The things that happen to us in our childhood aren’t just buried and forgotten forever. Our childhood experiences are crucial to our emotional development and wellbeing. The adult figures in our lives during our childhood are our primary attachment and play an important role in how we experience life, because they lay a foundation of what the word is going to look like for us.
On this episode of the Abundantly Clear podcast, Malorie digs into how our childhood experiences are reflected in our adult life patterns, the behaviors we’ve carried from our childhood into our adult life, and why we need to create a new belief that works if whatever was modeled to us does not. Tune in to find out if it's high time you created a new belief about what you believe in.

Trauma doesn't necessarily mean that it was that vision, that painted a picture of something horrific happening, like losing a family member or losing a parent or going through a divorce or being raised in a house that abuse was common. Trauma can also mean being dismissed, and not being loved and not being shown attention or affection or emotional support. Trauma can also mean being praised for everything that you did that was good and creating beliefs about who you are, that you are somebody that achieves things. So that is the only way that you feel worthy. Trauma shows up in so many different ways.

Fear is a powerful emotion that has paralyzed and prevented many from achieving their goals. Can you imagine all those opportunities that one would miss if they chose to live in the prison of fear their entire life?
For over 30 years, fear drove Patrick Sweeney’s choices and actions, making him miss out on a number of amazing opportunities that life presented him. It is after contracting a rare form of leukemia that Patric realized his courage was a super-power. He decided that if he beat the disease he’d get over his biggest fear, flying. He now flies a stunt plane in aerobatic competitions. It is one of the greatest joys in his life, a true passion that was hidden from him because of fear. He is the founder and CEO of four technology companies, holds seven patents, produced award-winning adventure documentary films, and is an agile investor in over 30 start-ups. He, however, chose to leave all these behind; to write Fear is Fuel and help millions of people find the courage and the life of their dreams.
In this episode, Patrick talks about some of the life-changing decisions he made, how he replaced judgment with curiosity, and how changing the way of thinking and decision making is particularly relevant to today’s leaders. Tune in to learn how you can find and understand your hidden fears, and confront them to achieve peak performance.

I could see, for the first time, the difference between people who were putting limits on what they could achieve, and where their life could go, because they were afraid of not being the authentic version of themselves. And those were the relationships that I had to have the courage to say goodbye to.

“When you let fear dictate your every move, you will not branch and create new things and allow the business to grow as well. And you were designed to solve problems. You were designed to figure things out, you were designed to constantly have 1000-piece puzzles put in front of you over and over and over again and put them together.”

“As an entrepreneur, you are - I have this friend who said, ‘If you had a golden goose that actually laid golden eggs, would you march it up and down the square in the rain until it was exhausted and not let it rest and not give it good food and not let it do anything fun?” You as a leader, you are that golden goose. You have a responsibility to take care of yourself and not be exhausted and know the difference between good hustle and bad hustle and when to give yourself a break. It's super important.”

“Every defined goal that you set is an extrinsic motivator, and it can be backed by an intrinsic purpose. It's not that these two are mutually exclusive. The question is, are you allowing and looking at both to be part of your reality and part of your business and the culture that you're creating?”

As a busy entrepreneur, you probably have a pretty set routine, right? When was the last time you sat back and looked at where you're actually headed, and why you want to get there?
Elijah started his entrepreneurial journey as a freshman in high school by buying misspelled "macboks" and "ipoods" on eBay and flipping them for profit. Over the next decade, Elijah hit all the startup clichés–self-taught programmer, college dropout, co-founder of a Silicon Valley startup, and even lived on a sailboat for a year. Elijah left San Francisco for New York City to co-found his new venture, Matter, a software product studio blending in-house startup incubation with product, design and engineering innovation. His latest project, Grit List, is a 10-year commitment to write personal growth stories every week.
On this episode of the Abundantly Clear podcast, Malorie and Elijah jam on achieving fulfillment through healthy, balanced struggle, thriving in an entrepreneurial environment made up of multiple engaging projects, and ditching our common obsession with reaching the outcome. Listen in to reinvigorate the inspiration that made you do what you do in the first place.

“The creation part is what is so alluring to entrepreneurship, and freedom, right? And if you end up building something that's working and everything's going forward, then you don't really need to create more. And you're kind of structured in that - let's keep doing what's working and maybe improve it. But if that kills your soul, then that's not right for you. Maybe you need to build multiple things and kind of move on and move through stages, you're the early-stage person. Just do what you love and then go on to the next thing.”

“There truly is an energetic nature to all of this. It's mindset, it's action. Of course, you don't just meditate your way to a successful business… but 80% of the "success" for me has come from shifting things internally. And that's why it's been, you don't do that without things that push you to do that. I think that's why it's a big personal development journey.”

“You know, business owners have a big advantage of being able to fade away and phase out and do consulting and, you know, whatever they do to continue to cause trouble, but people who are in corporate America - almost to a person - the ones who struggle the most are the ones who like their job, because the ones who hate their job actually have an easier time not looking back. The ones that like their job but it's just kind of time and they're getting tired; they struggle a lot. So, this can also apply to really anybody who's approaching a major change in their life.”
