تهران، بزرگترین شهر و پایتخت ۲۰۰ سالۀ کشور ایران که در ابتدا روستایی بیش نبوده است، امروزه با جمعیت بیش از ۱۲ میلیون نفر به عنوان شانزدهمین شهر پر تراکم جهان برآورد می شود.

برج آزادی، برج میلاد، و منظرۀ قله دماوند (که آتشفشانی خاموش است)، نمادهای شهر تهران شناخته می شوند.

تهران در میان رشته کوههای البرز در شمال ( با قلۀ توچال به ارتفاع ۳۹۳۳ متر) و دشت کویر در جنوب محصور شده است و ارتفاع متوسط آن از سطح دریا ۱۲۰۰ متر می باشد.

تهران از لحاظ آب و هوایی تحت تأثیر سه عامل کوه، کویر و بادهای غربی بوده، (غیر از نواحی کوهستانی شمالی که اندکی مرطوب و معتدل است،) کلاً گرم و خشک می باشد.

از رودخانه های تهران که عمدتاً از کوههای شمالی سرچشمه می گیرند می توان رود کرج، جاجرود و لار را نام برد که با وجود سدهای کرج، لتیان، و لار، این رودها آب آشامیدنی تهران و بخشی از نیروی الکتریکی کشور را تأمین می کنند.

در شمال شهر که به کوهها نزدیک تر است معمولاً خیابان ها و کوچه ها شیب دار تر و در جنوب شهر هموارتراند.

همچنین در جنوب شهر، ساختمان های بلند مرتبه کمتر و در شمال شهر بیشتر بوده ساختمان های دولتی و اداری نیز در مرکز شهر قرار دارند.

اکثر مردم تهران مسلمان بوده به زبان فارسی صحبت می کنند.

اگرچه اقلیت های قومی و مذهبی نیز در این استان ساکن بوده، به زبان خاص خود صحبت می کنند.

قالی، گلیم، پشتی، کارهای چوبی، خاتم، سفال، و نقاشی های روی شیشه از جمله آثار صنایع دستی و سوغاتی هایی است که می توان در نقاط مختلف تهران یافت.

ترافیک مشکلی عمده در تهران است.

تراکم ترافیکی و فقدان فضای کافی پارکینگ، زندگی روزمره مردم را تحت فشار قرار داده حرکت در سطح شهر را برای همه دشوار می کند و مشکلات دیگری از قبیل آلودگی هوا را بوجود می آورد.

فوتبال ورزش اول تهران است و بیشترین طرفداران را نیز دارد.

در کنار آن ورزش باستانی کشتی نیز به عنوان ورزش سنتی و ملی بسیار مورد توجه قرار گرفته است.

چندین پیست اسکی خوب نیز از جمله پیست های اسکی توچال، دیزین، و شمشک در نزدیکی شهر قرار دارند.

کوهنوردی هم از ورزش های دیگر شهر است که به ویژه در روزهای تعطیل مورد توجه عموم قرار می گیرد.

Tehran, the largest city and 200-year-old capital of Iran, which began as a village, and has a population of more than twelve million people, is the 16th most populated city of the world today.

Azadi Tower, Milad tower, and the view of Mount Damavand (which is a non-active volcano) are considered the symbols of Tehran.

Tehran is surrounded by the Alborz mountains to the north (with the 3933-meter-high Mount Tochal) and the Kavir desert to the south, and its average altitude is 1200 meters above sea level.

Influenced by the three factors of mountain, desert, and western winds, (except the northern mountain areas which are a little humid and mild) the weather is generally hot and dry.

Among the rivers of Tehran, which mostly originate from the northern mountains, the Karaj, Jajrood, and Lar rivers, via the Karaj, Latian, and Lar dams, provide Tehran's drinking water and part of the country's electrical power.

To the north of the city, which is closer to the mountains, the streets and alleys are steeper, and at the south they're more flat.

Also in the south, there are fewer luxury buildings than in the north, and governmental and office buildings are located at the city center.

Most of Tehran's people are Muslims and speak in the Persian language.

Ethnic and religious minorities also live in this province, and speak in their own languages.

Carpets, rugs, cushions, wood works, mosaics, pottery, and glass paintings are examples of the handicrafts and souvenirs that can be found in different places in Tehran.

Traffic is a big problem in Tehran.
