Nochevieja y Año Nuevo (Spain)

¡Hola, amigos! Hemos llegado al final de otro año; quedan sólo unas horas para empezar un nuevo año cargado de un montón de nuevos proyectos, buenas intenciones y propósitos de cambio.

Aquí, como en casi todos los rincones del planeta, es el momento de hacer balance de lo bueno y lo malo del año, y de hacer todas esas propuestas que no cumpliremos (dejar de fumar, adelgazar, ir al gimnasio, aprender inglés…)

Pero también es el momento de una de las fiestas más largas, cansadas y caras del año. Las celebraciones de Año Nuevo suelen empezar con una cena con la familia o los amigos en la Nochevieja, que se alarga hasta las doce de la noche, momento en que todas las cadenas de televisión conectan con un reloj emblemático en el que se escuchan las campanadas. ¿Y sabéis lo que hacemos en España mientras suenan las campanadas? Comemos una uva por cada campanada. Se supone que si al final de las doce campanadas hemos conseguido comernos las doce uvas, será un año de fortuna, pero si no…

Tras las uvas la gente, sobre todo la gente joven, sale en masa a las calles a fiestas en locales donde pasa la noche entera hasta que prácticamente sale el sol. Para muchos es la primera vez que llegan amaneciendo a casa, para otros la primera vez que se ponen un traje, para otros la primera vez que se emborrachan…

Por hoy nada más. Os deseo una feliz entrada y salida de año, y que tengáis la fuerza de voluntad para llevar a cabo todos vuestros proyectos y proposiciones para este año. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

Hello, friends! We've reached the end of another year; there are only a few hours left before the new year begins, full of a ton of new projects, good intentions and resolutions for change.

Here, as in almost every corner of the earth, it’s time to weigh out the good and bad things of the year, and to make all those resolutions we won't fulfill (to quit smoking, to lose weight, to go to a gym, to learn English...)

But it’s also time for one of the longest, most tiring and most expensive parties in the year. New Year's celebrations usually start with a dinner with family or friends on New Year’s Eve, which lasts until twelve at night, the moment at which all of the TV channels connect to an emblematic clock, where the ringing of bells is heard. And, do you know what we do in Spain while the bells are ringing? We eat a grape for each bell toll. Supposedly, if at the end of the twelve strokes we've managed to eat the twelve grapes, it'll be a year of fortune, but if we don't...

After the grapes, people, mainly young people, go out in groups onto the streets to parties in bars where they spend the entire night, practically until the sun comes up. For many, it's the first time that they come home after an all-nighter, for others, the first time that they put on a suit, for others the first time that they get drunk...
