“It isn’t an alligator,” said the Doctor—“it’s a crocodile.”
“I don’t care what you call it,” said his sister. “It’s a nasty thing to find under the bed. I won’t have it in the house.”
“But he has promised me,” the Doctor answered, “that he will not bite any one.
    ----------------------
“It isn’t an alligator,” said the Doctor—“it’s a crocodile.”
“I don’t care what you call it,” said his sister.
“It’s a nasty thing to find under the bed. I won’t have it in the house.”
“But he has promised me,” the Doctor answered, “that he will not bite any one.
✔he has promised me that he will not bite any one: 간접화법으로, 전체 시제가 현재완료이므로 will을 그냥 쓰면 됩니다.
✔he promised me that he would not bite any one: 만약 전체 시제가 과거형이었다면, will을 would로 바꿔야 합니다.

So then the Doctor’s sister came to him and said,
“John, you must send that creature away. Now the farmers and the old ladies are afraid to send their animals to you—just as we were beginning to be well off again. Now we shall be ruined entirely. This is the last straw. I will no longer be housekeeper for you if you don’t send away that alligator.”
    --------------------
So then the Doctor’s sister came to him and said,
“John, you must send that creature away.
Now the farmers and the old ladies are afraid to send their animals to you—
just as we were beginning to be well off again.
    ✔just as: as는 '...
    ✔well off: 잘사는, 유복한, 부유한.
Now we shall be ruined entirely.
    This is the last straw.
✔the last straw: 지금까지는 참았지만 더 이상 참을 수 없게 만드는 마지막 하나의 행동. the final straw라고도 하고, the straw that broke the camel's back(낙타의 등을 부러뜨린 지푸라기)라고도 합니다.
I will no longer be housekeeper for you if you don’t send away that alligator.”

But now the old ladies grew afraid to send their lap-dogs to Doctor Dolittle because of the crocodile; and the farmers wouldn’t believe that he would not eat the lambs and sick calves they brought to be cured. So the Doctor went to the crocodile and told him he must go back to his circus. But he wept such big tears, and begged so hard to be allowed to stay, that the Doctor hadn’t the heart to turn him out.
    -------------------------------
    But now the old ladies grew afraid to send their lap-dogs to Doctor Dolittle because of the crocodile;
and the farmers wouldn’t believe that he would not eat the lambs and sick calves they brought to be cured.
✔would not believe: 이때 would는 과거의 어떤 상황에서의 거절을 의미합니다.
✔he would not eat: 이때 would는 will이 간접화법에서 과거형이 된 것입니다.
✔the lambs and sick calves:
✔[the lambs and sick calves] they brought:
✔[the lambs and sick calves they brought] to be cured:
So the Doctor went to the crocodile and told him he must go back to his circus.
But he wept such big tears, and begged so hard to be allowed to stay, that the Doctor hadn’t the heart to turn him out.
✔so hard ... that...: '너무 열심히...
✔not have the heart to
    ✔turn out: 쫓아내다
✔비문: '마음을 갖다'는 뜻인 hadn't the heart에서 '갖다'의 의미를 지닌 have의 부정을 have not으로 쓰는 것은 영국식 관습이며, 사실상 비문입니다. 올바르게 쓰려면 the Doctor didn't have the heart...

He asked couldn’t he sleep in the fish-pond at the bottom of the garden, if he promised not to eat the fish. When the circus-men came to take him back he got so wild and savage that he frightened them away. But to every one in the house he was always as gentle as a kitten.
    -------------------------
He asked couldn’t he sleep in the fish-pond at the bottom of the garden,
He asked if he couldn't sleep... (...
✔듣기: 첫 번째 버전에서 캐런은 he asked if he couldn't sleep... 그러나 두 번째, 세 번째 버전에서는 비문을 그대로 읽되, he asked와 couldn't he...
if he promised not to eat the fish.
✔promise not to eat:
When the circus-men came to take him back
he got so wild and savage that he frightened them away.
But to every one in the house
he was always as gentle as a kitten.

The Doctor talked to him in crocodile-language and took him into the house and made his tooth better. But when the crocodile saw what a nice house it was—with all the different places for the different kinds of animals—he too wanted to live with the Doctor.
    ------------
The Doctor talked to him in crocodile-language
and took him into the house and made his tooth better.
But when the crocodile saw what a nice house it was
✔what a nice house it is: 그대로 쓰면 감탄문입니다.
—with all the different places for the different kinds of animals—
he too wanted to live with the Doctor.

The other animals in the house called him “Chee-Chee”—which is a common word in monkey-language, meaning “ginger.”
And another time, when the circus came to Puddleby, the crocodile who had a bad toothache escaped at night and came into the Doctor’s garden.

The other animals in the house called him “Chee-Chee”—
which is a common word in monkey-language, meaning “ginger.”
And another time, when the circus came to Puddleby,
the crocodile who had a bad toothache escaped at night and came into the Doctor’s garden.
✔the crocodile who had a bad toothache:
✔[the crocodile who had a bad toothache] escaped at night:

The organ-grinder got awfully angry and said that he wanted to keep the monkey. But the Doctor told him that if he didn’t go away he would punch him on the nose. John Dolittle was a strong man, though he wasn’t very tall. So the Italian went away saying rude things and the monkey stayed with Doctor Dolittle and had a good home.
    -----------------------------
    The organ-grinder got awfully angry
and said that he wanted to keep the monkey.
    But the Doctor told him
that if he didn’t go away he would punch him on the nose.
✔조건절: 여기서 if... he would... "If you don't go away, I will punch you on the nose."
John Dolittle was a strong man,
    though he wasn’t very tall.
and the monkey stayed with Doctor Dolittle and had a good home.

Once when he was sitting on his garden wall, smoking a pipe in the evening, an Italian organ-grinder came round with a monkey on a string. The Doctor saw at once that the monkey’s collar was too tight and that he was dirty and unhappy. So he took the monkey away from the Italian, gave the man a shilling and told him to go.
    -------------
Once when he was sitting on his garden wall, smoking a pipe in the evening,
✔분사 구문: smoking a pipe in the evening은 앞 부분 전체를 보충해 주는 분사구문입니다.
an Italian organ-grinder came round with a monkey on a string.
✔a monkey on a string:
The Doctor saw at once that the monkey’s collar was too tight
    ✔at once: 당장
and that he was dirty and unhappy.
✔and that: and 다음에 that이 왔으므로, 앞의 saw에 이어지는 that절이라는 사실을 알 수 있습니다.
gave the man a shilling and told him to go.

And often even after they got well, they did not want to go away—they liked the Doctor and his house so much. And he never had the heart to refuse them when they asked if they could stay with him. So in this way he went on getting more and more pets.
    ---------------
And often even after they got well, they did not want to go away—
    ✔get well: 몸이 낫다.
they liked the Doctor and his house so much.
And he never had the heart to refuse them
✔not have the heart to
when they asked if they could stay with him.
✔ask if: ...
So in this way he went on getting more and more pets.
    ✔in this way: 이런 식으로
'이런 식으로 계속 간다면(한다면)' 생각나시나요? if you go on like this...

    CHAPTER 03: MORE MONEY TROUBLES
AND soon now the Doctor began to make money again; and his sister, Sarah, bought a new dress and was happy.
Some of the animals who came to see him were so sick that they had to stay at the Doctor’s house for a week. And when they were getting better they used to sit in chairs on the lawn.

    AND soon now the Doctor began to make money again;
and his sister, Sarah, bought a new dress and was happy.
Some of the animals who came to see him were so sick that they had to stay at the Doctor’s house for a week.
✔so sick that they had to stay: so [형용사] that [주어]+[동사] 구문입니다.
✔some of the animals: 동물들 중 일부
✔[some of the animals] who came to see him:
And when they were getting better they used to sit in chairs on the lawn.
✔get better: 몸이 낫다.
✔sit in chairs: 이 경우엔 보통 sit on chairs라고 합니다.
