  • From Accounting to Forrest Fire Fighting to Staff Adjuster, James Corey Shares His Journey

James Corey’s career initially began as a staff accountant after graduating from college. After working in the accounting field for about two years, he quickly realized his dream was not crunching numbers and decided to pivot his career to a more exciting - and dangerous - role as a forest firefighter with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). After fighting fires for a number of years, he decided to pivot his career again to become a staff insurance adjuster with the American Modern Insurance Group.

James joins me on today’s show to share his experience as an accountant and forest fighter, why he decided to work as a staff adjuster, and how one phone call enabled him to begin his new career journey despite not knowing anyone within the adjusting industry. He shares how his experiences and skills in his previous careers have helped him transition to his new role as an insurance adjuster and how this transition has impacted his life. He also shares how the company trained and prepared him to work in the field, the support he receives from the company as well as his fellow staff adjusters, and the tools he uses while adjusting claims.

“A big thing you learn - whether it’s in accounting, firefighting, or oil fields - is the ability to adapt to different situations. And with claims - every claim is different.” - James Corey

  • From a Roofers Perspective with Russel Lawrenz

Russell Lawrenz is a HAAG Certified roof inspector with American Pride Roofing. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications and Media Studies, he began working with Allstate as a staff CAT adjuster. After working in the catastrophe insurance adjusting industry for over a decade, he decided to pivot his career and begin his journey as a roofer.

Russell joins me today to share his perspective on working as a staff CAT adjuster, the challenges he faced while trying to find a work-life balance, and why he decided to become a roof inspector. He shares the benefits and drawbacks of working as a staff CAT adjuster and how he transitioned from a steady salary-based income to more commission-based earnings. He also shares the tool he uses to calculate estimates, his perspective on why many roofers criticize Xactimate pricing, and explains the importance of homeowners being cautious while hiring a contract roofer.

“If the estimate is correct from the insurance carrier and the adjuster, and a roofer tells you he can’t work within those numbers, it’s just absolutely bogus.” - Russell Lawrenz

  • Giving Back in the Adjusting Industry

AT025 Giving Back in the Adjusting Industry

We have all been new to the adjusting industry at one time or another. As a new independent insurance adjuster, learning everything you need to know to be successful in this industry can be a challenge. That challenge is greatly multiplied if you do not have a solid support system and resources available to help you learn every aspect and nuance of the job.

On today’s episode, I’m discussing the importance of giving back to your fellow adjusters through help, support, and guidance. I’ll explain how spending as little as ten minutes a day helping a new adjuster understand various strategies, systems, and programs can make a significant impact on their career and life. I’ll also explain the importance of collaborating with others to advance your knowledge and understanding in the field and why maintaining a level of common sense while working claims is critical to your ability to succeed in this industry.

“Just a little bit of help to the guys in need, given to the right person, can take you a long way.” - Jason Heenan

In This Episode of Adjuster Talk:

    • Giving back in the insurance adjusting industry.
    • The importance of helping others.
    • Transitioning your attitude from a “competition mindset” to a “resource-oriented mindset.”
    • Collaborating with others to advance your skills and knowledge.
    • The importance of using common sense while in the field.
    • The importance of treating each claim based on its own merit
    • Skills that distinguish good adjusters from average adjusters.

  • How to Avoid Flaming Out with Adam Gardner of Adjuster Pro Part 1

For many people, becoming a real estate insurance adjuster can often be a confusing process. Determining which licensing schools to attend and finding the right support systems to help you move your career forward is often one of the first – and most challenging – tasks that new adjusters face. What’s worse, statistics show that even once you find a school and obtain your license, about 90% of new adjusters “flame out” early in their career.

With me today is Adam Gardner, co-founder of Adjuster Pro, an insurance claims adjuster training facility based in Bedford, Texas and licensed to teach in numerous states, including Florida, North Carolina, New York, and Arkansas. Adam joins me today to share his story on how he got started as an insurance claims adjuster and what drove him to start – and build – the Adjuster Pro training school to what it is today. He shares his thoughts on why he believes many adjusters fail in the industry and what it truly takes to be successful in the adjusting industry.

I discovered that hard work, determination, and very long hours enabled me to become proficient – and more than proficient.” – Adam Gardner

In This Episode of Adjuster Talk:

    • What drove Adam to start and build the Adjuster Pro training facility
    • How their services have evolved over the years
    • The annual number of new licenses issued by Adjuster Pro
    • The evolution of what a claims adjuster does every day
    • Why many adjusters “flame out” early in their career – and how to avoid it
    • Where people often fail as an insurance adjuster
    • How lack of communication can often lead to failure
