specials, the Osheaga specials and my planned trip to Winnipeg it seems like we’ve simply run out of time to record a brand new episode of the 9to5 Entertainment System!
However, we don’t want to let you down.
We know that some of you might still be sitting on the fence about subscribing to the 9ES Deluxe Level over on our Patreon so we’ve decided to give you a taste of what you may be missing. We dug into the vast Garbage Time episode archives to grab two episodes that might just encourage you to subcribe:
If this wonderful content pleases you, do yourself a favor and subscribe to 9ES Deluxe. Otherwise, we still hope you enjoyed this filler episode of the show. We <3 U.
For the record, “Ernest Shackleton and the 25 Worst Comic Book Movies Ever Made” was my favorite of the Harry Potter books.

Is Lawrence Corber a host or a guest on this episode? It’s not clear. Does it matter? It’s Just for Laughs baby!
If you’ve been following the podcast in the last week or so you know we’ve had a few interviews with a couple of great out of town guests. However, at its heart, Go Plug Yourself is a show about Montrealers so it was only right that we brought in the Grand Daddy of Go Plug Yourself himself Walter J. Lyng along with Vance Michel and co-host Lawrence Corber to talk about some of the amazing local comedy going on this summer in Montreal.
Walter (along with Lawrence, Morgan O’Shea, Reese Turner and Derek Seguin) are bringing back Rad Dads once again this year to Café Cleopatra for Rad Dads Forever and Vance Michel will be a part of Harrison and Gab’s Video Comedy Night. Lawrence and Walter will both be appearing at Figure It Out with Mike Carrozza and Lawrence will also be featured on the Discovery Series. Walter and Lawrence will also both be recording sets for an upcoming JFL Originals album.
*deep breath.
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL – Walter and Vance are also hosting The World’s Smallest Comedy Festival that’s already under way until July 29th at Hurley’s Irish Pub. 12 nights of amazing local comedy because you can’t get enough of that sweet sweet laughter.
As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude!

Lawrence Corber also produces some shows you may have heard of (you should probably check out the next Healthy Living show when you get a chance) and if you’re close with him you can call him Lully. The other way to call him “Lully” is to follow him on his socials. @Lully514 on Instagram.

Our Osheaga Podcast series is almost over, which means it’s almost time for Osheaga!
For our 7th episode we picked five artists that should energize and get you dancing after a full weekend of Osheaga: Royal Blood, Wet Leg, The Halluci Nation, La Doña and Apashe.
Osheaga is coming back in full force from July 29th the 31st at Parc Jean Drapeau and that means our Osheaga podcast series is back too! All summer long Sarah and I will be listening to music from every band featured at all 3 days of Osheaga and sharing some of our favorites with you every two weeks as part of this podcast. 5 bands per episode, 2 episodes devoted to each day of the festival and just to make things a little more interesting we stayed away from the headlining bands of each day, great as they are. If you like the show be sure to subscribe on Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts or just about anywhere else you get your podcasts. So sit back, relax, enjoy the show, enjoy the summer, and see you Osheaga!
If you want to hear full versions of the songs we listen to on this episode check out their music videos on Youtube:

Rosebud Baker closes off this year’s JFL miniseries of Go Plug Yourself podcasts!
On this JFL minisode I talk to Rosebud Baker about her shows at Café Cleopatra where she will performing all new material for the Montreal Just for Laughs crowd. Rosebud has always thought of herself as a pessimist but after the last few years of the pandemic, maybe she’s a realist? Maybe all of our therapists actually owe us some money right now as our some of our worst fears came true. We talk about handling the pandemic with her husband Andy Haynes (her husband and co-host of the “Find Your Beach” podcast) and how her latest material focuses on “what now.”
Rosebud will have a bunch of shows at Café Cleopatra, will be doing a live recording of “Find Your Beach” and will be featured on the Marc Maron Gala. Check out her artist page at hahaha.com for more info and showtimes of all of Rosebud Baker’s shows at the Just for Laughs Festival here in Montreal.
Rosebud Baker is a New York based comedian, writer and actress, who is currently on the writing staff for the award-winning sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live in it’s 47 th season. Her debut hour standup special Whiskey Fists, produced by Bill Burr’s All Things Comedy, premiered on Comedy Central Digital in 2021. The special was a hit with fans and critics alike, as Vulture featured Rosebud in “Comedians You Should and Will Know in 2022.” The New Yorker included her in their annual list of “Best Jokes of 2021” and Rolling Stone gushed that her humor “ranges from merciless self-excavation to slashing social satire graced by intelligence and nuance.” She can be seen in the recurring role of MERI in the new Hulu series Life & Beth alongside Amy Schumer and Michael Cera, and she is a writer and performer on HBO Max’s WGA Award nominated sketch series That Damn Michael Che. Baker also co-hosts the popular weekly podcast Find Your Beach with her husband and fellow comic Andy Haynes.

We’re talking to Katherine Ryan! Montreal’s favorite comedy podcast is back covering this year’s Just for Laughs festival in Montreal!
I got the chance to talk to the amazing Katherine Ryan about her Amazon Prime show “Backstage with Katherine Ryan”, finding love in the fairytale land of Toronto, picking names for people in jokes, cottages and more.
Katherine starred in, wrote and executive produced her 6 x 30’ sitcom, The Duchess, for Netflix Originals which was released globally in 2020 and leapt to the top of the Netflix chart.
She has filmed two critically-acclaimed Netflix Global 60’ stand-up specials – Glitter Room and In Trouble.
Katherine has sold-out venues across the world with her unique shows and has been touring her sell-out new show Missus across the UK and Europe and now returns to her home country of Canada. She took the show to the prestigious Netflix Is A Joke Festival in LA in April of this year.
She is currently filming the lead role in major scripted comedy series, Romantic Getaway, for Sky Comedy in the UK opposite Romesh Ranganathan.
She has been a stalwart on all the UK’s major panel shows, and has co-hosted six series of Your Face or Mine with Jimmy Carr alongside judging four series of Roast Battle for Comedy Central as well as being a judge on Netflix’s first panel show The Fix. In 2019, she hosted The Stand Up Show with Katherine Ryan for CTV.
Katherine hosts the primetime BBC Two jewelry-making competition series All That Glitters which aired to fantastic viewing figures in 2021. A second series has been filmed and will be released this year. Also in 2021, Katherine hosted ITV2’s marquee show Ready to Mingle.
Check her out this year at Just For Laughs performing “Missus” and at the 40th Anniversary Gala. Check out her JFL Artist Page for more info and tickets.

The Montreal podcast that is sitting around wondering whether the number of positive Covid-19 cases will spike following the Montreal Jazz Fest continues to record remotely.
Are we scared of the virus or are we just really into doing this podcast from the comfort of our own homes?
We’ll never tell.
The Jazz Fest, despite probably being a super-spreading event, was amazing and Keith went to it a bunch anyhow.
I wonder if, when 9ES is eventually taken off the air, we will remember this episode and replace every single episode with just a one-hour long loop of “Killing in the Name Of”?
You should be thanking your lucky stars that there even is a new episode out because the Rogers outage happened and maybe all the podcasts were going to get deleted too because of it.
I’m sure this won’t be the last time we talk about Stranger Things 4, since we will almost certainly circle back and dissect it once all of us have finished the season but we talk about it a little anyhow because it’s 9ES and that’s what we do. It’s a sci-fi horror show, set in the 80s with strong ties to D&D… what podcast do you think you’re listening to here?
Meanwhile in Garbage Time, we talk about how Warren Ellis is very rightfully canceled now (even though Keith read his take on Moon Knight), Umbrella Academy and whether or not they’re going to remake Superbad..If all that sounds like the best (because it is), show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

DeAnne Smith returns to Montreal! The Montreal arts & entertainment system that loves Just for Laughs is back! Talking to amazing performers from this year’s edition of the Just for Laughs festival right here in Montreal.
I had the chance to sit down with the always wonderful DeAnne Smith to talk about their show way, way back with our friend Leighland Beckman called “Horrible Things”, doing comedy with a lovely little dog companion and finding comedy in the isolation that may have permeated the last 2 or so years.
DeAnne Smith, a Canadian Comedy Award winner, has performed at Just for Laughs, JFL42, JFL Northwest, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Austin’s Moontower Comedy Fest, the Limestone Comedy Fest, San Francisco Sketchfest, and the Iceland Comedy Festival, just to name a few. They have also been on TV all over the darn world, including appearances on Last Comic Standing and The Late Late Show in the U.S., as well as comedy shows in Canada, Australia and the UK. Their video Straight Men, Step Your Game Up has over 46 million views. Their Netflix half-hour comedy special, the critically-praised Gentleman Elf, debuted January 2019. They just taped their second special at the Just for Laughs Festival in July 2021.
DeAnne will be starring in their own featured show AND will be featured on the Hannah Gadsby Gala show. More info and showtimes here. Be sure to check out DeAnne and all the other amazingly funny and talented people coming to town for Just for Laughs, July 13 to 31st in Montreal.
