A Radical Guide sits down (virtually) with environmental activist, Jerry Palmer. Jerry Palmer recently wrote Buttons, Bolt Cutters & Barricades about the Texas Anti-Nuke actions that happened in the late 1970s through the early 80s. This book shares the first-hand stories of those who took a wide range of actions to stop parts of the nuclear industry.
Buttons, Bolt Cutters, & Barricades, Texas Anti-Nuke Actions, is a first-hand account of the historical actions taken in trying to stop or at least slow the construction of nuclear power plants in the United States and the Comanche Peak plant in particular. The strategical use of nonviolent direct action including civil disobedience by the Comanche Peak Life Force activists should be an inspiration to others in the fight for clean air, clean water, and safe renewable energy.
You can pick up a paperback copy of Buttons, Bolt Cutters & Barricades from A Radical Guide's Shop ( https://shop.radical-guide.com/product/buttons-bolt-cutters-and-barricades/ ), or if you want the hardcopy or just want to purchase the book directly from Jerry you can pick up a copy from his website, http://jerrypalmerauthor.com/
As governments and corporations fail to protect ordinary people from the ravages of the crisis, community networks are organizing their own communities around the principles of mutual aid, solidarity, and autonomous direct action. Their aim is solidarity not charity. Cooperation and interdependence, not competition. Learn from longtime mutual aid organizers on how to protect each other during coronavirus and how to build long-term, liberatory, and resilient communities beyond this pandemic and the death cult of capitalism and settler colonialism.
A Radical Guide has teamed up with PM Press, Between the Lines, Melville House, and Verso Books to bring you this #RADICALMAY live event. Contagion, Capitalism, and Resistance is a live conversation with Timothy Faust, L.A. Kauffman, Gary Kinsman, Peter Linebaugh, and OmiSoore Dryden.
Contagion, Capitalism, and Resistance While many have pointed to the similarities between the 1918 flu and the COVID-19 pandemic, there are many examples of past health crises that radicals might reflect on when trying to make sense of the current crisis. Most recently, the activist response to the HIV-AIDS crisis offers lessons for how activists might respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. When HIV-AIDS was used as way to divide people—by sexuality, race, gender, class, drug use, etc.—activists learned not to rely on a “public heath” system that protected only some of the public and deemed others expendable. Instead, they organized collective responses, including direct action and mutual aid projects, to protect communities from both the disease and the state response to the disease. What can we learn from past activist responses to health crises that will help us protect vulnerable communities and continue building resistance movements during COVID-19?
