The Montreal geek and pop culture podcast that is definitely trapped in The Matrix and loves Highlander 2 returns for episode 252.
I am not sure whether or not we talk about in the main episode or as part of Garbage Time but at one point in the original Matrix Agent Smith says that 1999 was the last time that humans were still thinking for themselves. It was before the machines started thinking for us.
That line is probably one of the most prescient things in the whole movie. I wonder how outlandish it was in 1999 to make a prediction that machine driven AIs and algorithms would be able to manipulate how humanity thinks. Anyhow, here we are.
We spend almost the entire first half of the episode talking about Matrix: Resurrections and man, what a frustrating film. I don’t think I’ve been so excited by a film’s first act to be so completely let down by the third. It’s maddening. Maybe I’m not in on the joke? Maybe Lilly Wachowski really wanted Warner Bros to lose 100 million dollars and that’s the point?
When we decided to subject Jon to Highlander II: The Quickening, I don’t think any of us could have predicted how much he was going to enjoy it. It honestly sounds like one of the greatest cinematic rollercoasters of all time.
2022 is full of surprises kids.
If you enjoy 9ES, do yourself a solid and check out our Patreon and subscribe to the “9ES Deluxe” level. On this week’s Garbage Time we discuss some grim Covid-19 implications for the planet and then also run through the superhero films of 2021. For 2021 we kept things a little more low key than usual for our annual shit show. I think 4 people is tied with our smallest previous shit show but I’m too lazy to go back into the expansive GPYS archives to verify that claim. Why? Well, if you haven’t noticed the entire province (nay country, nay planet) is a bit of shit show right now so in a way, maybe this is the biggest shit show ever?
Walter, Lawrence, Chris and I have a few drinks, spark a few joints and let hot takes fly with abandon. We talk pandemic, steaks, waiters, New Year’s specials and more as we try to stay positive about what 2022 might have in store for us and decide what we want to leave behind in 2021.
With everything shut down it does beg the question about what our next episode will be. Will it be another episode of “Go Quarantine Yourself” or will there be something to plug for the traditional “Go Plug Yourself”? Who knows man. In these unprecedented, uncertain times the only way to have any kind of certainty is to LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE BABY.
Enjoy the show!

2021 is over and the Montreal geek podcast that isn’t going to say something cheesy like “at least the year is over” because we are afraid of what 2022 might have in store for us is back to review 2021!
Spoiler alert: It more or less sucked!
However, we do manage to find some positivity and we try to lift your mood a little as we run down our favorite movies, tv shows and news stories from the year that was “Year 2” of a global pandemic.
I’m not gonna lie, they just announced another curfew and lockdown here in Quebec and it’s hard to stay positive about anything these days but I really do enjoy making this show with Scott and Jon and it means a lot when someone tells me they listen and dig what we’re doing.
That said, we are all trying to keep our chin up and stay afloat here and I really wish you and your loved ones all the best. This sucks guys, hang in there and hopefully this dumb podcast amuses you. It’s weird for me to kind of be speechless but here we are. I just got to believe that at some point all this pandemic shit will be in the rear view for good (until the next one anyhow).
Much love.
We cooked up a very special episode of “Garbage Time” for our Patreon Subscribers this week, we run through a list of the hottest holiday toys from the late 70s to the 2000s and it’s a lot of fun. If that interests you, head over to our Patreon Page and subscribe to the “9ES Deluxe” level. Garbage Time episodes come out the Friday after the main show.
Enjoy!

The Montreal podcast that is back in isolation returns to talk about sports.
As Chris Venditto continues his mission to work his way into sports talk radio we bring back “Go Quarantine Yourself” to talk about sports and Succession.
This is a fun, free wheeling conversation between myself and Venditto that spans the wide world of sports during a pandemic. We talk (obviously) about the resurgence of Covid-19 that has rendered a show about plugging other shows a little useless, discuss whether or not any athletes should go to the Olympics (probably not), review what 2021 has been like for our beloved Montreal Canadiens and then dig into one of the best television shows on the air right now: Succession.
Stay tuned for our next episode which will of course be our annual holiday sh!t show. Were we looking forward to getting together in person to get drunk and ramble on mic for an hour? Of course we were. But it looks like we will probably be recording this year’s edition remotely… again.
Stay safe everyone. Support local business and local artists and all that so that we have all of those wonderful things when this thing is finally over.
*sigh*

The Montreal geek and pop culture podcast that should probably own more tigers if we want to be featured on Tiger King season 3 is back!
Not enough podcasts own enough tigers man.
When I first heard that they were releasing a second season of Tiger King, a lot of people probably wondered: “but why?” I, on the other hand, thought that it made perfect sense. When absolutely everyone involved is out of their mind batshit you can just point cameras at them and make season after season of big cat related mayhem.
Also featured on this episode is the tale of Porfirio Rubirosa, the well endowed drinker of the Dominican “aphrodisiac” known as Mama Juana. It’s crazy that our children are not learning about this guy in school. Even his wikipedia page reads like the resume of the Most Interesting Man in the World.
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he was actually the inspiration for those commercials.
Early on in this episode, Keith uses the word “hokum”. There was a brief period after recording where he was wondering “hey, is that word racist?” and we are glad to report that (according to Oxford) it is not!
9ES, where learning comes first.
If you enjoy 9ES, do yourself a solid and check out our Patreon and subscribe to the “9ES Deluxe” level. It’s literally the only thing we want for the holidays. On this week’s Garbage Time we discuss which film series we would rather be forced to watch in its entirety: Star Trek or Star Wars. The answers might shock you! We also talk about UFC 269.

The Montreal podcast that asks professional wrestler Shayne Hawke from IWS: “What is the thing that happened in your life that surprised you the most?” asked of course by our last guest: Francois Vigneault (TITAN, Orcs in Space) in GPYS 244.
Fun fact, we actually had Shayne on the show way back in 2014 since we love ourselves some wrestling on this here show. Times have certainly changed since then. Not only did Shayne suffer a series of injuries that looked like they were going to keep him out of the ring permanently, but he also got over those injuries and can wrestle again!
Shayne is now a mastermind over at the International Wrestling Syndicate (IWS) and also runs things down at the IWS Dojo where he will teach you (yes, you) how to wrestle. You can follow Shayne on Instagram, Twitter and I’m told even Tik Tok.
Lawrence steps into the co-host this episode and also he and his fiancée Eve-Line step up to host part of Episode 186 of the Super J-Cast (a New Japan Pro Wrestling Podcast) that you can listen to here.

The Montreal geek and pop culture podcast that thinks Dune’s giant sand worms are cooler than Shang-Chi’s big giant dragons is back another episode. Trust the science.
So by all accounts Lowtax was not a great person, probably not even a “good” person. But in a lot of ways that is pretty emblematic of the internet on the whole. It’s filled with not good people. It’s filled with shitty people. Or people pretending to be shitty, which is kind of the same thing. Was he kind of ahead of the curve when it came to predicting that the internet would make you stupid and coming up with a way to monetize that over 20 years ago? Definitely.
When most people were still Asking Jeeves questions at the public computer in the library Something Awful was probably discovering goatse. Let that sink in.
Something we don’t really bring up when discussing the Travis Scott Astroworld Tragedy (brought to you in part by FortNite) was that Travis Scott has been charged twice for inciting riots at his concerts. Both times pleading guilty. So his lip service “how could this have happened” apology rings extra hollow.
Finally the back half of the show is all about those good-good blockbuster movies. We watched both Dune and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which means we get really nerdy up in here about comic books and sci-fi. Both of them should be up on The List sooner or later.
Garbage Time is back this week and we talk a bunch about AEW and then about some movies that were not good or memorable enough to be mentioned on the main show and then we talk about vampires. Vampires are so cool. Check out our Patreon Page and subscribe to the 9ES Deluxe level tier to get access to that primo content. You will love it more than some people love their own parents.

The Montreal podcast that asks comic creator Francois Vigneault: How well do you sleep? That question asked by Seth Galina back in episode 243.
We’ve always loved comics here at Go Plug Yourself. In fact, comic artist Yanick Paquette was on our 6th episode ever to talk about Swamp Thing an incredible 10 years ago. And I’ve had a special place in my heart for indie comics since I was in high-school. So it was that I was tremendously excited to book Francois Vigneault on the show.
Francois Vigneault is the incredibly talented artist, writer and creator responsible for TITAN and is the artist for Orcs In Space (created by Justin Roiland, along with writers Michael Tanner, Rashad Gheith and Abed Gheith). We talk about how Francois developed as an artist, where music fits into his art and the differences between working on your own creations versus more collaborative work.
Inés Anaya steps up as co-host for this episode and fully endures a long chat about comic books like a pro.
Check out everything that Francois has going on over at his official website and if you are in Montreal Francois will be at Librairie Z (3420 Ontario East) tomorrow November 13th from 2 to 4 pm.
Also we once again recorded this episode from Grumpy’s so hey, things are finally getting back to normal.
Enjoy the show!

The Montreal geek and pop culture podcast that isn’t quite done with Halloween yet talks about spooky stuff for another episode. You know, spooky stuff like the ongoing antitrust lawsuit against Google?
The Google antitrust stuff is interesting. Whenever Google (or Amazon… or Facebook… or Apple) get outed for doing sketchy shit I think most of us see it coming from a mile away. Oh, Google has been manipulating the entirety of advertising on the internet for years? Tell me something I don’t know. It’s kind of sad that it only really becomes newsworthy when someone tries to call them to task.
Jono does a pretty good job of breaking down exactly what Google was up to but this story is far from over.
We recorded this episode on November 1st which meant that most of our movie watching for the last two weeks was dominated by films for the so-called “Spooky Season”. From classics like The Thing and Psycho to new releases like Werewolf Within and Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin.
Also, kids should be allowed to run around screaming on Halloween. If 20,000 people are allowed to go to the Bell Center and scream at men on skates a few times a week then kids can get their scream on when they’re jacked up on candy. There, I said it.
Due to some technical difficulties on our part we weren’t able to record the normal episode of Garbage Time this week. Instead we re-posted a classic episode of “9to5 Movie Club” where we watched the film Naked Weapon. If you haven’t heard it yet, it’s great. And you are a Patron and want more Movie Club content, do let us know. Check out our Patreon Page and subscribe to the 9ES Deluxe level tier. You will love it.
