Growing older has its own challenges and one of them is staying in the race and completing it. So it’s helpful to remember that God’s will at the end of life is as a critical as the beginning. In our study of the life of David we’ve come now to his last days. And in First Kings chapter one we learn that one of David’s son, Adonijah takes advantage of his father’s frail condition. Sadly it’s not an uncommon problem for family members today. But David despite his weakened state seeks to fulfill his responsibility. Through it all God has His back, and He has our too.

And of course the very best thing we can do for each and everyone in this world is to live the gospel and give them the gospel. But there’s a cost involved and on today’s According to the Scriptures we’ll discover just how much. If you we’re with us last time you’ll remember we introduced you to David’s mighty men. The cost they we’re willing to pay to defend and advance the kingdom of God is truly inspiring.

Once we become a Christian we quickly learn God has a calling, and a work for us to do in this world. And as it’s been very well said, “God’s will is not given to us for our approval but our acceptance.” So it’s incumbent upon us not to confuse the two, but instead be honored and inspired that God would entrust us with His call. We’ll meet you in Second Samuel 23 as we continue our study of the life of David! The mighty men that served with him will inspire us.

We get back into our study in the life of David and we’ll be reminded that there’s a cost in doing what’s right. And in our day doing what’s right is increasingly difficult in light of our moral climate. The pressure to conform or suffer the consequences is very real. How do we resist and do what’s right regardless of the pushback? That’s where the fear of the Lord comes in and David is a great example for us to follow.
