Today we drop the third episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we’ll be discussing the beautiful and complicated (or is she?) Serena Joy Waterford on The Handmaid’s Tale television show on Hulu.
The show has given us so much of Serena’s story over its 5 seasons, including flashbacks from before Gilead, and even how Serena might act if given the option of a free life in Canada. We really enjoyed discussing it all, as well as the many different favorable and unfavorable traits of her character.

We got to know Nick as a driver for the Waterford’s long before he was promoted to Commander in Season 3 - and to us he’s primarily June’s friend, lover, and father to their baby Holly/Nichole. There are a lot of complications the show has thrown at him, attempting to prevent him from focusing on those roles that are most important to him, but his heart at least never seems to falter from its ride or die love for June.

The story uses three familiar female narrators to tell the tale of the future of Gilead, with the brunt of the events being set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Thirty two years later, Bruce Miller released Season One of The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, also to immediate critical acclaim. In addition to its 8 Emmy wins for Season One (from 13 nominations), it became the first drama series on a streaming service to win an Emmy for Outstanding Series. It has continued to collect various award nominations over the next four seasons, and a massive fan base.

And we imagine you’ll enjoy hearing about Nina’s enduring relationships with her Handmaids co-stars outside of work as much as we did!
