It’s good to stop and contemplate just what God has done for you every once in a while. What you could not do for yourself, He did for you. It was impossible for you to make yourself right with Him. Nothing you could do could cleanse you from the sin embedded deep within your soul. You thought evil thoughts. You committed evil deeds. You bent toward evil all the time. Your selfish nature sprang out from everywhere. Nothing you could do could stop it because you inherited that trait from your parents from the time of Adam and Eve.

I wonder what happens to people’s brains to think that these objects made from their hands have any power in them. How can these pieces of wood, stone, silver, or gold molded into some image do them any good? Can sightless eyes see the trouble you have or the enemies you face? Can ears that do not hear understand the cries of your heart or hear your prayers as you plead for mercy or ask for grace in your times of trouble? Can a statue of wood or stone extend a tender heart and show compassion when you need it? 

Today, we say we have become more civil, though. We no longer have idols, but don’t we? Look around and see what has replaced God in our praise and worship. Sports fields fill with cries of praise instead of churches being filled with praise. We sit in front of screens for entertainment instead of reading His word and learning of God or building our relationship with Him. We walk past the hungry and the needy without thought of helping.

God created all humankind. He is the God of everyone and everything. Whether they want to believe it or not doesn’t matter, it’s still true. Christians and Jews will sometimes acknowledge they serve the same God, but too often exclude everyone else from their thought process and dismiss the rest of the world as unworthy of Him. But stop and look around. Who created them. Who will save them if not God? And who will introduce them to Him if not us? He is their God. But for many of them, He needs an introduction. They haven’t heard His story. They haven’t seen the evidence of His Spirit truly alive and at work in men and women sold out to Him. Will you do it?

Pharisaical Jews and Christians still spout their rhetoric about keeping the law today. You’d think after all this time they would realize you can’t keep it. God gave it to us to help us understand the boundaries of holy living. The things He wanted us to keep far from in your daily living. Instead, humankind saw His commands as an opportunity to try to stretch His grace and mercy. We try to stretch to see just how close we can get to the edge of the boundary without crossing it. Except most of the time, our foot slips and over we go, not just our toes, but foot leg, body and soul.

Unbelievers can say anything they like about God's word and the events that will come to pass recorded there. One day they will know the truth, just like His followers already know the truth. Don’t let false prophets or unbelievers deceive you. Just because He has withheld His wrath for many years to pour our His mercy and grace to allow as many as possible to seek and find Him, there is still a day coming when all will face judgment for the deeds they have done.

Somewhere along the line, many get the idea that society owes them something. Paul put the words down correctly when he told the church body in Thessalonica, “Anyone not willing to work shouldn’t get to eat!” God wants you to take care of those unable to work for themselves. He wants you to help the feeble, the sick, those who cannot work. But those who can, you do them no favors by your unbridled charity. Give them something to do so they may understand their usefulness to society.

God will answer your prayers. But you must also know that when your mouth says, “Give me wisdom.” But your heart says, “So I can gain wealth.” God knows your heart. It’s your heart, not your mouth, He listens to most. He cannot be deceived. He knows what is best for you, too. Often, wealth is not what you need. Remember His words when He walked with us in the flesh? “It’s harder for a rich man to make it into the kingdom than a camel to go through the eye of a needle.” You might not want to be rich after all. This world’s riches aren’t so great when you think about it in those terms.

Something David recognized that many today don’t, or at least act like they don’t, is that everything is God's. People hang on to things and hoard treasures like they belong to them instead of God. But everything is His. He allows you to take care of some things for Him for a little while, but in the end, everything belongs to Him. It’s all God's. From beginning to end, it’s all His.

If in your relationship with others you initiate every call, you send every card, you provide every gift, you make every move, how healthy is the relationship? If the relationship is that one-sided, is there a relationship? That’s why God wants you to seek Him. It’s not that He doesn't love you, He's already proven that in creation. He's already shown that by giving you breath. He's proven His love for you in His death on the cross. So show Him your side of the relationship by seeking Him with your heart.

Paul understood the truth of living a holy life. It means living life in a way the world doesn’t necessarily agree and clearly doesn’t understand. It means helping others. It means succeeding in the areas God thinks important; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. You know these as the fruit of the Spirit. They don’t grow unless His Spirit lives in and controls your life.
