I talk with Thomas Andrillon about the characteristics of the semi-lucid period when we’re not quite asleep yet but also not fully awake anymore. He is a researcher at the Paris Brain Institute.

In the second half, I have Fabio Ferrarelli on to talk about what makes us lose consciousness when we fall asleep. He is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh.

Robert Stickgold is a professor at Harvard Medical School and director of the Center for Sleep and Cognition.

He authored and co-authored more than 400 papers, mostly on the nature and function of sleep and dreams, with an emphasis on the role of sleep and dreams in memory consolidation and integration.

Recently he wrote the book “When Brains Dream” together with Antonio Zadra.

Me and my classmates from school. I'm from Ukraine, so we have like the same classmates, like the whole 11 years of school. So we had like a final, um, photo shoot, like for the albums or something. And then we're like, we're shooting in the groups and it was like this beautiful place with flowers and everything.

So we with groups and then my group left. I was with my two friends and the rain started pouring. So it went on a tram. I don't know where. So we just went on a tram to another location, I guess. So while we were on a tram, there was like this huge picture of our like hat teacher in the tram. And you were like, yeah. Okay. This absolutely amazing. I love this tram. What's the number.

And then the music started playing in the tram and it was like some old, old song and everybody was jamming to it. The next second I remember is like, everything's like drained with rain. Like everything is drained with rain.

And I was like, yeah, we can do a pool party here. And my friend's like, amazing idea! We already have the music and there’s the picture. Let's do that. And we have like alcohol from nowhere. I'm like, love that. And it's while moving.

Then I woke up I'm like, girl.

So basically I came home one night and it was really late. And I walked into my house. I walked into the kitchen, but then the next room that I walked into instead of being my living room was a museum. Like, it was like the entrance to a museum. And there were like old Renaissance paintings on the wall, but this was completely normal to me. Like, I didn't think anything of it.

And then I saw my mom up on like this staircase, like on the balcony at the top of the staircase. And she waved at me and there was like a fountain below and like a whale with its mouth open and she jumped into the mouth of the whale. So then I walked up the staircase and I slid down the railing of the staircase into the whale’s mouth.

And then we were both inside the whale and there were a bunch of like little, like Seraphin, like little angels that they have. And, you know, there's like Renaissance paintings and they were like flying all around us. And at first they were really nice. But then they started chirping and like getting really loud and angry.

And it felt like that scene from the hunger games, where all of those tracker jackers are like attacking them. So then I remember we were just like hiding there together and they were like really, really overwhelming. And then I woke up.

And the weird thing about dreams is like the room that you're in, like keeps changing.

The same with people, I have people changing. Like, I went on a walk with someone, like with somebody. Yeah. So I end up with like, with, with you, for example, and I started with my sister for example, and nothing changed at the same walk. Yeah. And it's not weird. It’s normal. Absolutely fine. Like when I walked into the room, there was no whale.

And then I remember looking at my mom and turning and seeing the whale being like, yeah, that that's there. He’s supposed to be there. And then my mom jumped in the mouth and I was supposed to following her in. Makes perfect sense.

I was on this like a small planet and I was running around in circles. I couldn't get out. And always, I woke up sweaty. It was horrible for me as a kid. And I had the same dream, like a month in a row. It was horrible.

When you were on the planet, like how small was the planet? Like, I don't know, like, uh, yoga balloon.

Oh, it was really small. I was running and I couldn't get out. It was like the gravity was pulling me, so I couldn't jump off anything. That was horrible. And it was every night for like a month in a row. That was, I woke up 4:00 AM sweaty. I couldn't sleep. It was horrible.
