Rapidly Rotating Records

A “‘Roger,’ Roger” Edition of RRR # 1,230 Feb. 11, 2024

Listen Later

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

This is the logo of the ICAO. “What in the world is the ICAO?” I hear you ask. The ICAO is the International Civil Aviation Organization.”. On November 1, 1951, the ICAO adopted its phonetic alphabet as a universal standard for communicating English letters over a phone or radio to lower the chance of miscommunication and increase operational safety in aviation. On last week’s show you heard songs representing the first three letters of the ICAO alphabet, Alpha, Bravo and Charlie for A, B and C. Well this week we’re going to continue reciting the ICAO alphabet. We won’t have time enough to get all the way through in this hour, but we’ll come pretty close and besides, I have no idea what record I could use for the letter X, represented by X-Ray. As it is, we’ll be going a bit outside our normal ’20s and ’30s timeline in a couple of cases, but there’s lots of great music and interesting information, so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. Think you know what tunes I’ll be playing for the various words representing letters in the phonetic alphabet? Click on the player above to listen streaming online and/or download for listening at your convenience.
