Η εικοστή πέμπτη Μαρτίου θεωρείται μια πολύ σημαντική αργία για τους Έλληνες που συμβολίζει δύο γεγονότα, ένα ιστορικό κι ένα θρησκευτικό. Την έναρξη του απελευθερωτικού αγώνα από τους Τούρκους και τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου.

Σχετικά με το πρώτο, στο μοναστήρι της Μεγίστης Λαύρας στα Καλάβρυτα ο επίσκοπος Παλαιών Πατρών Γερμανός σήκωσε το λάβαρο της Επανάστασης, κηρύσσοντας την έναρξη του αγώνα, ορίζοντας έτσι την εικοστή πέμπτη Μαρτίου του 1821 ως τη γενική ημερομηνία έναρξης του απελευθερωτικού αγώνα του Ελληνισμού από τον Τουρκικό ζυγό που για τετρακόσια χρόνια τον υποδούλωνε. Προς τιμήν αυτής της ημέρας σε όλη τη χώρα διεξάγονται σχολικές γιορτές με ποιήματα και τραγούδια, και παρελάσεις, με τους γονείς να μαζεύονται για να καμαρώσουν τα παιδιά τους να παρελαύνουν φορώντας τη σχολική στολή.

Από την άλλη, την ίδια μέρα γιορτάζεται και ο Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου, η ανακοίνωση δηλαδή στην Παρθένο Μαρία πως θα φέρει το παιδί του θεού από τον αρχάγγελο Γαβριήλ. Επίσης αποτελεί την ονομαστική γιορτή των Ευάγγελου και Ευαγγελίας.

Σε πολλές περιοχές της Ελλάδας, τα παιδιά βγάζουν από το χέρι τους το Μάρτη – ένα βραχιόλι από πολύχρωμες κλωστές (συνήθως μια άσπρη και μία κόκκινη) που τα προφυλάσσει, και τον αφήνουν πάνω στις τριανταφυλλιές ή σε κλαδιά δέντρων για να το πάρουν τα χελιδόνια και να χτίσουν τις φωλιές τους.

Παραδοσιακά, την ημέρα αυτή πάνω στα γιορτινά τραπέζια πρωταρχική θέση έχει ο μπακαλιάρος σκορδαλιά, ένα πιάτο που μπορεί να θεωρηθεί και ως ένα από τα εθνικά φαγητά των Ελλήνων. Έχει όμως πιο πολύ συμβολικό χαρακτήρα μιας και δεν αποτελεί ένα φαγητό που παρασκευάζεται συχνά.

The Twenty-fifth of March

The twenty-fifth of March is considered a very important holiday for Greeks that symbolizes two events, which are a historical one, the start of the liberating fight against the Turks, and a religious one, the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.

Regarding the first one, at the monastery of Great Lavra at Kalavrita, the Paleon Patron bishop raised the banner of the fight, defining thus the twenty-fifth of March 1821 as the general date of the rebellion movement of Greeks from the Turkish occupation that subjugated them for four hundred years. In honor of this day, all over the country, school festivals with poems and songs are held, as are parades with parents who gather proudly as their children march and wear the school uniform.

On the other hand, on the same day, the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is celebrated, which is to say the announcement to her that she will be the bearer of God's child by the archangel Gabriel. Furthermore, it is the name day of "Evangelos" and "Evangelia."

In many parts of Greece, children take the "March," which is a bracelet of multicolored strings (usually white and red) that protects them, off their hands and leave it on roses or tree branches to be taken by swallows to construct their nest.

Traditionally, on this day the primordial position on festive tables is taken by cod and garlic paste, a dish that can be considered as one of Greeks' national foods. It has mostly symbolic character though, since it is not a food often made.
