U-S President Donald Trump has given a speech at the National Mall in Washington D-C to mark the 250th anniversary of America's independence.

The event was almost called off amid very hot weather and the threat of thunderstorms.

Mr Trump has heaped praise on the United States and again railed against communism, after earlier using a speech in South Dakota to kick off the celebrations to warn of what he called the "communist menace".

He's told the crowd America will always be free.

The New South Wales government is advising poultry and egg farmers to house their livestock to prevent contact with wild birds, after the state confirmed its first case of H5-N1 bird flu last night.

While one case has been reported, the government says industries have been preparing for the virus for years, after numerous outbreaks overseas.

It's the sixth case of the virus confirmed in Australia.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has taken aim at the Coalition and One Nation in a speech to the New South Wales Labor conference.

Yesterday, the state's Premier Chris Minns acknowledged the threat of One Nation and told delegates the party needed to 'climb Everest' ahead of next year's state election.

The Prime Minister will fly to Fiji this morning as he kicks off a busy week of regional diplomacy.  

Mr Albanese will fly straight to Fiji's capital Suva, where he's set to sign a major new treaty, before making a brief stop off in Solomon Islands on Tuesday.

After that he'll return to Australia for meetings with other Pacific leaders – including PNG Prime Minister James Marape.

Opposition frontbencher Dan Tehan says the Liberals are 'not entertaining' the idea of forming a Coalition with One Nation.

Mr Tehan has responded to questions about the prospect of joining forces with the right wing party following a surge in its popularity and the Liberal party's record-low polling.

He says the Liberals will only remain in an existing coalition with the Nationals.
