I open this vlog by sharing some thoughts about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the state of the world today. Throughout, I mention my friend Eboni K. After talking about the serious subject of social justice, I transition to talk about my creative journey along with friends' of mine. Today is the day we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the important work he stood for. It's a very important and symbolic holiday. I say symbolic because the work of MLK is not complete. Which is why I invite you to go beyond posting a quote of his. Study his life and his teachings. You can watch a movie like Selma or read Why We Can't Wait. Or (re)watch any of his speeches, including "I Have a Dream". Really experience what his life and ideals were all about. Then consider how you too can continue his legacy in your daily actions.

I'm not sure about you, but it seems many people refuse to admit when they're wrong, much less apologize. Why? Who does it help? Not them, not anyone. So how do we normalize people saying they're wrong and saying they're sorry? It starts with ourselves. We must take individual responsibility. It's scary because it goes against the grain currently. But it's the only path forward. We cannot expect others to do something if we don't do it ourselves. That's my message in this episode. The language learning app likes to remind me it's about progress, not perfection whenever I get a series of prompts wrong. These three simple words are powerful when you consider them and more importantly apply them. It is about progress. There is no such thing as perfection, especially in art. The thought of perfection often stifles people with fear, thus inaction. Just keep progressing. You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish over time. That's what I discuss in this lesson. I'm beginning to recognize a pattern around me where people refer to adults in their 20s as kids or still young and innocent. Likewise, many adults in their 20s have bought into this narrative, whether knowingly or not. In the eyes of the law ignorance is no excuse and likewise, in the eyes of the law anyone over 18 is an adult. There is no difference legally between someone who is 19, 36, 57, or 84. So I'm advocating for personally responsibility and accountability for us to recognize anyone 18 or over, especially ourselves, as adults. That's what I discuss in this episode. There's an adage most writers have heard that says those who can't read can't write (or some variation therein). This applies to screenwriters too. One of my friends was doing everything from her bed: work, sleep, eating, watching TV, laying out outfits, etc. Then she started slipping into depression. Why? The answer is simple. There was no separation, no boundaries anywhere. Her body and mind were confused. "When do I sleep? When do I work?" Etc. Jay Shetty points out that we must have intention with time and space. Don't make the lines blurry. Have a defined place to work, to eat, to sleep and so on. Otherwise your mental health will suffer like my friend's. It is this notion that I explore here. Cinematographer Roger Deakins (1917, Blade Runner 2049, Shawshank Redemption, Sicario, No Country For Old Men) is regarded as one of best directors of photography around. Why? People say it's his visual aesthetic. And they're not wrong, but why they think that goes deeper. Roger shared his thoughts on this on an episode of Team Deakins where he said, "Actors are the key of what you're going for otherwise you just have a series of pictures." Therein lies the key. It is this notion that I unpack and how I apply it to my own work. More importantly, how you can too. Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist, has a notion that in today's culture we signal our intelligence by tearing down other's ideas but that in reality it doesn't take much intelligence to do this at all. You're actually way more intelligent if you help build up an idea. It is this notion that I explore in the episode and why it's significant especially as artists who aim to have abundant creativity.
