When the parrot came to him and told him that the fishmonger wouldn’t give them any more fish, he said,
“Never mind. So long as the hens lay eggs and the cow gives milk we can have omelettes and junket. And there are plenty of vegetables left in the garden. The Winter is still a long way off. Don’t fuss. That was the trouble with Sarah—she would fuss. I wonder how Sarah’s getting on—an excellent woman—in some ways—Well, well!”
    -----------------------
When the parrot came to him and told him that the fishmonger wouldn’t give them any more fish,
    he said, “Never mind.
So long as the hens lay eggs and the cow gives milk we can have omelettes and junket.
    ✔so long as...: ...
And there are plenty of vegetables left in the garden.
The Winter is still a long way off.
✔a long way off: 멀리 떨어져 있다.
✔just around the corner: 얼마 안 남았다.
Don’t fuss. That was the trouble with Sarah—she would fuss.
    I wonder how Sarah’s getting on—an excellent woman—in some ways—Well, well!”
✔how [누구] is getting on: 어떻게 지내는지
    3 min
Then the animals made a vegetable and flower stall outside the garden-gate and sold radishes and roses to the people that passed by along the road.
But still they didn’t seem to make enough money to pay all the bills—and still the Doctor wouldn’t worry.
    ---------------------
Then the animals made a vegetable and flower stall outside the garden-gate
and sold radishes and roses to the people that passed by along the road.
    ✔pass by: 지나가다
    ✔along the road: 길을 따라
✔발음: 3번째 아델은 passed by along the road 부분에서 by와 along의 순서를 바꿔 passed along by the road라고 읽습니다.
But still they didn’t seem to make enough money to pay all the bills
—and still the Doctor wouldn’t worry.
The car wouldn't start this morning.

After a little they got to do the work so well that the Doctor said that he had never had his house kept so tidy or so clean
    before.
In this way things went along all right for a while; but without money they found it very hard.
    ---------------
    After a little
they got to do the work so well that the Doctor said
✔so [부사] that [주어]+[동사]: so well that the Doctor said...
that he had never had his house kept so tidy or so clean before.
✔have his car repaired: 차를 수리하다.
✔have his house kept
✔have his house kept [tidy or clean]:
✔he has never had his house kept tidy or clean before: 앞의 has는 현재완료 has이고, 뒤의 had는 현재완료 has 뒤에 오는 동사(have)의 과거완료형입니다.
✔he had never had his house kept tidy or clean before: 바로 위 문장과 동일하지만, 현재완료 has를 과거완료 had로 바꾸었습니다.
    In this way
    (이런 식으로)
    things went along all right for a while;
    (얼마 동안은 일이 잘 돌아갔다)
but without money they found it very hard.
✔found it very hard: 매우 힘들다는 사실을 깨달았다. it은 그들의 '생활'을 지칭합니다.
    2 min
Of course at first they all found their new jobs very hard to do—all except Chee-Chee, who had hands, and could do things like a man. But they soon got used to it; and they used to think it great fun to watch Jip, the dog, sweeping his tail over the floor with a rag tied onto it for a broom.
    ------------------------------------------
Of course at first they all found their new jobs very hard to do
✔found [their new jobs] [very hard to do]:
—all except Chee-Chee, who had hands, and could do things like a man.
    But they soon got used to it;
    (그러나 그들은 곧 일에 익숙해졌다)
✔get used to: ...에 익숙해지다. be used to...
and they used to think it great fun
✔used to [동사원형]: ... 위 get used to와는 전혀 다른 뜻의 표현입니다.
✔think [it] [great fun]: [그것]이 [매우 재미있다]고 생각하다. it은 뒤에 나오는 to watch Jip...
to watch Jip, the dog, sweeping his tail over the floor with a rag tied onto it for a broom.
✔sweep [his tail] [over the floor]: 도구를 목적어로 쓸 때는 장소 앞에 전치사를 붙여 줍니다. sweep a broom over the floor.
✔[with a rag] [tied onto it] [for a broom]:
    2 min
So it was agreed that the monkey, Chee-Chee, was to do the cooking and mending; the dog was to sweep the floors; the duck was to dust and make the beds; the owl, Too-Too, was to keep the accounts, and the pig was to do the gardening. They made Polynesia, the parrot, housekeeper and laundress, because she was the oldest.
    ------------------
    So it was agreed
    (그래서 다음과 같이 합의가 되었다)
    that the monkey, Chee-Chee, was to do the cooking and mending;
✔[be동사]+[to 동사원형]: '...
    the dog was to sweep the floors;
    (개는 바닥을 쓸기로 했고)
    the duck was to dust and make the beds;
the owl, Too-Too, was to keep the accounts,
and the pig was to do the gardening.
They made Polynesia, the parrot, housekeeper and laundress, because she was the oldest.
    2 min
And the owl, Too-Too, who was good at arithmetic, figured it out that there was only money enough left to last another week—if they each had one meal a day and no more.
Then the parrot said, “I think we all ought to do the housework ourselves. At least we can do that much. After all, it is for our sakes that the old man finds himself so lonely and so poor.”
    ---------------------
And the owl, Too-Too, who was good at arithmetic, figured it out
✔it: 뒤에 나오는 that절을 가리킵니다. that절이 너무 길어서 가짜 목적어 it을 먼저 쓰고 that절은 뒤로 뺐습니다.
that there was only money enough left to last another week
—if they each had one meal a day and no more.
    Then the parrot said,
“I think we all ought to do the housework ourselves.
✔ought to: 해야 한다. should 또는 have to와 바꾸어 쓸 수 있는 표현입니다.
At least we can do that much.
    ✔that much: 그 정도
After all, it is for our sakes that the old man finds himself so lonely and so poor.”
✔발음: 3번째 버전에서 폴리네시아 역의 성우는 for our sakes의 for를 이상하게 발음합니다.

“Money is a nuisance,” he used to say. “We’d all be much better off if it had never been invented. What does money matter, so long as we are happy?”
But soon the animals themselves began to get worried. And one evening when the Doctor was asleep in his chair before the kitchen-fire they began talking it over among themselves in whispers.
    ------------------------------
“Money is a nuisance,” he used to say.
✔used to say: used to를 썼으니, 한 번이 아니라 곧잘 습관처럼 이야기했던 것입니다.
“We’d all be much better off if it had never been invented.
가정법 과거의 정석대로 쓰자면 이 문장도 we'd all have been much better off(우리 모두 훨씬 더 잘 살았을 텐데)가 됩니다.
We would all be much better off if it were not invented.
What does money matter, so long as we are happy?”
✔so long as...: ...
But soon the animals themselves began to get worried.
And one evening when the Doctor was asleep in his chair before the kitchen-fire
they began talking it over among themselves in whispers.
✔talk it over: 그것에 대해 논의하다.
    2 min
And very soon he was poorer than he had ever been before. With all these mouths to fill, and the house to look after, and no one to do the mending, and no money coming in to pay the butcher’s bill, things began to look very difficult. But the Doctor didn’t worry at all.
    -------------
And very soon he was poorer than he had ever been before.
With all these mouths to fill, and the house to look after,
✔look after the house: 집을 돌보다
and no one to do the mending, and no money coming in to pay the butcher’s bill,
✔전치사 with: no one...과 no money...
things began to look very difficult.
But the Doctor didn’t worry at all.

“I tell you I will not have him around,” said Sarah. “He eats the linoleum. If you don’t send him away this minute I’ll—I’ll go and get married!”
“All right,” said the Doctor, “go and get married. It can’t be helped.” And he took down his hat and went out into the garden.
So Sarah Dolittle packed up her things and went off; and the Doctor was left all alone with his animal family.
    ----------------------
“I tell you I will not have him around,” said Sarah.
I'm telling you로 쓰기도 합니다.
    “He eats the linoleum.
If you don’t send him away this minute I’ll—I’ll go and get married!”
“All right,” said the Doctor, “go and get married. It can’t be helped.”
✔it can’t be helped: '어쩔 수 없다'.
And he took down his hat and went out into the garden.
✔take down his hat:
    So Sarah Dolittle packed up her things and went off;
and the Doctor was left all alone with his animal family.

He doesn’t like the circus; and I haven’t the money to send him back to Africa where he comes from. He minds his own business and on the whole is very well behaved. Don’t be so fussy.”
    --------------
    He doesn’t like the circus;
and I haven’t the money to send him back to Africa where he comes from.
I haven’t the money는 영국식 관습 표현으로 비문입니다. I don't have the money가 올바른 표현입니다.
    ✔where: 관계부사.
✔Africa [where he comes from]: [그가 온 곳인] 아프리카.
He minds his own business and on the whole is very well behaved.
✔mind one's own business: 자기 일에 신경쓰다. mind your own business라고 하면 '네 걱정이나 해라'라는 뜻이죠.
    ✔on the whole: 전체적으로, 전반적으로
✔be well behaved: 행동을 잘하다.
✔behave oneself well: 행동을 잘하다.
    Don’t be so fussy.”
