  • Could the US ban abortion?
Conservatives are on the brink of a huge win in America's decades-long abortion rights war.
Bolder and bolder laws restricting abortion rights have been passed by many states, including Alabama, which last week banned abortion outright, even in cases of rape and incest.
Some of those laws, including Alabama's, are designed to be challenged in the hopes they'll rise to the Supreme Court, where a conservative majority could overturn Roe v Wade.
So far the tactic has been working out, and national abortion rights in the US are on the line.
So how's it going to play out?
    Featured:
Dr Prudence Flowers, US history and abortion law expert, Flinders University
Chas Licciardello, host of the ABC’s Planet America

  • Make polling great again
Call it a miracle or a nasty shock, but almost no-one saw the election result coming.
So how did the polls fail to predict the Coalition's victory?
It's just the latest in a string of polling failures globally, including the failure to predict Donald Trump's victory in the 2016 US Presidential election, and the outcome of the Brexit vote.
But Australian polls, at least at a federal level, had been relatively reliable. Until now.
So what's changed? Can the problem be fixed? And what are the consequences if it can't?
    Featured:
    Annabel Crabb, ABC political journalist
Dr Kevin Bonham, independent polling analyst

  • You let who in?
It's the day before the election, and it's emerged that Australia secretly agreed to take in two accused murderers as part of its 2016 US refugee swap deal.
US news site Politico has revealed that two Rwandan men, accused of bludgeoning American tourists to death in Uganda in 1999, were resettled in Australia in November.
It's difficult to explain for a Government that's staked a large part of its reputation on a hardline refugee policy.
So could it lose the Coalition seats in the election? And what else don’t we know about the deal?
    Featured:
Josh Gerstein, Senior Legal Affairs Reporter, Politico
    Andrew Probyn, ABC Political Editor

  • Why first home buyers can't win
The major parties say they want to help first home buyers, but what are they actually doing about it?
The Coalition has announced a plan to help first home buyers into the property market by lowering the minimum deposit from 20% to 5%.
Labor matched their promise pretty much straight away, which means no matter who wins the election, it’s probably happening.
    But will it work?
Successive governments have failed to make a dent in the problem of housing affordability. So what are they doing wrong? And is the problem even fixable?
    Featured:
    Brendan Coates, Fellow, Grattan Institute

  • Can you fix a paedophile?
A shockingly high proportion of the adult population experiences some level of sexual attraction to children.
So if we're serious about preventing abuse, why aren't there more treatment programs?
In Australia, paedophiles who want help not to offend against children have very few places to turn.
But a program in Germany called The Dunkelfeld Project has treated thousands of men.
    So does it actually work?
    Featured:
Dr Kelly Richards, Criminologist, Queensland University of Technology
Maximilian von Heyden, spokesman, The Dunkelfeld Project
    'Max Webber', anonymous celibate paedophile

  • Is NewsCorp on the ropes?
It's not exactly news to say the Rupert Murdoch's media empire has a conservative tilt, but lately it's faced some pushback.
Just last week the Labor leader Bill Shorten called out the Daily Telegraph over what he saw as an unfair attack on his mother, and his honesty in telling her story.
Politicians, members of the public, and even some of NewsCorp's own journalists got in line behind him, to say they thought it was over the top.
So how big a deal is that?
Could this be a sign that NewsCorp's power is starting to fade? Or is it just a blip?
    Featured:
Richard Cooke, contributing editor, The Monthly
Dr Denis Muller, Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Advancing Journalism, University of Melbourne, and former Fairfax Journalist

  • The truth about paedophilia
It’s scary to learn, but sexual attraction to children is a lot more common than most people realise.
Not everyone with that problem will meet with the clinical definition for paedophilia, but the attraction is there nevertheless.
So what separates a would-be abuser from an abuser?
Today’s episode is part one of a two part special where we speak to three men who say they’ve never offended but struggle with the attraction they feel towards children.
We also ask an expert about exactly how common attraction to children is, and what it is that makes people more likely to act on it.
    Featured:
Dr Kelly Richards, Criminologist, Queensland University of Technology
    Anonymous celibate paedophiles

  • The Clive Palmer you don't know
On the off chance you hadn’t noticed, Clive Palmer is trying to make a political comeback.
He's a man with a long and strange CV and today's episode includes all the things about him you’ve either forgotten or maybe never knew to begin with.
How does someone live that many lives in public? And why is he so desperate to be a politician?
    Featured:
Sean Parnell, author of The Clive Palmer Story
Paul Karp, political reporter, Guardian Australia

  • Are we due for a super flu?
Flu season is here, and it's a bad one.
A 15-year-old boy with no pre-existing medical conditions has died from the flu in South Australia, and there have already been about 40,000 confirmed cases.
Even so, this year's flu is only a minor mutation on previous years. It's the major mutations that worry scientists.
So given it's been a while since the last one, are we due?
And more importantly, are we ready?
    Featured:
Professor Bill Rawlinson, Senior Medical Virologist, NSW Health Pathology

  • Not all women are created equal
Olympic Champion, runner Caster Semenya isn't allowed to compete at a professional level anymore because of how high her testosterone levels are.
She has a medical condition known as hyperandrogenism, and it's more common than you think.
In fact, experts say it’s possible to have it, and go through life oblivious to the fact.
So what causes it, and what are the effects, good and bad?
We unpack the deeply misunderstood condition of hyperandrogenism, in all its glory.
    Featured:
Professor Andrew Sinclair, Deputy Director, Murdoch Children's Research Institute
