  • America's superspreading holiday
Joe Biden will inherit a public health crisis beyond any US President's experience when he takes office on January 20th.
At the moment, there are up to 180,000 new COVID-19 infections recorded every day, and many ICUs and morgues are overwhelmed.
Holiday season, starting with Thanksgiving, is about to pour fuel on that fire, with very few restrictions on movement being enforced.
So in the dying days of the Trump presidency, how bad could the pandemic get?
And what can Joe Biden realistically do to turn it around?

  • Why delivery apps are deadly
Since September, five delivery riders have died on the job in Australia, and none of their families has been entitled to compensation.
These apps have been around for years now. So why has nothing changed?
Today on The Signal, the underclass of foreign workers responding to Australia's dinner whims.
Why doesn't our legal system offer them better protections?

  • Australia's place in the vaccine queue
More and more COVID-19 vaccines are returning their clinical results, and it's good news.
The latest development came from the Oxford University trial with pharmaceutical company Astrazeneca, which was found to be 70% effective in participants, although that figure rose to 90% when the vaccine was administered in a different dose.
It comes hot on the heels of two other vaccine candidates returning preliminary results of 95% efficacy earlier in November.
In fact the recent results have been so promising the US, the UK and Germany are weeks away from starting to roll out vaccines to the public.
So what's the hold up in Australia?
Today on The Signal, Australia's place in the vaccine queue.
And how will the rollout go when it does happen?
    Featured:
Professor Terry Nolan, Head of the Vaccine and Immunisation Research Group, Peter Doherty Institute, University of Melbourne

  • Australia's back road to net zero
More and more countries are signing up to a net zero emissions target.
China, Japan and South Korea have all committed in just the past few months, while US President-elect Joe Biden will follow suit next year.
But Australia is still holding out, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison saying he won't promise a neutral emissions target by 2050 until the economic cost is clear.
    So does that matter?
Or will the states, territories and private sector get Australia there anyway?

  • Prosecuting Australian war criminals
The horrific revelation that Australian soldiers in Afghanistan murdered 39 people in cold blood is a moment of national reckoning.
But really, it's just the beginning.
Today on The Signal, as Australia begins the difficult task of staring down war crimes committed in its name, the wheels are starting to turn for the accused.
So what will justice look like when it arrives?

  • Locking down South Australia
We've seen coronavirus lockdowns before, but this one is different.
For six days, the entire state of South Australia is under tight restrictions to buy authorities time to trace and contain a COVID-19 cluster that's spreading across Adelaide's suburbs.
They're the toughest statewide measures we've ever had in Australia, and if the lockdown all goes to plan it could be the shortest too.
So can the state pull this off?
Or will the virus spread out of control and kill Christmas?

Adrian Esterman, Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, University of South Australia

  • Bracing for some "brutal truths"
Most of us don't have a clear picture of what Australia's special forces do when they're on a deployment.
In some ways, that's the whole idea, because secrecy comes with the territory.
But some of those secrets are about to get a very public airing.
Today on The Signal, the war crimes report Australia is bracing for.
How did we get here, and what comes next?
    Featured:
Mark Willacy, Reporter, ABC Investigations Unit

  • Has Adelaide's COVID luck run out?
South Australia was having a charmed run against COVID-19, but on Sunday that changed.
Six weeks out from Christmas, a cluster is growing in the northern suburbs of Adelaide, with hundreds of people already in precautionary quarantine.
Family reunions have been cancelled, summer plans are in disarray, and 1.7 million South Australians are adjusting to new rules introduced last night.
So how did this happen? And how bad could it get?

Tory Shepherd, Adelaide-based freelance journalist and columnist

  • Is Donald Trump staging a coup?
Donald Trump's reaction to his election loss has people dropping the c-bomb.
It's been clear for more than a week that he lost the US election, but he still hasn’t acknowledged the fact.
On the contrary, he's actively denying it.
And he's doing some things that a President who's just lost an election, would never normally do.
He's fired a handful of top defence and intelligence officials and replaced them with loyalists.
It’s prompted speculation there's a coup of sorts in the works.
Today on The Signal, we're covering Donald Trump’s reaction to losing so far.
Is it a serious attempt to hang on to power? Or something else altogether?

Kim Hoggard, Non-resident Fellow, US Studies Centre, University of Sydney & former senior official, Reagan Administration & Bush Snr Administration

  • Leaving Afghanistan behind
While we were all watching the US election, a terrorist attack in Kabul killed 35 people.
It's just the latest attack in the country and the violence is escalating.
So why does Donald Trump want to pull out US troops?
And if troops left, what would that mean for the Afghan people?
