People who tell you they like inspections are probably lying to you. No one likes inspections. But inspections are sometimes important. Paul sent Timothy to inspect the church he began in Thessalonica. He gave them instructions before he left. He gave them God's word and left them procedures. He entrusted them with the treasure of the gospel and the objective of growing the church. He wanted to know if what he planted had grown. There was no better way to do so than to send someone back to check. That’s what an inspection does.

David did a foolish thing requesting a census of the fighting strength of Israel. He had God on his side and that was enough. Joab tried to tell him not to take the census. His other advisors tried to tell him his action was foolish, but he didn’t listen. He wanted to count his men. The price was a plague that swept across the country and killed thousands. David finally prayed to stop the plague when he saw God's slayer at Ornan’s threshing floor.

It’s easy to grumble about life and belly-ache about the way life treats you. But like David, every once in a while it’s important to just stop and count your blessings. Then remember where they come from. Remember all good things come from God. He likes to pour our good gifts on His children. He also likes you to stop and give thanks for them every once in a while.

What David does as he returns to Jerusalem from exile is worth noting. He remembers his friends. All those who helped him in his time of need, he rewards their kindness. They risked their lives for him and he didn’t forget. Some of the help was minor. Some major and dangerous. David remembered them all, however, and rewarded each one appropriately.

“Good Friday.” Good for all humankind. But what a horrible day for God. He gave up all the glory of heaven and walked with us for 33 years. He tried to teach us His ways. He tried to show us His love and guide us to a life based on a right relationship with Him. But He was misunderstood by so many, even those who were supposed to teach us about His love.

Today there is silence. God's stories don’t seem to get passed from generation to generation. Do we not see Him at work in our lives anymore? He's there. Are we ashamed of Him? Are we afraid? Are we embarrassed? What excuse to we give for not sharing the ways in which He aids us in life? How will our children know that He is God and our shelter when the storms of life come? Do we expect them to trust some preacher or us more? Where do we want them to go for answers to their problems? God or the world?

The rules haven’t changed. God gave you David’s story to teach you just how bad things can get. Look around, though, and you’ll find his example isn’t so extraordinary. The web sin weaves is always extensive. Today, the webs are just as complex and far reaching for each sin and each person as they were for David in his day. No sin goes unnoticed and no sin is executed without consequences. God forgives, but consequences can still follow. It pays to obey Him from the start and learn to walk in His ways... always.

Well, God told us a long time ago that He would begin to show us when the end would begin to unfold. When He walked with you in the flesh, His disciples asked Him when the Temple would be destroyed. He used their question to give a broader answer to the end of time using all the scriptures and His knowledge to give them a peek into the future. What we are experiencing are the birth pangs. Look at the signs and know that I can return in the blink of an eye. As He told His disciples 2,000 years ago, He tells us now. Be ready. You never know when He’ll be back.

Sin cannot be kept secret. Someone will find out. Just like the leaks you hear in the press about some sordid affair, some secret indiscretion, some unjust action, some shady deal, sin breaks out into the light and the consequences of those actions reap a harvest. God forgives when men and women come to Him in repentance and with a contrite heart. But the consequences of actions may still follow. The harvest comes.

Who has wisdom? Not those who think they do and try to flout their intellect as a badge trying to prove God doesn’t exist. Their circular arguments will always get them in trouble. Oh, they might match wits with other people and cloud their minds with their fancy words and high sounding education, but they will never have real wisdom until they learn to fear God. Remember, real wisdom begins with the fear of Him. He has the answers you need, not some college professor or some self-proclaimed wise man.
