The melanoma expert was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in 2023, and chose to treat it with the same revolutionary immunotherapy he and a colleague had used to transform melanoma survival rates.

Professor Scolyer and Georgina Long were jointly named Australian of the Year in 2024 for their work, but his tumour returned early last year.

Hundreds of Australians have been named in this year's King's Birthday Honours, recognising exceptional contributions to Australia.
