  • 132: Exercise and TBI's

    Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies!

Here we go with episode 132!

Today's chat is built around exercise after experiencing a Traumatic Brain Injury. We explore some ways that it is beneficial and pass along some comments from some scientific study on the subject. We all know that movement and exercise in general is good for us, but it can be even more challenging to those in this community to get started or continue.

Terry has a very unique perspective on the subject. She was workout machine, a certified personal trainer, and a Special Education teacher prior to her last injury. Currently she is building a modified program for herself. Blending these three attributes together really offers some cool insight into the topic discussed today.

We touch base on some science, the specific benefits for TBI Warriors, starting where you are at, as well as offering some strategies. As an added bonus we also pass along some pointers to the Battle Buddies and how they may be able to help their loved one along.

  • 130: Speak Your Truth

    Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies!

Today we speak pretty candidly around the subject of you the Warrior speaking your truth.

As we all know by being in the community being believed and taken seriously after an injury can be quite challenging. Whether it is with family, medical professionals or employers, every Warrior has run across people who simply don't understand or believe you.

There is no way around this, but overall awareness is developing. It is critical that throughout the healing process that Warriors find and articulate exactly what they are going through whenever appropriate and needed.

Doing this can lead to confidence and a sense of control in their treatment, aid the medical community in assisting and getting those close to understand better. All this helps the Warrior heal better.

Hope you enjoy! Let us know

  • 129: Gettin' Real with Jaclyn Smolik

Here we go with Episode 129, Terry, the inspiration for the program  will join us shortly along with today's guest Jaclyn Smolik

You spend your entire life focused and in love with the game of soccer. You go on to play college ball, become captain of the team and the teams leading goal scorer. Then boom it's taken away with one simple blow to your head.

Jaclyn tells us today what it has been like for her to go through this experience. At first she doesn't disclose her injury and it catches up to her. Partly because of the pressure athletes can feel. Now she is after making sure other athletes are aware that they must report.

Fortunately Jaclyn has a very good support system and is very aware of herself and what is needed in her healing so she is making progress. Like many in this world she has had to search for the right doctors and treatment to make headway.

In a few weeks she is off to Physical Therapy school with the hopes of helping others coping with injuries like this.

One thing this injury taught her was that she was racing through life and has learned to slow down since.

  • 128: Is It A Growth Mindset? Or Is It Fixed?

    Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies!

Here we go with Episode 128!

Drew stumbled across an article a few weeks back on mindset. Is was basically a book review highlighting a book written by Dr. Carol Dweck. A researcher who has been studying mindset for over 20 years. She argues that there are only two -Fixed and Growth.

As we have discovered and talked about quite a bit around here, mindset is a big key to healing. Drew figured I'd present the doctors findings and ask Terry what she thinks in terms of this TBI world we find ourselves in.

Terry offered her own experiences and viewpoints and as always we provide some suggestions to help you get into the Growth side a little more.

  • 126: The Secret Society of Knowing

    Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies!

Here we go with Episode 126.

Today we offer a little bit of a lighter topic. We explore what I call a "Secret Society of Knowing". I find it quite fascinating how TBI Warriors can pick one another out and form an immediate lastly relationship.

I touch base with Terry on this today and try to learn why this happens in her view, if she has developed empathy since her injuries, and if she looks back in her life to re-evaluate things since understanding this.

In addition we offer up some feedback that the community offered when I posed this question online.

We got some great responses! Let us know what we may have missed.

Here we go with Episode 124!

Today we are going to tackle routines and why we feel that having them is an important thing, especially in this community.

As always, when we have these kinds of discussions we try to offer suggestions which are many times based off of our own experiences. Today is no exception and we offer some insight and strategies for the Battle Buddies as well.

    Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies!

Here we go with Episode 123, Terry, the inspiration for the program  will join us shortly along with today's special guest Amy Caperchione.

Amy is a Warrior who sustained her TBI after a car accident about 4 years ago at the time of this recording. Her story like all others is unique for different reasons.

At first Amy was not even diagnosed for months having a head injury and once diagnosed went through a regimen of 11 medical professions and services working with her at once!

In the grand scheme Amy did not find it helpful. She feels that she actually started to take steps in the right direction once she removed all pharmaceuticals from her life and added two dogs.

Over the course of the last few years Amy has been documenting her healing adventures with her dogs, one which she fully trained to certified service dog status at District K9 on Instagram.

At first working with her dogs was to help her cope and adjust to her new unorthodox and chaotic life. It has since turned into so much more. She is currently building out District K9 and its offerings further. After listening in be sure to go over there and follow along.
