And so, in a few years’ time, every living thing for miles and miles got to know about John Dolittle, M.D. And the birds who flew to other countries in the winter told the animals in foreign lands of the wonderful doctor of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh, who could understand their talk and help them in their troubles.
    -----------------------
And so, in a few years’ time,
every living thing for miles and miles got to know about John Dolittle, M.D.
✔[every living thing] for miles and miles:
    ✔get to know: 알게 되다
And the birds who flew to other countries in the winter told the animals in foreign lands
✔the birds who flew: 날아갔던 새들
    ✔fly-flew-flown: 날다
✔[the birds] who flew to other countries:
✔[the birds who flew to other countries] in the winter:
✔the animals in foreign lands:
of the wonderful doctor of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh,
✔tell [누구] of [무엇]: [누구]에게 [무엇]에 관해 알려주다. of 대신 about을 써도 되지만, tell... of는 특히 '...
who could understand their talk and help them in their troubles.
✔who: 관계대명사 who는 바로 앞의 the wonderful doctor (of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh)를 가리킵니다.

There were so many that came that he had to have special doors made for the different kinds. He wrote “HORSES” over the front door, “COWS” over the side door, and “SHEEP” on the kitchen door. Each kind of animal had a separate door—even the mice had a tiny tunnel made for them into the cellar, where they waited patiently in rows for the Doctor to come round to them.
    -----------------------
There were so many that came that he had to have special doors made for the different kinds.
✔so [many that came] that [he had to...]: 문장 전체는 so [형용사] that [주어+동사] 구문입니다. so는 첫번째 that이 아니라 두번째 that과 호응합니다.
✔there were so many (animals) that came: 오는 동물들이 너무 많았다. many 다음에 animals가 생략되어 있습니다.
✔many (animals) that came: 주격 관계대명사 that이 animals를 뒤에서 꾸며 줍니다.
✔he had to have special doors:
✔[special doors] made for the different kinds: 여러 종류를 위해 제작된 [특별한 문들]. made는 분사입니다. 앞에 있는 doors를 꾸며 줍니다. the different kinds는 the different kinds of animals를 뜻합니다.
He wrote “HORSES” over the front door, “COWS” over the side door, and “SHEEP” on the kitchen door.
✔over: ...위에. over the door는 문 자체가 아닌 문 위에 걸었다는 식으로 생각하면 되고, on the door는 문 자체에 붙였다는 식으로 생각하면 됩니다.
Each kind of animal had a separate door—
참고로 each and every...
even the mice had a tiny tunnel made for them into the cellar,
✔a tiny tunnel into the cellar:
✔a tiny tunnel [made for them] into the cellar:
where they waited patiently in rows for the Doctor to come round to them.
✔they waited for the Doctor:
✔they waited for the Doctor [to come round to them]:
✔they waited [in rows] for the Doctor to come round to them:
앞에 콤마가 없다면 where 대신 in which를 쓸 수도 있습니다.

And whenever any creatures got sick—not only horses and cows and dogs—but all the little things of the fields, like
harvest-mice and water-voles, badgers and bats, they came at once to his house on the edge of the town, so that his big garden was nearly always crowded with animals trying to get in to see him.
    ----------------------
And whenever any creatures got sick—
    ✔whenever: ...
not only horses and cows and dogs—
    ✔not only [A] but also [B]: [A]만이 아니라 [B] 또한
but all the little things of the fields, like harvest-mice and water-voles, badgers and bats,
✔but: but also에서 also가 생략되었습니다. 그래도 앞에 not only가 있으므로, 그냥 but이 아니라 but also에서 also가 생략된 것으로 파악해야 합니다.
they came at once to his house on the edge of the town,
✔at once: 당장.
so that his big garden was nearly always crowded
✔so that: 원래 so that이 이렇게 붙어 나오면 그 뒤에 can이 와서 '...
with animals trying to get in to see him.
    ✔be crowded with...: ...
✔animals trying to...: ...
✔animals [trying to get in]:
✔animals trying to [get in to see him]: [그에게 진료를 받기 위해 안에 들어가]려고 하는 동물들. to see him은 '그에게 진료를 받기 위해서'라고 해석하면 됩니다.

And so it was with all the other animals that were brought to him. As soon as they found that he could talk their language, they told him where the pain was and how they felt, and of course it was easy for him to cure them.
Now all these animals went back and told their brothers and friends that there was a doctor in the little house with the big garden who really 'was' a doctor.
    -----------------------------------------
And so it was with all the other animals that were brought to him.
✔so it was with...: ...
✔all the other animals:
✔[all the other animals] that were brought to him: 능동으로 표현한다면, all the other animals that people brought to him이라고 말할 수 있습니다.
As soon as they found that he could talk their language,
they told him where the pain was and how they felt,
✔where the pain was: told에 따르는 간접의문문이므로 [의문사]+[주어]+[동사] 어순이 되었습니다.
'통증이 어디냐?' where is the pain?
'통증이 어디인지 그에게 말하다' they tell him where the pain is
'그들이 어떻게 느끼냐?' how do they feel?
'그들이 어떻게 느끼는지 그에게 말하다' they tell him how they feel
and of course it was easy for him to cure them.
✔it was easy to cure them:
✔it was easy [for him] to cure them: '[그가] 그들을 치료하는 것은 쉬웠다' 또는 '그들을 치료하는 것은 [그에게] 쉬웠다'라고 해석합니다. him은 to부정사 to cure them의 의미상의 주어입니다.
✔참고: it was kind of him to cure them.
Now all these animals went back and told their brothers and friends
that there was a doctor in the little house with the big garden who really 'was' a doctor.
✔there was a doctor: "There is a doctor..."
✔who really 'was' a doctor: 관계대명사 who는 앞에 있는 doctor를 꾸며줍니다.

Then John Dolittle got a fine, big pair of green spectacles; and the plow-horse stopped going blind in one eye and could see as well as ever.
And soon it became a common sight to see farm-animals wearing glasses in the country round Puddleby; and a blind horse was a thing unknown.
    -------------------------
    Then John Dolittle got a fine, big pair of green spectacles;
and the plow-horse stopped going blind in one eye
and could see as well as ever.
    (예전처럼 잘 볼 수 있었다.)
    ✔as ever: 예전처럼. 여느 때처럼.
    And soon it became a common sight to see farm-animals wearing glasses in the country round Puddleby;
    ✔a common sight: 흔한 풍경
✔see farm-animals wearing glasses:
✔it became a common sight to see...: ...
✔round: '...
and a blind horse was a thing unknown.
✔a thing unknown: 알려지지 않은 것.

“Did you hurt the boy much?” asked the Doctor.
“Oh, no,” said the horse. “I kicked him in the right place. The vet’s looking after him now. When will my glasses be ready?”
“I’ll have them for you next week,” said the Doctor. “Come in again Tuesday—Good morning!”
    -----------------------
“Did you hurt the boy much?” asked the Doctor.
    “Oh, no,” said the horse.
“I kicked him in the right place.
✔the right place: 적절한 위치.
The vet’s looking after him now.
✔look after: 돌보다. 보살피다. take care of.
When will my glasses be ready?”
“I’ll have them for you next week,” said the Doctor.
✔have: 여기서 have는 그냥 '가지다'의 have입니다.
    “Come in again Tuesday—Good morning!”

“I’m a pretty quiet creature as a rule,” said the horse—“very patient with people—don’t make much fuss. But it was bad enough to have that vet giving me the wrong medicine. And when that red-faced booby started to monkey with me, I just couldn’t bear it any more.”
    --------------------------------
“I’m a pretty quiet creature as a rule,” said the horse—
✔as a rule: 대체로, 일반적으로. usually
“very patient with people—don’t make much fuss.
But it was bad enough to have that vet giving me the wrong medicine.
✔have [that vet] giving me the wrong medicine:
And when that red-faced booby started to monkey with me, I just couldn’t bear it any more.”
    ✔booby: 멍청이. a stupid person.
✔not... any more: 더 이상 ...

“Where did he put it?” asked the Doctor.
“Oh, he didn’t put it anywhere—on me,” said the horse. “He only tried to. I kicked him into the duck-pond.”
    “Well, well!” said the Doctor.
    -----------------------------------------------
“Where did he put it?” asked the Doctor.
“Oh, he didn’t put it anywhere—on me,” said the horse.
    “He only tried to.
I kicked him into the duck-pond.”
    “Well, well!” said the Doctor.

My farmer’s boy thinks he knows all about horses. I wish you could see him—his face is so fat he looks as though he had no eyes—and he has got as much brain as a potato-bug. He tried to put a mustard-plaster on me last week.”
    ----------------------------
My farmer’s boy thinks he knows all about horses.
I wish you could see him—
I wish it would stop raining.
his face is so fat he looks as though he had no eyes—
✔so fat (that) he looks...: so [형용사] that [주어+동사] 구문에서 that이 생략되었습니다.
✔as though...: ...인 것처럼. as if와 동일한 뜻입니다. as though와 as if 뒤에는 가정법이 옵니다.
and he has got as much brain as a potato-bug.
    ✔have no brains: 머리가 나쁘다
    ✔have brains: 똑똑하다.
✔has got: 가지고 있다. have/has를 영국에서는 have got/has got으로 표현할 때가 많습니다.
    ✔potato bug: 감자벌레.
He tried to put a mustard-plaster on me last week.”

As a matter of fact it takes a much cleverer man to be a really good animal-doctor than it does to be a good people’s doctor.
    ----------------------------------------------

✔let him out: 그를 밖으로 내보내다.
✔let him in: 그를 안으로 들이다.
“the trouble is that anybody thinks he can doctor animals—
✔that: ...
✔the trouble is that...: 문제는 that절 이하이다.
✔the trouble is that anybody thinks...: 문제는 누구나 ...
just because the animals don’t complain.
    ✔just because...: 단지 ...
    As a matter of fact
it takes a much cleverer man to be a really good animal-doctor than it does to be a good people’s doctor.
✔it takes [a much cleverer man]:
✔to be a really good animal-doctor:
핵심은 it takes [목적어] to [동사원형]입니다.
✔목적어를 대신하는 than: than이 it does의 목적어를 대신합니다. 그래서 it does 다음에 a clever man 같은 목적어를 쓰지 않습니다. I collected more coins than you did. 여기에서도 you did 다음에 coins를 쓰지 않습니다. than이 그 역할을 대신 하기 때문입니다.
