It’s 70’s movie review time again

Today’s episode contains our reviews of director Robert Altman’s Mcabe and mrs Miller 1971 the gritty western that won’t sugar coat it for ya. Next also from 1971 Candice Bergman (Murphy flippin Brown) stars in T.R. Baskin with James Caan and Peter Boyle for a bit, but this is totally Murphy Brown’s film. Moving on to the other sides of mountain. A.k.a. The other side of mountain 1 (1975) and the sequel O.S.M. 2 (1978) Olympic enthusiast Jill is obsessed with skiing, and nothing bad will ever happen! Both films are directed by Larry Peerce. Starring Marylin Hassett as Jill, with Beu Bridges in 1 and Timothy Buttons drinking coors in 2.

Next is On the yard 1978. An underrated prison movie with the guy who always plays gross guys in movies (John Heard) and Thomas G. Waited as CHILLY. Get ready now for an LDS short Cipher in snow 1974.

The church of latter day saints knock it outta the park with this punk AF 21 minute classic. Finally we leave you with our praise for the 1976 Paul Lynde Halloween special, for ALL you rhinestone truckers out there. Thanks for listening movie fans stay safe out there.

The Spook Who Set by the Door - 1973

If you haven’t seen this please immediately go have fun watching it. If you have but it’s been a minute, here’s a quick reminder. 

Institutionalized racism is here and the CIA is reluctant and bummed to let in their first African American agent, Dan Freeman. Dan learns all he can then returns home to Chicago and trains a street gang to fight for freedom wherever there’s trouble, and voilà right here at home is the trouble and the Cobra’s are trained, ready and have come, to get what’s theirs.

Based on a book by Sam Greenlee. And directed by Ivan Dixon. They had benefits in the community to raise money to make this, and quickly and cleverly shot all over Chicago without permits using what they called guerilla filmmaking to get this film done for us. And we are grateful.

Short eyes 1977-

This and many 70’s films that hold a magnifying glass up to some sick shite, that could be very triggering to some.

I personally find it important but exhausting, I am grateful for those who struggled to share this stuff with us, but it is not something I can do everyday. Pretty obviously if you have not seen this

I suggest watching  before watching it with us. And before you do that, know this.

Short eyes is a very strong honest film about prison written by someone who was there and performed on stage first, then in this film, by people who had survived the horrible dehumanizing conditions that caused  1,281 of the about 2,200 inmates to revolt and take over a section of Attica state prison. Crying out for needed changes in the horrid prison system only to be  massacred by state troopers sanctioned by the governor who was sanctioned by the president, but that is another story. We’ll get to that. Short eyes is another cry. It does not pull punches. Anyone truly interested in learning about institutionalized racism, class struggle, struggle! These people fought,  struggled, and survived, to tell this story to you. Miguel Pinero writer of short eyes and actor in the film (who at several times in this podcast is accidentally referred to as Hugo Pinell a political prisoner. My apologies for the mix up) is the focus of a great documentary titled “pinero” which is also highly recommended. 

Also recommended is Actor Bruce Davidson’s interview on the blu ray edition as well as the audio commentary with director Robert young and Pinero director Leon Ichaso.
