David had every reason to despise the descendants of Saul. As king, Saul did everything he could to search David out and kill him. He put him in the hardest parts of the battlefield. He gave him impossible tasks that he felt sure would cause David’s death. Saul chased him across the countryside to put an end to him. And in the ancient world, sons carried on the feuds of their fathers, especially among royalty when thrones were threatened. Instead, David forgave Saul’s descendants.

Sometimes what seems good isn’t best and people will sacrifice what is best by doing good. Let me say that one more time so you’re sure to get it. Sometimes people will sacrifice what is best by doing good. It’s not that what you do is bad. Often what you attempt is good and will bring joy to yourself and others, but it might not be the best for you and those around you. It might not be what God wants you to do.

Long ago God told us not to make oaths and vows, but rather to just let your yes mean yes and your no mean no. But He also expects you to abide by your word in the same way He abides by His. Learn from the destruction of Israel because of their failure to live up to their promises to Him. It was their abandonment of the covenant between them that caused their nation to crumble under the enemies God allowed to come into their land. 

God will always keep His promises to you, but when you read His word, you’ll find most of His promises come with conditions. If you obey Him… If you follow Him… If you do His will… God's love is unconditional, His promises are not.

The lessons for you in David’s parade? First, when God give you directions, follow them. Not doing so carries grave consequences. Second, everyone has specific jobs to do. When you do yours, things go well. When you try to do someone else’s, things don’t go so well. Third, it’s okay to celebrate God's presence.

Sometimes people pour out their anger out on God like David did when God struck Uzzah dead for touching the covenant chest. That’s okay. He can take it. But when you do, stop and read the instruction manual. Take a look at His word and see if the instruction manual explains things before you stay angry too long. You might find, like David did, He's acting exactly like He said He would. He always keep His promises.

What fortress seems impossible for you to burst through? What enemy seems impossible to defeat? What mountain seems impossible to climb? Remember, God made the universe out of nothing. He makes oak trees out of acorns. He made you. He's in the business of doing the impossible. Your mountain fortress of problems is nothing to Him. Let Him help.

The new covenant gives those who follow Christ the opportunity to bless each individual in the world in the same way Abraham had opportunity to bless the nations of the world. And like with Abraham and the Israelites, He does not expect you to think yourself better or superior to others, but like when He walked with us, to be a servant to others. Show them His love. Love God and love others with all your whole being.

Peter and the people of Gennesaret understood faith. They understood it takes putting yourself in motion and doing something before real faith is exercised. Do you have faith in God? Show it with your actions. Just do something for Him. Stop talking and do something. That’s what Peter did. That’s what the people of Gennesaret did. That’s what you’ll need to do to demonstrate your faith to those around you.

I’m sure you’ve met each of the types of people described in the parable of the sower and the seeds sewn on rocky, thorny, and good soil. The question is which one are you? And the deeper question is can you change if you don’t like the answer to the first question. If you’re one of those who let the evil one snatch away any goodness that has been sown in your heart, there is still hope for you. God can change you if you let Him.

Had Saul kept his eyes focused on God and kept the commands He gave him. There is little doubt he would have been regarded as one of Israel’s greatest kings. As the first king, he established many precedents in how the kingdom would run. How kings would operate on a daily basis. How they should be viewed by the populace and by other nations. Saul did many things right.
