  • Who’s first in line for a COVID-19 vaccine?
As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, a lot of attention is focussed on vaccine development.
Preliminary results out of Oxford and China look promising, while this week Russia said it would begin mass production of a vaccine, even though the World Health Organisation thinks it's too soon.
But when or if a vaccine is approved and ready, how is it going to be handed out?
Today on The Signal, we ask which places and people are first in line, and who'll miss out altogether.
    Featured:
Ana Santos Rutschman, Assistant Professor of Law, Saint Louis University

  • Has Europe given up on containing COVID-19?
Victoria is closing down, as Europe and the UK are largely open, in many places.
That's despite the fact that the caseload is still much higher there.
So why is there such a big policy gap?
Today on The Signal, we try to understand the chasm between Australia's current pandemic policies and the responses throughout much of the UK and Europe.
Is it possible that a lack of optimism in those places is to blame?
    Featured:
Neil Pearce, Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
    Hugo, holidaymaker in Europe

  • Five stages of life in lockdown
The second lockdown in Victoria is harder than the first.
People are angry this is happening, scared about how long it might last, and worried about the long-term effects on everyone and everything around them.
So what have we learnt since last time about coping with lockdown?
And is what we're going through essentially the five stages of grief and loss?
Today on The Signal, we look for the dim light at the end of the tunnel marked stage 3 and stage 4.
How do you keep sight of it? And if you're outside Victoria, how can you help?
    Featured:
Professor Jayashri Kulkarni, Director, Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre, Monash University, Melbourne

  • How Trump could fight an election loss
Donald Trump has been backsliding in the polls for months, but there are more signs with each passing week that he's unlikely to go down without a fight.
So what are the ways, legitimate and otherwise, that the outcome of the election could be challenged by either Donald Trump or Joe Biden?
And what happens next if one of them does?
Today on The Signal, it's America's looming legitimacy crisis.
    Featuring:
Dr Emma Shortis, Research Fellow, Social and Global Studies Centre, RMIT University

  • How 5G and COVID-19 conspiracies merged
Conspiracy theories about 5G have been around for years now.
But since the start of the pandemic, a new one has emerged, and it's spread like wildfire: that 5G technology either started or has helped to spread COVID-19.
Today on The Signal we explore the shady origins of the latest 5G conspiracy theory.
We ask where this misinformation came from, and who benefits from its spread.
    Featured:
Sean Nicholls, Reporter, ABC TV 4 Corners
Michael Lyon, Greens councillor, Byron Shire
Naomi Cook, Spokeswoman, Australians for Safe Technology
Paul Fletcher, Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts
Axel Bruns, Professor, Digital Media Research Centre, Queensland University of Technology

  • Is Melbourne's lockdown a failure?
Melburnians have been living under Stage 3 restrictions for more than three weeks.
Pubs, cafes and gyms are closed, hosting friends or family at home is forbidden, and someone even copped a $1,600 fine for driving across town to pick up a curry.
Today, new restrictions are coming into place west of Melbourne, in Geelong and on the Great Ocean Road, while from next week mask-wearing in public will be mandatory across Victoria.
So why, despite all the new rules, is the daily COVID-19 case count still rising?
Today on The Signal we ask why the situation in Victoria seems to be getting worse, and comb through the data to see if there are successes hidden amid the gloom.
    Featured:
Professor Catherine Bennett, Chair in Epidemiology, Deakin University, Melbourne
    17 min
  • How criminal can a 10-year-old be?
It's still possible to be arrested and charged with a crime at the age of 10 in Australia.
There's been a sustained campaign to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 14, in line with the average across Europe, but Australian political leaders want to see more evidence and more options first.
Today on the Signal we ask what it's like to be a kid in prison.
How did the law come to be this way? And what does the science have to say about how children think at that age?
    Featured:
Dr Mick Creati, Paediatrician and Senior Fellow at the Royal Australasian College of Physicians
Professor Chris Cuneen, Criminologist, University of Technology Sydney
    Keenan Mundine, Co-founder, Deadly Connections

  • Are we in for another Black Summer?
This time last year, one of the worst bushfire seasons ever seen in Australia was just getting started.
The so-called "Black Summer" fires of 2019-2020 claimed 33 lives, burnt through at least 12 million hectares, and killed or displaced almost 3 billion koalas, kangaroos and other animals.
The big question is: will this summer be a repeat.
Today on The Signal, the science of bushfire prediction.
What do the forecasts say? How much faith should we place in them? And are we doing enough to prevent more horrors in future?
    Featured:
Dr Richard Thornton, CEO, Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre, Melbourne

  • Locking up terrorists indefinitely
One of Australia's most notorious terrorist prisoners could be held in detention even after he finishes his term later this year.
In 2008, Abdul Nacer Benbrika was jailed for 12 years after he was found to have been the spiritual leader of a terror cell that was plotting attacks in Australia.
This November, he will have done his time, but authorities are considering whether it's safe to release him.
Today on The Signal, we dig into the debate around prolonging a convicted criminal's sentence beyond its end date.
What does the law allow? Can it be justified?
    Featured:
    Dan Oakes, Reporter, ABC Investigations
Peter Moroney, Former Detective Sergeant, NSW Police
Dr Clarke Jones, Senior Research Fellow, Research School of Psychology, Australian National University

  • Donald Trump's anti-BLM surge
In some US cities, Black Lives Matter rallies haven't just persisted. They've escalated.
Earlier this month, Donald Trump sent federal law enforcement officers to Portland, and he's considering doing the same elsewhere.
The rationale is that agents will protect federal property in the city, such as courthouses.
But since the deployment, the officers have ended up in violent confrontations with protesters, leading to concerns that their presence is having the perverse effect of escalating the situation.
So what’s driving each side? And where will it end?
