This week's episode is in keeping with our monthly theme of entertainment and is all about the first form of entertainment in Cook County...funny stories.
We will talk to my aunt Laquetta about our family's tradition of telling stories half the night, our strange friends and relatives like Cecil and Nina Hill, scaring small children with ghost stories...and my cousin named Papersack. (I'm NOT kidding).
An interview with 94-year-old Roy D White of Adel. His life as a sharecropper, farmer and Deacon.
Lots of you have had questions about the podcast, and today I'm sitting down to answer them for you.
We love our listeners, and are glad to answer any questions you may have. We'd also like to hear from you on the podcast. Contact us today!
An interview with Chet Powell, whose family has been involved with Reed Bingham State Park since the park's beginning. His father was the first park manager and his mother designed the playground. He'll tell us some of the history of the park and what he'd like to see for its future.
This week’s episode continues our theme of religion in Cook County with an interview with Margaret Conger Giddens…daughter of an old time preacher…and a gospel singer for a long time…who became a preacher herself at a fish market she owned with her husband...
This is the first of our weekly episodes.
Talmadge Folsom was born and raised here in Cook County and is an elder of Springhead Baptist Church. In this episode, he tells us some of his memories of growing up in Springhead and talks a little about a special gift he uses to help others.
Enjoy!
A while back, I got handed a piece of paper with an article from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
It was written by a Yankee newspaperman named Ray Sprigle. Whom I have never heard of…
And it was about a black farmer here in Cook County named David Jackson…whom I also had never heard of…
The article was about how Mr. Jackson owned and farmed nearly 1000 acres of land here. How he had been penniless just 20 years before. But how now he owned stock in a newly formed bank here in town. And several commercial buildings and properties throughout Adel.
All of that is remarkable enough for ANY man really…I can’t name a handful of men that can make those same claims…that have accomplished that much in their lives.
BUT…, when I saw the date of the story was 1948…the height of Jim Crow….and segregation…and before the civil rights movement had faced its first real battle…
I was floored...and began digging...
This month it's all about Agriculture on the podcast. We talk about some of the crops grown here and their role in history.
Then we have a conversation with Shell Trippe...who tells us all about being the son of a tobacco farmer and working in the fields.
We follow that up with someone still in the farming game, and what they're doing to combat some of the changes they've faced the past few years.
And we wind it up, with a local celebrity of sorts, Ms. Linder Miller...singing at the recent Black History Month lecture put on by the Historical Society and the Centennial Committee.
We've got an interview with Mayor Duke about the History of the Adel Ice House, plus an interview with a lovely couple who've been MARRIED MORE THAN 70 YEARS! We also will turn some of our attention on the oldest Business in Cook County, the Adel News!
Find it on Stitcher, iTunes, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

The first ever episode is about how the county was formed out of Berrien County, and what it took to make it happen.
Plus conversations on conservation with the ladies of the Cook County Historical Society.
