In this episode, Mom returns to discuss what will become a multi-part episode on Alternative Metal. The two best definitions for this genre are "Compromise for people for whom Nirvana was not heavy enough but Metallica was too heavy." (Houston Press) and "A style united by its nonconformist sensibility rather than any immediately classifiable sound."(Allmusic.com) So, this time, we listen to bands coming out of Seattle: Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. Some A sides, some B sides, and everything in between. Will Mom like it? Tune in to find out!

Revisiting Doom Metal by examining 4 core bands: Saint Vitus, Pagan Altar, Pentagram, and Count Raven. We had listened to Pentagram and Saint Vitus before, and Martin enjoyed some of their music way back when. Will mom also come around to enjoying the delights of doom metal? After over a year, we are back! Martin is still on hiatus, but Andrew returns with a special guest to discuss drone or ambient metal. We will examine the history beginning with Black Flag and Melvins and delve off into the feedback and hypnotic effects of drone metal!

Patrick returns and takes control of the helm. Similar to his previous visit, where we discussed electronic music and what constitutes "Heavy," this time we delve into jazz and it's various subgenres. Again, songs and artists are discussed on a metal podcast which would normally cause one to raise an eyebrow, but not A Fistful of Faceful. Here we break new ground! In this episode, we examine The Devil's Lettuce... some might say one of the main sources of inspiration and subject matter of many of the genres of Heavy Metal. In particular, we listen to songs or bands who use marijuana, or a pun of said substance, either in their name or song title. Culling from bands around the world, we listen to groups from Norway to North Carolina. In some cases, the songs consist of nothing but thick and crunchy riffs guaranteed to achieve a hypnotic effect. Other times, the songs possess a driving force coupled by powerfully sung lyrics. So, come along, and in the words of Sleep and their seminal track Dopesmoker: "Drop out of life, with bong in hand."

In this episode, Andrew does a solo podcast in which he talks about the music he listens to on the walk to work. While discussing various tracks and their genres he uses to psyche himself up for the workday, he also ruminates on Martin's current situation, making outrageous claims… whether Martin is safe in his abode in Hong Kong, listening to The Kooks, or perhaps participating in an illegal underground fighting tournament. Regardless, this episode introduces some new genres, crossover and power violence, as well as revisiting some old favorites. So, if you're in the mood for some Faulkneresque stream-of-consciousness, look no further!

In this episode, we welcome back Patrick! In our previous episode when he was a guest, we were introduced to some of his musical tastes, including: Deadmau5, Justice, and Skrillex. This time around, I thought it would be interesting to see if there was an approximate equivalent "Metal" which would compliment that genre of music. Hence: Industrial Metal. In this episode, we examine the influences coming out of the late 70's and early 80's with bands like Killing Joke. Ultimately, we talk about the two defining bands of the genre, NIN and Ministry. Along the way, anecdotes are offered, genres bent, and no tangent is safe. Tune and and enjoy as we delve into the realm of Industrial Metal!

THE RETURN OF MARTIN! Part of me wanted to simply have the description be comprised of the first sentence. However, I felt a little more was necessary. In this episode (part 1 of 2) we examine the progressive metal band Tool. While they were influenced by sludge metal act Melvins, amongst others, their sound was definitely influenced by progressive metal act King Crimson, which makes them the logical next step for the progressive metal arc. Questions abound of course: Why has Martin been absent? Will he like Tool? As we examine their first two full length albums, these questions and more will be answered!

In this episode, much like Martin before him, Patrick takes over at the controls. After laying down the groundwork for what constitutes "Heavy," he and Andrew listen to Electronic music to see if it fits with their agreed upon definition, as well as whether Metal has borrowed any elements or influences from this genre. Hopefully, new fans of this music are born from this episode, and for the second time, we'll see if Andrew comes around to a new type of music. Tune in and find out!

In this episode, we take a step back and ask the probing question, "What is heavy?" Throughout the previous twenty-four episodes, we discussed certain criteria for various sub genres of music, without ever exploring the nuances or the derivation of what it meant. Well, in this episode we pontificate the nature, and discern once and for all a definitive list, of what constitutes heavy. Joining Andrew today is a newcomer Patrick, who brings plenty of music knowledge to the table. So, tune in and enjoy as we get to the bottom of the pivotal question: What is heavy?
