This was an incredibly rich exploration of identify, courage, awareness, power, systems, fear, diversity, equity and inclusion, and above all a reminder as to our share humanity.
This does not, however, discount the critical importance of folk that look like me doing our intentional part to turn around the out of date, archaic and patriarchal systems that actually promote mediocrity and not the meritocracy that so many wish to espouse.
“When I talk about work like this, it’s a lot of looking in the mirror, which is what a lot of DEI work is, in order for us to be really aware of our own biases. I have to be able to look myself in the mirror and ask myself why I have those biases”
“I think its super important to be open and listening to peoples experiences. If the person is open to telling you about their story, listen to it, because that will give you a deeper insight as to why they identify a certain way” Reese Byrne
“The reason that some people aren’t going to cling onto the idea of dismantling white supremacy is because it is protecting their mediocrity. They know that if they had the same opportunities as those that were better than them, it would now impact their livelihood” – Madison Butler
“I think a lot of companies want to talk about it, but they don’t want to do the work that you have to do in order for real change to happen and that goes back to what I spoke about at the beginning of the podcast.
"None of us want to admit that we hired a bunch of people who were exactly like us because that’s what makes us comfortable”
“When I think about how much better products would be if we built products that worked for everyone and the way you build a product that works for everyone, is you have everyone’s perspective at the table”
