    • 9ES261: Rise From Her Grave

There is nowhere else you need to go to find hot takes about Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress than a podcast from Montreal featuring 3 white dudes born in the 80s.

We are literally the only people on the planet qualified to talk about this issue. It does beg the question though: Is Napoleon’s uniform more historically important than the dress worn by Marilyn Monroe while she sang “Happy Birthday” to JFK?

Can an article of clothing even be that historically significant?

This is why you listen to this podcast.

Just because it can be written out here to increase the chances of people seeing it: Man the Toronto Maple Leafs are ridiculous.

      • 2005-2012 = zero playoff appearances

      • 2013 = “It was 4-1…” Leafs rally back from a 3-1 deficit in the series against the Bruins and take a 4-1 lead in Game 7… then lololol

      • They miss the next 3 years of playoffs

      • 2017 = They take a 2-1 series lead against the Caps and then lose 3 games in a row to the Caps.

      • 2018 = Here come the Bruins again! Down 3-1 in the series again, the Leafs win game 5 and 6 to push another Game 7! Oh no!

      • 2019 = The Bruins, again? The Leafs are UP 3-2 in the series… just one more win to get out of the 1st round! Nope. Drop 2 in a row.

      • 2020 = Honorary mention: The 8th place Leafs lose to the 9th place Blue Jackets in the 5 game qualifying round, of course they pushed it to 5 games and lost in the 5th.

      • 2021 = The most beautiful collapse of all really… Leafs blow a 3-1 series lead and lose to the Habs in 7.

      • 2022 = Another 1st round exit in 7 games… despite being up 3-2. Dropping 2 games in a row and still not getting out of the first round.

So if you count the play-in round of 2020… since 2013 they are an incredible 0-10 when they have the opportunity to win and send a team home.

        That’s absurd.

Meanwhile in Garbage Time, Keith talks about Rich Aucoin’s incredible live show at Ursa in Montreal and the Shudder Exclusive Series “Cursed Films” and Scott takes another few shots at how old Mike Smith is just for good measure. We also talk about how good that Weird Al biopic might be. If all that sounds like the best (because it is), show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

      • Go Plug Yourself 255 Mega Show!

The Montreal podcast that started it all celebrates it’s 250th episode right here in episode 255!

So normally every 50 episodes we use a nice big round number as an excuse to do a live episode with some mixed degrees of success. The last time we did this it was February 2020 for episode 200 and Walter’s supposed retirement from co-hosting.

Since then he’s probably co-hosted at least as many episode as Inés, maybe more. Also since then some shit went down.

Anyways, this episode is one part what episode 250 should have been PLUS one part holiday shit show MINUS actually doing a live a show in front of an audience. You get it.

We got ALL the Go Plug Yourself co-hosts together in person to ramble on for a good 30 to 40 minutes and then take care of the only actual business of the episode. That’s right, we have new questions for our guests. Inés, Walter, Lawrence and Chris all have a jam packed summer of shows coming up so do yourself a favor and follow them on every single social media platform that exists. Enjoy the show!

        Credit Where Credit is Due

As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Aural Turpitude!

Chris Venditto is another funny person in Montreal who you can see all over the place and if you don’t want to miss him take the stage you should follow him on all the socials. He’s @chrisvenditto on Twitter and Instagram so you should follow him on those two things. He also produces shows with the guys at Perfect Bite Productions who you should also follow on Instagram and on Facebook.

Keith does all sorts of things here on 9to5.cc, he works with the other founders on 9to5 (illustrated), co-hosts our two podcasts: The 9to5 Entertainment System and Go Plug Yourself and sometimes blogs here as The Perspicacious Geek.

Inés Anaya never stops finding ways to be funny: writing for Hindwing Press and The Beaverton, running shows like Stand Up Story Slam and getting on the mic at comedy shows all over the city when it is legally possible to do so. The best way to keep track of what she’s up to next is on Instagram @clout__atlas

Lawrence Corber also produces some shows you may have heard of (you should probably check out the next Healthy Living show when you get a chance) and if you’re close with him you can call him Lully. The other way to call him “Lully” is to follow him on his socials. @Lully514 on Instagram.

Walter J. Lyng is a stand-up comedian based out of Montreal, you should follow him on Twitter @wallygoodtimes and on Facebook: Walter J. Lyng

        • 9ES260: 150 Million Years Of Solitude

The Montreal podcast that takes a little bit longer to figure out when Tyrannosaurus Rex and Stegosaurus were alive than you might expect is back. Dinosaur facts!

(More dinosaur facts: I misspelled both “Tyrannosaurus” and “Stegosaurus” while typing them! Feel free to guess how.)

At a certain point in this episode Scott posits that CM Punk is one of the most recognizable wrestlers currently actively wrestling. Listen, Keith owns 4 pieces of wrestling merch and 3 of them are CM Punk branded so you would think he would be ready to avidly agree, but he does not.

Let’s turn to Twitter to measure the global reach of currently active wrestlers even though, as we discuss in this episode, many of these followers might be fake. The Top 4 that we posit have global recognition of active wrestlers are: Ronda Rousey, Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns and CM Punk. Let’s see how many followers they have:

          • Ronda Rousey: 3.4 Million followers

          • CM Punk: 2.7 Million followers

          • Brock Lesnar: 1.4 Million followers

          • Roman Reigns: 4.6 Million followers

Brock is probably hurting since he hasn’t tweeted since 2020 but that’s still a pretty big case for Roman Reigns. A picture of him that he tweeted on April 30th holding the belts had 500 comments, 2000 retweets and 17,000 likes. Nobody else on that list gets close to those numbers.

Then again, he works for a company that his piped in cheers over stadium speakers to try to make it look like people were actually cheering for him a few years ago so maybe this entire exercise has been pointless.

I think it’s also worth noting that Ronda is an absolute abysmal follow on Twitter.

Garbage Time returns this week since we’re all healthy and we reward you for your patience with an extra-long edition of it! A meandering conversation that includes Scott’s takes on “The Batman” and trying to figure out just who “El Muerto” is in the Marvel Universe. No, not the one in the DC Universe. Not sure who we’re talking about? He’s getting a Sony produced movie starring Bad Bunny so you will find out soon! If all that sounds like the best (because it is), show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time!

          • Elspeth Wright Returns! – GPYS 254

The Montreal arts and entertainment podcast that dares to ask comedian Elspeth Wright: “What are your thoughts on two-way mirrors?” – that question of course asked by none other than Mike Carrozza in episode 253.

Elspeth Wright is one of those comedians who has made her presence felt in a big way in the Montreal comedy. Not only featuring on shows all over town but also producing a bunch of amazing and unique comedy shows across the city. She’s the host of Battle of Wits at the Diving Bell Social Club up on St-Laurent and has just launched a brand new night of comedy at the new Montreal Improv location on Notre-Dame Ouest in Saint Henri.

“Stand Up Saint-Henri” is going to be happening every Tuesday from May 10th onwards and will feature a special focus on queer and non-binary performers (while also playing host to “acceptable bros” like our very own Chris Venditto on May 10th) and will be hosted of course by Elspeth herself.

But I guess more important than all of that is the fact that Elspeth Wright once taught telepathy to children in Hong Kong. Seriously.

We get into the shows, telepathy, Elon Musk and so much more in this episode so sit back and enjoy the show!

          • 9ES259: Egg

The Montreal podcast that revels in the celebration of a man-sized bunny stashing eggs around the house is back for episode 259.

We speculate a little here that Easter Bunny might be a pagan thing, but nope, it’s rooted in one of the weird corners of Christianity after all::

“The hare was a popular motif in medieval church art. In ancient times, it was widely believed (as by Pliny, Plutarch, Philostratus, and Aelian) that the hare was a hermaphrodite. The idea that a hare could reproduce without loss of virginity led to an association with the Virgin Mary, with hares sometimes occurring in illuminated manuscripts and Northern European paintings of the Virgin and Christ Child.”

Speaking of figures of legend, Keith found out about “Let Me Solo Her” over the weekend so we spend a little bit of time talking about Elden Ring and the strange tradition of brave players in their underwear fighting bosses by themselves.

We do a pretty good job of explaining why this player is a huge badass but so does this guy on YouTube.

I find the idea of these video game based tiny folk heroes kind of fascinating, and unlike the staged variety (Leeroy Jenkins), Let Me Solo Her is an honest to goodness (video game) hero. Showing up in other people’s games with a pot on his head and helping players defeat the hardest boss in the game.

            That shit’s cool man.

Unfortunately, there is no Garbage Time this week. As you can probably tell during the episode Jono is feeling a little below the weather and Scott is just all the way not on the show. We’ll think of something to make it up to you. If you still want to show your support and check out past episodes of Garbage Time then head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier.

          • Mike Carrozza Returns! – GPYS 253

Mike Carrozza (Montreal comedy’s favorite son) returns to the back of Grumpy’s to record an in person episode of Go Plug Yourself! Oh, and he also answers Angus’s question from episode 252: What is the first thing you read that really stuck with you?

Mike Carrozza has a number of shows that involve his name either following or preceding the show title and Figure It Out with Mike Carrozza is no different. What is different though is that this isn’t your dad’s comedy show. Unless your dad is super cool. Which he is, I’ve met him. Mike is up on stage for the entire show and in a mix of improv and stand-up comedy he will riff with the comedians as they perform, work out their jokes and have a silly time full of laughter and mirth.

Now, as if you needed more incentive I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that every single co-host of Go Plug Yourself will be performing. That’s right, Inés Anaya, Walter Lyng, Chris Venditto and Lawrence Corber are all on the bill.

So if you like comedy, or you like this show and preferably if you like both get on down to the Diving Bell Social Club on Tuesday, April 19th at 8 pm.

Until then (or after then), enjoy the show! Mike Carrozza provides not one, but two stories about him laughing directly in the face of unsavory characters. Legend.

          • 9ES258: How Can She

The Montreal podcast that would definitely flaunt a 5 million dollar Pokemon card at Wrestlemania is back with all of the hottest takes on geek and pop-culture.

It was Wrestlemania this past weekend which is the time of year where WWE tries its damnedest to gain wider cultural relevance than usual. The powers that be (aka Vince McMahon) will bend over backwards to try to get casual fans to tune in to the “Showcase of the Immortals” to watch pro wrestling. This year was no different featuring our beloved boys from Jackass and Logan Paul flaunting a 5 million dollar Pokemon card.

Let that sink in for a second, because that’s a lot to take in. That there is a Pokemon card worth over $5M USD. That Logan Paul owns it. That he wore it around his neck like bling at Wrestlemania.

More proof that we live in the dumbest timeline I guess.

Speaking of the dumbest timeline: we devote some time to talking about ‘The Slap” because this is a pop-culture show and one of the biggest celebrities slapping a comedian at The Oscars is the poppiest of pop-culture.

Was Big Willy freaking out on human growth hormones? We will certainly at least speculatethat he might be.

Meanwhile, on this this week’s episode of Garbage Time we get into some of the insane stories surrounding pre-production of Mad Max: Fury Road and we lament whether or not Wesley Snipes’ Blade is directly responsible for the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Show your support, subscriber and check out Garbage Time by subscribing on our Patreon page at the 9ES Deluxe tier.

          • Angus Byers (The Hypnophonics) – GPYS 252

The Montreal arts and entertainment podcast that asks Angus Byers of The Hypnophonics: “What is your favourite picture of yourself?” That question asked back in episode 250 from Confabulation’s Matt Goldberg. Spoiler alert: the answer to Matt’s question is right there in the episode image (shoutout to Marisa Parisella Photography).

As Angus Byers tells it, his entire life has been guided by a liberal consumption of booze. The hooch lead to both his role as vocalist of The Hypnophonics and as one of Montreal’s most beloved tattoo artist at DFA Tattoos. This is not an endorsement of heavy drinking kids, it’s just a statement of fact. If your name is Angus and you find yourself three sheets to the wind, your life might be about to change.

With more and more venues booking comedy and music shows we decided to ask Angus to come on the show to plug the return of the psychobilly outfit The Hypnophonics to one of Montreal’s most infamous stages: Les Foufounes Electriques. They’ll be opening up for The Creepshow this Friday, April 1st at Foufs, $18 in advance, $20 at the door.

Do yourself a favour and check out “Oh No – Oh Ya!” by The Hypnophonics and enjoy the show!
