AEW Match Guide Podcast

This week we trade the rings of Tony Khan for the cerulean blue of New Japan Pro Wrestling to pay tribute to the retiring legend Hiroshi Tanahashi as we review one of his greatest hours: Hiroshi Tanahashi v Kota Ibushi from the G1 Climax 2018 Final.

We discuss the build through 2018, how the match came at a crossroads for Tanahashi's career and position in the company and how these two men built up such a hard hitting and emotional performance.

Joining me is 'The Young Boy' Joshua Smith from Keepin' It Strong Style, the preeminent New Japan Podcast and creator of the series Ace of the Universe: a deep dive into the career of Hiroshi Tanahashi.

This week AEW has released its first-ever book, This Book Is All Elite: The Inside Story of AEW, and as a podcast that has dedicated itself to talking about the history of AEW I thought it would only be fitting to read and review the book. I go through it chapter by chapter and look at who is telling the story, what they are trying to say about AEW and what more (or less) could they have done.

I'd love to know your thoughts on it, whether you've read the book or not. You can let me know in the Social Suplex Discord or reach out to my social media noted below.

The AEW Match Guide is back for a special three-part series where we seek to find out who has been the Greatest AEW Male Singles wrestler since the company started in 2019. To do this, I'm joined by the Social Suplex AEW Brains Trust, Imp from Imp's AEW Adventures & Floyd from All Things Elite, and we will work our way through the first round of a massive 64-man bracket I've drawn up to guide us through this discussion.

I'll be posting the bracket on AEW Match Guide Channel in the Social Suplex Discord if you'd like to have a look at it yourself. Please also jump on there to let us know where you think we got it right and where we got it wrong.

This week we deep dive into Brandon Cutler & Peter Avalon's saga to get their first win in AEW culminating in a No DQ, No Count Out Match on AEW Dark #58 on the 27th of October 2020.

We discuss how they built it on BTE, how it dovetailed and interacted with some of the biggest programs going on in AEW at the time and speak about the legacy of BTE in the history of AEW.

On a personal note, this is my fiftieth review on The Match Guide and I'm incredibly thankful to everyone who has ever appeared on or listened to this podcast. I'll be having a break from the normal format for a while but will be back when time permits to make sure you stick around.

An out of cycle podcast where I reflect on my experience attending AEW Grand Slam Australia, my first ever live AEW show. Certainly a roller coaster of a build and a wild day leading up for myself but ultimately a beautiful, life-affirming experience.
