Kiran and I chat about growing up in Birmingham, the start of her research career, that pivotal moment when she quit her full-time HR job to focus on women in history, her families’ path from India to England and  the film project she is currently working with the help of the military.

What I did totally forget to discuss was her stint as an Olympic torch relay person representing England leading up to the 2012 Olympics.  But, everything else and so much more coming up.

The open road.

Windows down, music playing and the smells of the countryside.

Those are my earliest memories of road trips with my mom, my aunt and my cousin. Listen >>NOW<<

Some of the best memories of my life were those days packing up at a moments notice and going for a drive with my mom whether it was for the afternoon or the weekend.   The excitement that immediately kicked in and the sense of wonder as we explored backroads and different towns has never ceases to amaze me.

Marianne Dunavant, an accomplished victim’s rights advocate, felt called to her mission after her fiancée was murdered years ago. She has since served on the boards of prestigious child advocacy and domestic violence organizations, as well as, numerous community groups and charitable organizations. She has also been named one of the Top Twenty Most Influential Women of West Tennessee and was named one of the Best of the Best community activists by the readers of the Covington Leader newspaper, Covington, Tennessee.

Stephanie and I chat about growing up in a family of engineers, the scarcity of girls, especially minorities in STEM, and how she juggles being a mom and a business owner.  We discuss her mom and grandmother’s influence, as well as, the 44 incredible STEM women she has interviewed in her book STEM Gems.

In today’s episode, I’m sharing a story about the 1914 World Welterweight Boxing Champion, Perry “Ivan” Graves. Graves was born July 11, 1892 in Rock Bluff, Nebraska and died at the age of 71 on July 24, 1963 in Rock Bluff, Nebraska.  Listen in >>HERE<< as I share the limited history we have of this man and a bit of the background of the once thriving town of Rock Bluff Nebraska.

Graves served as a volunteer instructor on a dollar a year basis during WWI and was considered to the rank of First Lieutenant. He saw service in Alaska and Mexico and during WWII, he worked at the Martin Plant.  [The Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant (also known as Air Force Plant 1) was an aircraft manufacturing facility in the central United States, located at Offutt Field, Nebraska, south of Omaha. Adjacent to suburban Bellevue in Sarpy County, the plant was operational during World War II, from 1942 to 1945.]

Graves is also said to have been a Police Magistrate in Plattsmouth, Nebraska.  In his spare time, he also played the violin. His having been made by his father, Alvin Sherad Graves. 

Many of Graves’ earlier reported fights took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, while the later career fights were fought in Brooklyn, NY. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and of the First Christian Church.  Graves married Kathryn T. Brosman Aug 1913, in Yakima, Washington. Kathryn was born Sep 9, 1892, in Brooklyn, NY and she died Feb 12, 1975.

Graves stood 5’ ft 7” inches, and weighed between 125-to-152 pounds during his 15-year professional career, which began in 1910.  Graves was a fast and clever boxer, who knew how to use the ring and was a fast and sharp puncher.

Perry Graves is buried at the Rock Bluff Cemetery, Rock Bluff, Nebraska.

Beginning in 1986, Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) went on an incredible run with 8 consecutive national titles in the sport of Handball.  All led by famed Coach Charlie Mazzone.
