  • Episode 49: Creator of Stunning (a Stripe add on) Richard Felix – Tech Success and Audience Reach

Web app developer of Stunning for Stripe, Richard Felix walks through the computer programmer life and how an audience matters. Learn about hiring, lessons to scale business, why Ruby on Rails and how solving your own problem can lead to success.
Starting in middle school he was already building computers for other people and once he started Louisiana State University he already learned 30 computer languages.
Listen to Learn why he says all students should learn Ruby on Rails as well as Swift for apple and iPhone developers.  Swift Playground is an iPad app where you can play with code and see in real time what changes. It’s a nice way to get immediate feedback on if your code is good or not.
What is the difference between a website versus a web application?
Learn about how he created a music exchange website which taught him many things and how he used that knowledge to build on new projects.
He scratched his own itch with Hngry.com because he and his now wife had the age old question: What genre of food to eat and then Where?  The web app conquered these questions and even got him flown out to NYC. Listen to find out more about this inspiring entrepreneurial story and why it eventually was shut down.
www.richardfelix.com is his portfolio of projects
Listen to hear how he fixed his marketing problem so that initial interest wouldn’t fade, why he partnered with better front end programmers (people who make the site pretty vs the code that makes the databases run correctly), csstricks.com and his relationship with Chris and more.
Aremysitesup.com  When you have a business that can lose money and sales when your website is broken because of some server issue, you want to know immediately (not 8 hours later) so you can fix it.  This site checks for you.  Learn how and why he co-developed this site.
How valuable is building trust and giving free information for building an audience AND an audience willing to pay for a service you offer.
Richard Felix greatest success is Stunning for Stripe credit card payments.  Again he solved his own problem when making it and now huge and small companies use it.  The gist is: you have either recurring payments or credit card of customers on file.  Stunning lets you know when someone’s card is 30 days till expiration, payment was denied for some reason and a few other options so you don’t lose customers OR keep customers who haven’t actually paid for the service.  Stunning also sends out emails letting people know about the expiration, email to the business about failed payments, chargebacks and also very customizable receipts along with web hooks that can trigger certain emails to let you know what’s going on.  All very easy to set up too.
Plus he talks about why use stripe vs a 3 tier PayPal system which has more headaches than you might want to deal with for recurring payments.  We chat a lot about Stripe and what it is used for, how it can help you and how stunning makes it even better for a business.
How do we find that One Thing that someone will say “ I”d rather pay you then figure it out on my own.”
Why did he hire someone for customer service? Did he wait to long? What was the number one quality he was looking for?  He even discusses team meeting for FAQ’s.
Mr. Felix gives talks and presentation especially about how to make money with recurring payments and web application development.  Also because of his building server experience and scaling to customers who have hundreds of thousands of clients, (creating workers) he has a unique skill set to talk about.
Why does he go to comic con and find Phoenix artwork so appealing?
As an African American Male Tech Guy, how has that affected his job prospects and con...

  • Episode 47: Dr Ebony Butler Lifestyle and Exercise Psychology, Food Blogger and Marketer

The unique perspective of the black community and psychology. We transition into exercise psychology, shifting mindsets to master food issues, and family roadblocks. Dr Ebony Butler developed paid workshops, food blogging, Live videos and more. What people are experiencing and What led to these behaviors and How to analyze these dynamics specifically in the black community? We don’t want to look like we are crazy, what goes on in your house-stays in your house and other ways that not only cultural but geographical differences affect our psychology.
Mistrust from the past keeps a lot of people from seeking the help that could occur.
When you go to methods of dealing with situations is failing you, where can you turn and is a psychologist an alternative in the black community?
She discusses the ins and outs of having a minority patient with a minority doctor and how / why that can be a hindrance for some clients to want to open up. You are an expert where you sit, I am an expert where I sit, and let’s bridge the two.
Growing up in a family that didn’t have a focus on health, combined with the undergrad lifestyle of eating what ever you want- she found herself tipping the scales despite having a gym membership. Dr. Butler made some changes during her masters and PhD program and accredits the major changes in health and weight loss to a distinctive mind shift.
This mind shift that Dr Butler achieved was the catalyst to helping her create an empire to help others. She has workshops, downloadable guides and of course counseling and coaching services to help others achieve their own health goals.
Much of what we discuss is that we have learned behaviors throughout life about healthy or non-healthy lifestyles so it takes a strong mindset shift to peel back the destructive and rebuild constructive paradigms. The destructive pathways could have been from sexual abuse, overeating over your feelings like stress or breakups and so much more.
We go deep into the difference s of a coach versus counselor relationships and how to bridge those murky lines. We address the burden of responsibility and legality that a coach vs PhD has as well. Being a Doctor and a counselor and a coach requires unique boundaries and regulations. Are we all coaches?
Dr. Ebony uses a term Skinny Fat and what she did to cut the sugar and why she is training for a bikini competition. Can you be so far removed from the daily struggle that you lose touch with what others are going through? She knows how to get rid of faulty thinking patterns.
Why is it that the ones we love most (family) are the ones that could end up sabotaging or wounding us when we do make great choices like portion control, exercising even after your skinny etc. She has a major focus on changing behaviors to lose weight by changing your perspective.
Things we remember most from bullied are the Words not the Actions against us.
When is a good time to revisit the Goals you have set for yourself? When is it ok to modify these goals and why would you?
When to hire a Virtual Assistant, Why, and Qualities to look for? Around minute 43 she talks about ways to integrate a class on social media into a grad school curriculum. We don’t learn marketing and we need to do that so we can prosper. We need to be heard and show off experience and go beyond theory only.
We both love Fiverr.com and she explains how she used it for converting a webinar to a book.
How going Live on social media skyrocketed her business and lessons learned during the 7 day a week Live sessions. The do’s and don’ts, topics covered as a psychologist, food therapy, exercise and nutrition were all topics she went Live about. She is a licensed psychotherapist and is Board Certified National Counselor and Clinical Mental Health Counselor and utilizes various therapeutic orientations to assist individuals in developing coping skills to overcome problem life areas.

Can counselors have their own quota and agendas that make it difficult for the client to reach their goals?
If changing counselors or starting for the first time, what are some questions to ask to gauge if the fit between the two of you will match?
Empowerment is her passion. She gives a great example about a suicidal or heavily depressed person and the outcome after a session.

Will marriage and a kid bring you together and make your issues resolve?
A very neat trend she is seeing: men are starting to see counselors about relationship without the stigma of ‘I’m crazy’ or ‘that’s not manly’.
Near the end you will be impressed by her hobbies.
When she gives talks to students that ‘Look Like Her’, she can see in their eyes that “Hey, she looks like me and has become a Doctor… maybe I can do that too”.
Yet again we hear, successful relationships are built on continual dating your spouse but she adds a Very Important Side Note (or 2) that you have to hear. HINT: airline oxygen masks
Do you think family, single friends, other couples or a counselor is the best place to ask or complain about your spouse? Who protects the relationship and who doesn’t?
We chat about fasting as well near the end.
